Hello, thank you for listening to our music. I hope it gives you some joy and pleasure.
I am pleased that you have discovered our music through this medium. I view this experience as the equivalent of previewing a record in a record store in days of old. However, if you wish to experience the music in its' fullest form, I would strongly encourage you to acquire it in a physical format you can bring into your home. Not only will you then be able to experience the richest version of the music sonically, but you will also be afforded the opportunity to enjoy the tangible artwork, which was conceived in tandem with the music, and serves as a further portal to experiencing the total conceptual and spiritual and emotional content of the work we have labored, lovingly, to bring to you.
I love you,

Who is Joseph
@@cahesolo9267 everyone
My dog is scared of this, and most swans songs from The Seer on... I let the dog outside and fall into a trance, life is good. Treats for dogo after, of course.
From an Angels of Light interview:
There’s this person I call “Joseph” who has been the sort of the puppeteer of me, for my entire life. And he’s an entity that speaks through me on occasion, so it’s more like giving up to Joseph. Many of the songs are written through him. - Michael Gira
What
That's actually pretty fascinating.
When Gira has those moments of self actualization, Joseph comes through him. It's as if Joseph has been growing inside him his whole life, getting larger and more sinister.
demonic possession?
Sometimes when artists explain their lyrics, it ruins it. This one makes it way better.
The song to end all songs...
this song feels like something gira pulled out of the dirt it has a very primordial quality like the musical equivalent of a cave painting.
I mean this in a good way btdubs
You're right. Something about this record feels timeless to me, more so than pretty much any other Swans album. Something about the music is just so universally profound that I think no matter what the current trends are musically, this will always exist to utterly baffle you. Pretty much perfect record besides a couple of small moments for me with multiple genuinely perfect (or the closest to that it you can get) tracks if you ask me.
Yeah it's raw and visceral. Like a wounded animal fighting back.
Joesph is me and you are a liar
I think it's because it subverts expectations in a way that is considered unconventional and chaotic. It's really something to behold.
This song has an insane grove in the second half.
Also the loud guitar distortion(?) Right after every "i am the glowing man..." Make my mouth watering
Truth. That part when it kicks into really high gear in the last quarter. Almost too much
CAN - Mother Sky
Yeh I flipped out live. But Gira hates moshing. SO dance in place.
@@thepopgroup3366 It's the perfect levels of distortion. Gira's a master
This is nothing less than a masterpiece.
I don't think there's anything as raw and brutal that gets close to this.

Francisco Almeida your interpretation does pair with the lyrics "no no no no no no no yes no no noooooo"
This part sounds a lot like the beginning of Bring The Sun
Some Art Nerd the glowing man is actually a result of the continued evolution of Bring the Sun while they toured in between albums.
I like to think of it as falling into a black hole and get stretched as every single atom in your body gets ripped apart, becoming the glowing man
Love how they extended the first part of Bring the Sun.

Brilliant.
@@WillieG1016 I agree with you wholeheartedly, I love To Be Kind, it ascended to incredible heights. The Glowing Man used those heights as a springboard to completely rearrange fucking everything. It's taken me years to realise just how fucking incredible this album is, I obviously think it's better than To Be Kind.
Over the years, I started believing this is their best album since Soundtracks For The Blind.

"To Be Kind" is very in your face about its tone and attitude, and you either love it or hate it but you know very quickly which one it is. "The Glowing Man" as an album is a stranger thing, much more introspective at the lowest points and yet managing to expand endlessly at the highest points. Some of the most brutal passages of Swans' entire 30+ year run distilled. Just this track alone is completely life-affirming, reality-shaking, mind-bending totally.
Well uttered mister,well uttered!
So this band is for psuedointellectuals?
I only feel ambivalent towards TBK because half of it is hypnotic and addictive, and the other half I just find obnoxious and self-indulgent. TGM, on the other hand, is a solid 8/10 for me. Pure power.
@@qriofficial1769 Which tracks do you find obnoxious and self indulgent? I can understand thinking that about oxygen and the title track and maybe bring the sun, but none of the rest
Greatest band in the world... I like them so much that even in this age where people expect music to be free I still buy their albums, because I want them, as prized possessions, and to support the band, with my hard earned cash.
Me too. I've bought everything they've released on vinyl since 'reforming' in 2010. I slept on the CD-only releases, wish I hadn't - the live albums are sometimes even better than their studio counterparts. I have multiple copies of everything on wax.
YES
I think I can hear screams of terror in the last few minutes. it’s like the glowing man is ascending to heaven while stepping on the bodies of those who didn’t make it
He doesn’t make it. The album is partly about what people do to fill the void when they’re confronted with the silence and indifference of God. Hint: it isn’t good
@@orbitalbutt6757 interesting take but im not sure about the silence and indifference part. gira has said multiples times he doesnt bash on faith/god - and if anything i dont think this song is about god, perhaps transcendence.
I've been listening to this song since ages, I check the timebar and still got 7 minutes to go.

This is the Swans masterpiece, most acclaimed song of this era made by them, and I totally see why 👏👏👏👏👏
Swans are as close as music gets to perfection. You can't guess where things are going to go from one moment to the next.
What the drummer is doing at around the 7:30 mark is hard as fuck to do for 4 straight minutes plus the fill at the end. Lord
He does it live tho.

