One time a teacher left me the smallest piece of candy and I thought it was such a sweet gesture and will remember to do the same.

As a sub just a couple of months ago... I cannot agree more with a lot of what you said. I'm considered "good" and get called in a lot, but when I walk into a classroom, I DO NOT have time to read pages of super detailed notes. Because I will definitely miss information. Teachers need to remember, subs come in last minute a lot. I just need a good summary (which, sometimes, is an art). Getting a sub to start a whole new lesson also isn't the best idea, especially if there many steps. If I'm stuck reading paragraphs of notes to start the next task, I will end up wasting valuable time, that could go into things like learning about the students/ classroom management. I love when teacher's throw in breather's like: "Students read indendently for 15 minutes. There is no talking." It gives me a chance to catch up, gather, and ground myself. Especially when there are students with complex needs that have been really pushing it, because there is a new person in "their" room.

Oh I love your point about including "breathers"! I forgot how much that helps when you're a sub. I'll be sure remember you when I include those in my sub plans! Thanks for the tip. 💗

Yes! I love this!! Mariel, your videos are wonderful -- so practical and so accessible. I was previously a full-time middle school teacher, and I've now transitioned into subbing -- both for day-to-day sub needs and as a long-term sub. Your emergency sub plan tips are so great! For middle/high school teachers preparing sub plans, I would say that one of my biggest go-to items is the Day at a Glance schedule at the top of the sub plans (7:45-8:36 1st period 10th grade English, 8:40-9:29 2nd period Planning, 9:29-9:54 Break Duty in the Lunch Room, etc.).

Great advice! I'm redoing my sub binder and tub this year. So true about technology issues for subs because most don't have any access at all. We have 1 to 1 devices at our school so I include all the qr log in codes in my sub binder because it's inevitable that a kiddo magically "forgets" how to log in or can't find their own log in card the day I'm out sick.

Dark Chocolate covered-pretzels and I keep sub plans on my Google docs so I can just cut and paste things onto it. Then I paper clip all of the worksheets with post its on them stating reading, writing, and math. It’s easy to change them because the routines for everything are the same but the specials and the schedule may have changed, so tweaks are minimal. Thanks for your channel!!! ❤

As an experienced teacher who has been subbing for the last few years, I get bored if I feel like I'm babysitting. I love getting to actually teach at least 1 or 2 lessons. The key is to please plan the substantive stuff for parts of the day when I'll have had the chance to review the lesson plans, like after a planning period or a duty-free recess. It's tricky to capture the nuances of multiple lessons that occur first thing in the morning.

I find that as a teacher I had really good low prep sub plans. As a sub however I hated the plans that were left. I found most of the information left for me was useless notes with no work!! Please just leave the copies. I really don’t need to know who’s who or lunch times in secondary. But I do need something for them to do. And please do not involve tech and don’t make it complicated. Bonus if I can teach something simple without interpreting tech

Totally makes sense! Yeah, there’s no reason to overcomplicate it, especially when it’s multiple periods or classes. Thanks for sharing your insight and taking the time to watch and comment! 🌻💕
