Kiss Unplugged is an MTV Unplugged album by American rock band Kiss. On August 9, 1995, the band performed on MTV Unplugged. Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons contacted former members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley and invited them to participate. Fan reaction to Criss and Frehley at the show was so positive that, in 1996, the original lineup of Kiss reunited, with all four original members together for the first time since 1979. It is the first live album by the band that is not part of the Alive series.
"The sound was deafening: the sound of rock 'n' roll history coming full circle in a TV studio", wrote Kerrang!'s Don Kaye in a review of the taping at New York's Sony Music Studios. "Complete pandemonium ensued as they struck the opening chords to '2,000 Man', and it continued when Ace's voice rang out in the clear, sardonic manner we all know and love.
It marked the only time the original lineup performed publicly without their trademark makeup, and was also the only time Frehley and Criss shared a stage with Eric Singer and Bruce Kulick. It was the first time Singer had part of a lead vocal on an album (shared with Criss on "Nothin' to Lose"). On March 12, 1996, the concert was released on CD and, on December 18, 2007, on the Kissology Volume Three: 1992-2000 DVD set. This included the original DVD release of the concert plus five previously unreleased songs: "Hard Luck Woman" (with Stanley on vocals), "Heaven's on Fire", "Spit", "C'mon and Love Me", and a country version of "God of Thunder". The LP version of the album includes a poster and some were pressed on yellow marbled vinyl.
A stand-alone VHS and DVD documentary was produced around the same time as the CD release, with archival footage of the band's rehearsal sessions at SIR Studios in New York. It also shows the first "KISS Konvention" appearance with Criss joining the touring members on stage to sing a few tunes earlier in the year. According to Criss, this invite gave Simmons the idea of reaching out to both him and Frehley to be a part of the Unplugged taping in an unannounced reunion. Because of the contentious split, the worldwide fan base never thought this would happen, and it was kept a closely held secret until the day of the event

If this song was recorded in mid-90s with "wonderwall-ish" mix in studio, it would be a worldwide radio-hit. This song was 20 years ahead of its time, and one of the most underated songs in history

The Melvins did a cover of it in '94, and Dinosaur Jr. did one a year or two later. This song was a precursor to grunge, as both Buzz Osborne and J. Mascis had both admitted.

It’s a shame Gene puts on the front of only being in music for money and women, because his catalogue displays a depth of soul that he never delves into in the way he presents himself. His bass playing also shows a real dedication toward being a good musician and the fun he has playing in a band is unmistakable.

I saw them in concert a handful of times. Gene was joking around during a break while they were messing with Mark St. John's gear after it got borked in the middle of a song. While "noodling", Gene started bouncing between slap-funk and jazz on his bass. Seriously great skill was displayed, just to keep warm and loose.

Its not that hard, but yeah, he's actually reasonably proficient/stable, altho if you listen to just the bass and drums (the drums here are as on as a metronome), he's not as on as the drums. They were pretty untight for many years, but that was a combo of criss being pretty bad, stanley and simmons being not amazing (but musical) and frehley being a bit sloppy.

One of KISS' greatest moments. This show and record proved that the guys could actually play their instruments, and that at least a few of their songs sound great even stripped of distortion, effects and makeup. It helps that Singer and Kulick are damned good musicians, but the core of these songs is strong enough to withstand personnel changes. Despite the creepy-ass subject matter, this performance is amazing.

☑️ I was not only impressed by Bruce and Eric's performance, but Gene's bass playing was very good, much better than I would've kinda expected. Honestly though, I haven't exactly heard a lot of kickass bass solos from Gene in the past, so I expected him to be more of a basic, no-frills rhythm style bassist.
I was probably most impressed with the slick, tasteful drumming. I'm a drummer, so.........

    • @rhizomorph-music
      @rhizomorph-music Год назад +4

I've always believed that when the lyrics say "I'm 93, you're 16" the character in the song means it in a sort of sardonically exaggerated way. In other words, it's about a guy who realizes that he is just too old for a young lady who is interested in him, and is maybe 25 and she's 16 but he feels like the age difference is so large that he might as well be 93.

It's funny how that one lyric being changed can change the whole tone and meaning of a song. With a simple swap it goes from being a bit of a weird song about a 93yo who may have feelings for a 16yo, to a tale of a lonely dying sea captain speaking of and to a creature he met many years ago. Almost makes you wonder why they didn't stick with that original draft for the initial recording.

Been listening to The Melvins cover of this for like 15 years. Have never cared much for Kiss so I somehow had absolutely no idea this was their song until today 😲
Kudos to these dudes, cause I’ve enjoyed this song for so long while not giving enough respect to Kiss 😆😅

And I know how it should be
There is nothing more for you and I
Some are young and some are free
But I think I'm goin' blind
'Cause, I think I'm goin' blind
And I know how it's to be, yeah
    Little lady, can't you see
You're so young and so much different than I
    I'm 93, you're sixteen
Can't you see I'm goin' blind
'Cause, I think I'm goin' blind
And I know how it's to be, yeah
'Cause, I think I'm goin' blind
And I know how it's to be, yeah
You're much younger, can't you see
There is nothing more for you and I
    I'm 93, you're sixteen
And I think I'm goin' blind
Yes, I think I'm goin' blind

KISS fan or not, this is good stuff. Their unplugged CD is phenomenal, and I never hear the stuff on the radio. Then again, radio in NE Ohio is dull and void of any substance, which describes everything here.
