@@ChrisHaye Thanks so much, been waiting for this!! Lots of us "new viewers" will upgrade from g29 using a playseat challenge! Is there a chance for us to see a review on the csl dd on the playseat with the Power Boost? That would be so cool!!
It will be, got a fanmodded used T500 on the really cheap, 230 Euros including postage, a two months ago. (Sold of my modded G27 for 166, so overall it cost me 54 euros.) And that already feels like night and day in comparison to my old G27 when it comes to the FFB. This will be far better. The only problem for me where the pedals, I had modded the G27's Pedals with the full GTEye set and they were great. Out of the box the T3PA-PRO/T500 Pedals weren't as good, especially the brake. Went through a few brake mods T500 realistic brake (not worth it), TM conical brake mod (great ramp up of brake force feel, but almost no lift off feel, making it really hard to feel variations braking) and the 3Drap brake mod (feels not quite as curved as the conical mod, but offers great lift off feel. And good feel over the whole range, as I had to mount the conical a bit further back, due to being unable to hardmount it.) In short either hang on to you G29 pedals if modded (GTEye springs recommended), or get a good set or a good set+Brake mod, as bad pedals make you slow. Until I had modded the brake pedal, I was about 5 seconds a lap slower than with the modded G27. After the 3drap brake mod I'm 3.3 seconds a lap faster around bathurst with the T500 than with the G27. Just a warning, a wheel with interchangeable wheel rims will entice you to buy quite a few things for it. Last month the new TM F1 wheel came out so you could get the old Ferrari F1 wheel rim for cheap (118 eiros inc. postage), as everyone was selling it. And yeah I'd like another round wheel than the standard GT Wheel....well the 28cm rims are dirt cheap 50-80 euros used, but I like the 30cm wheels, so 599XX it is (five weeks old, 128 Euros incl. postage). So Wheel set (icl. Pedals). 230 euro Brake mods. 46 Euro F1 Wheel. 118 euro 59XX wheel. 128 Euro --------------------------. ------------- Sum total (until now) 522 SHH Shifter+Seq plate. 109 End total. 631 So beware!😉😂 And now I need a shifter....and the SHH looks good, better functionality TH8A and cost 70-80 Euros less. Optics aren't as good, but internal build quality is good, according to Barry. Could be something for you, if you're looking for a good shifter that doesn't cost as much as the fanatec one. Otherwise if you already have the Logitech G Shifter, you could look into the 3Drap Cambio mod for it. Although in the end the G shifter+Cambio mod is only marginally cheaper than the SHH.

The boost kit is pretty high. It's just a generic 180w power supply with whatever connector they use on it by the looks of it. Will probably see aftermarket ones or diy ones out in the wild once this comes out . My biggest thing is upgrading from my g27 will require pedals, a shifter and a rim on top of this just to have a comparable experience.
An important thing to consider regarding the strength of the motor: Running a stronger motor (e.g. 25Nm max) turned down to 8Nm will keep it well within it's limits so it will (in theory) last for ages. If the max is already 8, and that's what the player uses, what effect will that have on the lifetime of the motor? I think only time will tell.
@Darren Murphy Instead of saying "motor" it might have been better for me to have said "wheelbase" because I was referring to any part of the device as a whole.
I got the nod for the 2nd wave preorder today and ordered one with the boost kit. Cant wait for September. Quite the upgrade from my ancient fanatec Porsche club sport wheel
I hope Fanatec are pumping these out at max speed so it won't go out of stock in minutes couse I really want to get one. Good job on describing the feel of the wheel, not an easy task to convey that.
Great review Chris. Thanks. Been wanting to upgrade from my T300rs for a while but current DD setups are more than I really wanted to spend and the better non DD options weren’t enough of a step up to make it worth it. This looks perfect.
I'm so happy I bought a Simlab Rig before I upgraded my G29 Wheelbase. I just got my order for the CSL DD in, I orderd the F1 2021 LE this week and this paired with my shifter purchase qualifed me as existing customer. I'm so exited for this. The 130€ extra still stings and I don't think it's a ethical sales practice but in the end I still shelled out the money even though I shouldn't have on principle.