Post-hiatus Swans fighting Pre-hiatus Swans for the best band of all time
Listening to this is the equivalent of going to church, loving thy neighbor and understanding the truth of the universe all in one. Swans will always resonate to my soul and make me feel whole. It is the most healing and cathartic music to listen to. Easily the top ten tops of music to listen to feel whole and healed.
You know those comments on music videos that say “I showed this to _ and it turned into _?” I feel like this is the only song capable of actually doing such a thing.
My dog listened to this song once and now she is a ball of molten lead.

I showed Joseph this and he made my body fly
I used to ride my bike to work in st. paul, and when it got too cold, I'd put on a down jacket and run the 3 miles, post holing through unshoveled sidewalk snow the whole way, and this song was exactly the right length and motivational force. It made me feel like I was going somewhere cool, instead of work.

What a beautiful idea.
La mejor canción de la mejor banda del mejor album de la historia. Nisiquiera los géneros musicales mas prestigiosos como el progresivo musica clásica o jazz me hacen dudar de tal afirmación. Mi canción favorita probablemente por la eternidad.

Between war, symphonic music and the power of mother nature ...
Damn I discovered Swans a few MONTHS ago and it's easily in my top 5 bands now. I really hate the fact that amazing music like this doesn't get very popular just because it's different and unique. I recommend this stuff to people and they don't like it cause it's too "weird". I recently became a mild insomniac and this band really helps me out with anxiety and helps me fall asleep. I hope these guys get recognized and appreciated more, cause they certainly deserve it.

Hairy Ballbastic ah I thought you were disagreeing. It is indeed, so good.
if swans were mainstream it'd lose its appeal
also it not being mainstream doesn't make it unpopular. swans is a household name in the music community.
The bridge section from 12:00 to roughly 15:00 is just flawless and whimsical.
To Be Kind is like going from bunker to bunker and watching a nuclear explosion
The Glowing Man is like walking through a detonating minefield
Then The Seer is the warning of that nuclear explosion
The way the description is worded in an oddly personal way. I like it.
Why did it take me so long to see something like that?
This song is extraordinary but the repetitive riff from 7:30 takes it another level, if that was possible.
this song is like a thunderstorm, at 0:00 until 3:47 its like the storm coming, 3:47 to 7:30 its like the first bit of the storm, then at 7:30 it goes into full mode, with thunder, lightning, rain, hail (if you live in Kansas then a tornado). At 11:58 the main storm stops and it stays at light rain, and at 15:00 to 28:51 its just rain. Yes, i made this up on the spot.

the song was conceived during extended jam periods of bring the sun

It really is.
if you read the book Power and Sacrifice: an oral history of swans, you'll read that The Seer turned into bring the sun/toissant l'oveture, and then into glowing man. they are all basically an evolution of one idea

listening to this while working out
I started my Swans journey with this song after failing to get into the discography 9 months earlier. Even though every album I've listened to is beautiful in their own way, The Glowing Man (the album and the song) is still my absolute favorite.
Every time I hear that intro, I'm being brought back to when I first listened to this before school. I remember when I finished it, I immediately rewound it and listened again. After the second listen, I went to bandcamp and played the whole album 2 times in a row.
This album was like an actual drug. I couldn't focus in school, and this music was the only thing I would talk about all week (my friends probably got really tired of me, ngl). After all of this, I did tons of research into the band, made a mental list of every album I wanted to listen to, and then jumped straight into the Swans rabbit hole.
Anyways, I would say the song is pretty decent lmao.
This song is in the same key as "Bring The Sun/Toussaint L'Ouverture". If you want to experience this track differently, I can recommend playing the 1st part of "Bring The Sun" (without Toussaint L'Ouverture) before the 2nd part of this track, starting at 15:00 minutes. The transition is nearly smooth and it energizes an already energetic tune further.
One can also chew on some mushrooms.
@@BlueArcStreaming Indeed.
the seer's title track is also in the key of d minor (the key of 'bring the sun' and 'the glowing man'), all of them centerpieces of their respective records. it really seals up the trilogy
This song was actually birthed from them touring Bring The Sun and it eventually evolved into some skeleton version of this, that they kept developing further and further!
@@TwigCity interesting! makes sense then

Thank you. Great stuff..... I’ve just bought The Seer, To Be Kind & The Glowing Man......Epic works in every way.
One of the best periods in the history of music!
I like the way he says I am a glowing man i am
I wonder why most music cannot even touch this . . . . Largely, I think, it's because this goes completely beyond music
Because this latest incarnation of Swans is less about the logic and reason behind music, and more about the sheer feeling of it. The physicality of it. It's not about 'getting' the band, you can't 'get' Swans, just experience it. Swans live (saw them during the Deliquescence release period, after The Glowing Man) is an otherworldly experience, 3 hours of volume and power hitting you constantly, exhausted from standing, nearly hallucinating from the sensory overload. Yes, god damn yes, this goes beyond music. This is a portal to your inner self. Ecstasy!
Ok ill like your comment just for 7 up but still, it does not go completely beyond music, what am i supposed to do pause it? Put it on mute? Get outta heere
the live shows are pretty crazy but actually shut up about this. this is real music, it does not "transcend" and you don't need to be a genius to like it. it's just a good instrumental and good singing, like every other song