I guess I'll be working extra these summer holidays ^^ this'll probably be my first wheel if I don't have anything expensive breaking in the next couple of months
Thanks for this extremely helpful video preview, Chris. But I just hope that Fanatec decide to do some "wheel & pedal bundles' with this brilliant looking DD Base.... very excited to see how it all pans out?
Excellent preview, cheers Chris! I really feel Fanatec have knocked this one out of the park. New sim drivers could head straight into the Fanatec eco system from the get go now rather than working up from a G29,etc because of that wonderful price. If I hadn't have purchased a DD1 last year, this would be at the top of a very short list.
I just pre-ordered the DD although I got into Sim Racing only about half a year ago with a CSL Elite. I haven't experienced the difference to DD wheels yet... and I love the CSL Elite from how it feels and gives me immersion in VR. But what is bothering me about the CSL Elite is the sound of the cooling fans. DD should feel even better and is passively cooled. So I'll switch. Thank you for your review.
Great video Chris, really well explained & covered. From my point of view the biggest issue with the CSL DD is the lack of Playstation compatibility (at this time at least) I was so excited to hear that I would finally be able to afford to swap from my Logitech G29 to a DD wheel & then you can imagine the disappointment when it was finally announced that it's not PS compatible ........... Oh well, here's hoping that before I hit 60 there is finally an "affordable" DD wheel ..... Yes, I COULD buy a Fanatec DD1 PS wheel setup but as you point out I'm only ever likely to use up to about 10Nm of it's capability & (having looked at the prices) I'd be spending about €2,000 (partly because I WOULD WANT the advanced paddle module, brake kit, button caps, etc which push the final price up a bit) hence the CSL DD coming in at €350 (or €480 for the 8Nm version) would have saved me just over €700 & I would "only" have lost 2Nm of FFB ... Talk about AWESOME !!! So here I sit, broken hearted, almost paid €1,300 (for the 8Nm CSLDD) but now I've far**** - ooopps sorry, that was something else, wasn't it !!! Yes, so here I sit broken hearted, waiting & WANTING to pay €1,300 but nothing there for me to buy !!! So come on Fanatec, get things sorted with the licence & get the PS compatible version out soon, I know it's going to cost an extra €100 - €200 (same as the DD1 & other PS comatible offering do) but get it sorted for us please.
Really exciting stuff. It’s a cool looking unit. The comparison videos between this and the csl elite will be interesting. Personally I think Fanatec have outdone themselves this time.
If you want the most immersive experience (while not spending at commercial levels), would you go for the Podium DD1? Sounds like jumping up to a DD1 means you also need a no-flex cockpit rather than a solid desk.
I'd love to know if this is going to fit on my self built sim rig. Any chance we could have some dimensions? Critical one for me is the distance from the rear of the base right up to where I grip the wheel rim.
@@ChrisHaye You are a gent, Sir. That looks bang on for me - should not cause me any problems at all. Whilst I mainly race on PC, Playstation compat is needed for me also so I guess now we wait for announcements. Many thanks.
I really like listening to your vids. I have no desire to buy a Fanatec DD - BUT I will listen to this review while I kill time building on minecraft :)
Where this wheelbase will totally shine for many are those that are already in the Fanatec eco system and already have compatible wheel rims and even pedal sets and want to move up to the fidelity of a dd wheelbase over a belt system and with this unit can do so even with the 8nm power brick for sub $500. For the average casual sim racer this is a huge difference in what the expense will be as compared to the higher powered previous offerings from ANY manufacturer and again for the majority of users the power levels of this unit will be more than adequate.
Looking forward to upgrading from my Thrustmaster TX. I hate how expensive the rims are from Fanatec, but honestly I only need one wheel for oval, and one for GT/Open Wheel
you made a comment in your Simucube Pro (simo) video that it (Simucube) didn't have the low-torque magnetic cogging that a DD1/DD2 had the CSL DD being an inrunner vs the outrunner in DD1/DD2, is the low torque cogging also present here?
is this compatible to thrustmaster TLCM Pedals and the TM TH8 Shifter? I just want to upgrade my Wheel Base + Wheel and not make a complete makeover to my simrig o:
Im not going to preorder, as first version of anything is often not perfect, but this + boost kit WILL be my next wheel. I currently have t150+t3pa+SHH shifter. I just need to get my t3pa usb converter and get this awesome wheelbase. From t150 i imagine is going to be absolutely massive upgrade. I have my rig mounted to GT omega apex wheelstand.
This is looking spicy. My only concern is being locked into the Fanatec Ecosystem. Thats not a big issue on PC where you can just bypass that issue with adapters. But in consoles it might be a problem.
I'm so happy with this video. I 'accidentally' bought one last night with the standard power supply. I'm hoping someone brings out an aftermarket 8nm PSU because the 'boost kit' is overpriced for a PSU. I wasn't sure I made the right call as I own a nearly new CSW2.5 but I'm all about fidelity and seem to drive a little better under lower forces.
Question: I have cerebral palsy and I’m prone to tiny hand spasms that jerk my wheel. In my CSL, this is no problem. The wheel resists my movements and it helps me to not lose control. Is DD so “direct” that it’s overly sensitive to tiny movements like that? Or is that configurable?
Also have CP, but not the symptom you describe. This base will have similar steering weight as your current base, and more with the boost kit. If you need you can program in a dead zone.
Wait, so it’s just a power supply issue for the “boost kit”? So I can just buy a different power supply, possibly soder the connecting power cord, if it’s proprietary and the limiting factor.
I currently own a fanatec porsche GT3 RS (or something like that) that I got used for 180 bucks (with fanatec pedals and a mounting rig). I dont use it very often, and I clearly did not want to buy a DD base at over 1000 EURO. At this price thou? it actually makes some sense. Now if only I could get it to work in my favorite games... (sim races are fine, but I want to drive somewhere else than tracks). Thx for the "early impressions".
For anyone having issues with the CSL DD (I assume this extends to the CSL DD PRO) * Not being able to calibrate the H-pattern mode of the SQ 1.5 shifter: (1) Try with the short cable provided with the shifter. (2) If unsuccessful, unmount the wheel base, hold it tightly between your legs and try with short cable. ** Wheelbase or steering wheel disconnects in driver page or FFB/buttons/pedals quit working in-game: - on pc - (1) Connect the wheelbase with a wheel mounted and turn it on. (2) Open the driver page. (3) If everything seems connected, tighten the black C-clamp on the wheelbase shaft a bit (or to 15Nm torque) and see if the issue persists (4) If the issue persists or something shows to be disconnected: Loosen the black C -clamp on the wheelbase shaft till you can rotate it slightly without too much effort. (5) Rotate the clamp gently till the driver page shows everything connected (6) Tighten the black C-clamp on the wheelbase shaft a bit (or to 15Nm torque) and see if the issue persists I've had both issues, where the disconnection issues got worse and worse till the both of my wheels showed disconnected permanently. And after a month of trying drivers/firmware/usb-ports etc. these solutions solved my issues. *** On my initial fresh install of my CSL DD with Boost kit, the FFB was very weak. This was resolved quickly for me by uninstalling and re-installing the drivers again.
Hi Chris! Looks like you’ve got one of those IKEA Alex drawer desks with a counter top laid over the top? If I’m right here can I ask how you’ve mounted the desk top to the drawers? Some people just use those little grip pads but I’m wondering if that would be stable enough with a racing wheel mounted to the desktop. Hope you can answer this question :) Thanks!
Can you mount it on a wheelstand instead of a fixed rig as with the old DD's and their increased torque that wouldn't have been possible? I Hear the CSL DD moves things around less so you can but not sure.
You can, but I'd argue you won't be getting the most from it. The problem with wheelstands that I've used is they behave like a damper, so they somewhat take the edge off the ffb feel. The 5Nm PSU won't cause massive issues, but I'd say the 8Nm one would be pretty horrible to use!
@@ChrisHaye Would you say that if someone spends their budget on everything other than a proper rig that a wheelstand is good as a stop-gap? I'd like to go all-in on a DD1 and all the fixings but can't then afford a ~$600+ Aluminum rig, and monitors/TV, etc all at once - thanks!
Hi Chris. Would the 8NM CSL DD provide enough power to use the Fanatec GT3 Rim? It‘s one of the heavier Rims (with over 2kg to my knowledge) which is nearly double the weihght of the Porsche 918 Rim.
It may seem cheap, but remember you have to spend around 400 Euros to get a decent rim with buttons on it. So, it costs more like 800 EUR or more with Boost kit. And that comes close to Simagic M10 which is 1200$ and has a nice GT1 wheel with all buttons and paddles.
I would love one of these as I have never tried a DD due to the expense but I have the feeling that its going to be like everything else & out of stock for the first 2 years or more anyway great work as always Chris
Chris, I love each and every one of your vids. I love your style and how you approach every detail. I came here to clarify my doubts abouth this wheel and I'm on even more doubts about what should I do, but your work is amazing. :D I got a 2nd hand G29 as my first wheel 3 years ago, almost at the same time as a coworker built for himself a whole cockpit with a DD. I just wanted to know if this was a "1 month hobby". The G29 worked really well and 1 year later I replaced it with a TSPC because I wanted more strength "but the DD was too much for me". Now, that finally I built a proper aluminum cockpit and got the V3 pedals, I'm really considering a DD. Just like my friend 3 years before, but buying and selling stuff on the way. I was almost ready to go for a Simucube Pro, but the Fanatec brings this. I'm looking for more fine details and smoothness, so my question is: Does that extra strength - and maybe detail fidelity - cost almost 500€ (CSL DD with the extra power suply vs. Simucube Pro2, i.e.)? Or will I regret my decission -again- a few months later for not buying the high top end gear and getting "just" with this 8nm DD?
Looks like an excellent wheel, whenever I update from my deskclamped G29 to a "proper rig" this is the main suspect.
Yeah I think a lot of people will be feeling the same way!

I hope Fanatec are pumping these out at max speed so it won't go out of stock in minutes couse I really want to get one. Good job on describing the feel of the wheel, not an easy task to convey that.
Pre-ordered mine this morning, not sure why I never got a wave one option but I'm locked in for September now. My CSL Elite +'s days are numbered.
Brilliant analogy, David and Chris👌 , pure class my friend , thorough look through the DD swell 👏👏 bravo
CH: "This is gonna be a long video"
Boosted Media: Hold my pit limiter
Meanwhile, inside the SRG, Barry has just spent 18mins showing the molecular compound density of the USB-C port 🤓

Great video as always Chris! Thanks for sharing with us!!! W
Good one, Chris! The first actual look at the CSL DD that popped up on my feed.
I currently have a CSL Elite PlayStation version and would like to upgrade to version that is PS5 compatible when that comes out.
Yeah, when I buy myself one, it'll be the PS compatible version. Hopefully in time for GT7!
I remember when I was using my old Fanatec CSR on PS4 after project cars included compatibility, that was until Sony made them remove it.
Isnt the CSLe compatible with the PS5?
@@ApolloVIIIYouAreGoForTLI The PS4 version there is a non Playstation compatible version also
I guess I'll be working extra these summer holidays ^^ this'll probably be my first wheel if I don't have anything expensive breaking in the next couple of months
wonderful video.
You sort of indirectly answered all my questions about this base.
Wow was this video well produced. Definetely earned a sub today.
Awesome to see this - thanks for the work Chris.
Glad you enjoyed it Matt :)
very good , clear, methodical review, good job mate
Thanks for this extremely helpful video preview, Chris. But I just hope that Fanatec decide to do some "wheel & pedal bundles' with this brilliant looking DD Base....
very excited to see how it all pans out?
I think I might buy this. I was considering a clubsport base and didn't think I'd ever consider a DD wheel, the price makes it very attractive.
Your production value is crazy good.
Right now I am not really sure if I should buy the CSL DD because I have a CSL Elite F1 Kit. Is it that much better so that it's worth it?
Same question here!
Proper quality review,by a real enthusiasts.
Thank you!
Lovely video Chris. Keep it up!
Awesome coverage. Thank you for this. I have been thinking of getting this asap, because I have been using a faulty t500rs for a while now:)
Thanks for this and overall thanks for all of your content. Keep it up!
Glad my vote was counted with the others and you got the CSL DD hands on.
Great intro to the product as always Mr Haye
Loved the David Haye reference hehehe
People ask me if we're related pretty often :D
Nice work lad so chuffed you got the early crack
Looks like my trusty tx base is going walkies!!
Rear of the unit to the centre-line of the WRC rim is 320mm. Rear of the unit to the end of the wheel side Quick-Release is 240mm. Hope that helps!
@@ChrisHaye You are a gent, Sir. That looks bang on for me - should not cause me any problems at all. Whilst I mainly race on PC, Playstation compat is needed for me also so I guess now we wait for announcements. Many thanks.
Awesome video dude. You do good work 👍
I really like listening to your vids. I have no desire to buy a Fanatec DD - BUT I will listen to this review while I kill time building on minecraft :)
Great video Chris. Can’t wait to try one.
I hate how expensive the rims are from Fanatec, but honestly I only need one wheel for oval, and one for GT/Open Wheel
you made a comment in your Simucube Pro (simo) video that it (Simucube) didn't have the low-torque magnetic cogging that a DD1/DD2 had
the CSL DD being an inrunner vs the outrunner in DD1/DD2, is the low torque cogging also present here?
is this compatible to thrustmaster TLCM Pedals and the TM TH8 Shifter?
I just want to upgrade my Wheel Base + Wheel and not make a complete makeover to my simrig o:
If TLCM Pedals and the TM TH8 Shifter are used with seperat usb yes
you can cannot plug them to the base
Chris you rock sir. Thanks for another awesome video. Have a great day.
If fanatec comes through with that table clamp then I'm defo buying this..can't wait
I enjoy your content man. Keep it up you are doing an amazing job.
Pretto musch Evert game has a deadzone setting. Should solve everything!
Finally tempted to upgrade from my G27 to this. Everything else was too expensive for me.
It’s the same price as the old CSL Elite, though.
@@aaronjacobtrent Still pretty amazing price considering it’s direct drive
Wait, so it’s just a power supply issue for the “boost kit”? So I can just buy a different power supply, possibly soder the connecting power cord, if it’s proprietary and the limiting factor.
did you exerience any flex what so ever having the CSL DD mounted on the plate of a GT1 EVO? Do you see a reason to upgrade to the DD mount?
High quality video, great work
Hey would you recomment deggint Fanatec Podium for CSL DD? I see the screen is a bit high to the steering wheel.
Thanks Chris, have a great day!
It's on the Website and you can order it now. I don't get a Mail about it and saw it avaliable in the shop. Shipping Date is 15. September
Great vid. Between you and Boosted Media, awesome jobs!
For anyone having issues with the CSL DD (I assume this extends to the CSL DD PRO)
* Not being able to calibrate the H-pattern mode of the SQ 1.5 shifter:
(1) Try with the short cable provided with the shifter.
(2) If unsuccessful, unmount the wheel base, hold it tightly between your legs and try with short cable.
** Wheelbase or steering wheel disconnects in driver page or FFB/buttons/pedals quit working in-game:
- on pc -
(1) Connect the wheelbase with a wheel mounted and turn it on.
(2) Open the driver page.
(3) If everything seems connected, tighten the black C-clamp on the wheelbase shaft a bit (or to 15Nm torque) and see if the issue persists
(4) If the issue persists or something shows to be disconnected: Loosen the black C -clamp on the wheelbase shaft till you can rotate it slightly without too much effort.
(5) Rotate the clamp gently till the driver page shows everything connected
(6) Tighten the black C-clamp on the wheelbase shaft a bit (or to 15Nm torque) and see if the issue persists
I've had both issues, where the disconnection issues got worse and worse till the both of my wheels showed disconnected permanently. And after a month of trying drivers/firmware/usb-ports etc. these solutions solved my issues.
*** On my initial fresh install of my CSL DD with Boost kit, the FFB was very weak. This was resolved quickly for me by uninstalling and re-installing the drivers again.
This is the CSL DD video I've seen for people looking to upgrade.
Wonderful, concise video. Thank you. My new go to for all things sim racing
Hi pal I looked at that wheel but didn't see it compatable with the csl dd only the dd1 dd2
@@ChrisHaye Thanks Chris, guess I'll order that 8Nm PSU for the distant future then when I finally upgrade my wheelstand pro :P
If you have a 918 keep it. I have the GT2 and the 918 and you feel the difference even with a DD1.
Is there a time given when Raceroom is going to update their new ffb to the public?
Chris, I love each and every one of your vids. I love your style and how you approach every detail.
I came here to clarify my doubts abouth this wheel and I'm on even more doubts about what should I do, but your work is amazing. :D
I got a 2nd hand G29 as my first wheel 3 years ago, almost at the same time as a coworker built for himself a whole cockpit with a DD.
