01. KISS - "I Stole Your Love" (Alright, Largo! Alive in Maryland 1977 franKENstein Redux)

- This is the first in a series of classic multi-cam KISS concerts from the '70s that I have been upscaling and re-creating the audio for. My goal is to give these shows near-album-quality audio while maintaining all the nuances of the actual performances. Rather than simply syncing the official live albums to these shows, I have re-created the basic tracks using various isolated tracks from those albums along with other sources, blending them with actual guitar solos, vocals, drum arrangements and other variations that match the original performance.
This show is from Largo, MD and was taped at Capital Center 12/20/1977 on the ALIVE II Tour.
Vocals: Some vocals bits come from the original Largo recording, but since those vocals are very boxy and distorted (even after "clean-up") they are the vast minority used here. Instead, I used Alive II for the majority of the vocals. They have been altered/edited to perfectly match the Largo video so the feel of the original show is more or less maintained. A few songs use other vocal sources like Houston '76, Detroit '76 & Detroit '77 and NYC '77.
Drums: The drum tracks were done using remixed versions of isolated tracks from Alive!, ALIVEII and Lost Alive II. The original Alive II tracks are blended with samples I created of Peter's actual Alive II and Love Gun drums. Many of the cymbals are also augmented with Peter's actual crash cymbals sampled from ALIVE II. By creating these custom samples I was also able to create versions of the non-A2 songs with the "ALIVE II sound". "Firehouse", "Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll", "Rock and Roll All Nite" and "Black Diamond" were done using Peter's actual drumming; sometimes from Alive! with alterations made to match the '77 tour versions and sometimes with pieces of other songs on Alive II, edited and rearranged to piece together the song. "Black Diamond", "Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll" & and "Firehouse" were done this way. "RARAN" comes mostly from the Lost ALIVE II recording with the arrangement altered to match the Largo version. Peter's drum solo comes from the actual show, with samples blended to better match the sound of the rest of the show.
Bass: A bit of distortion was added to Gene's bass tracks to better simulate his live bass tone. Most of his parts come from either Alive! or ALIVE II with a few exceptions where other (mainly studio) sources were used. His solo before "God of Thunder" is taken directly from the Largo show.
Guitars: Most of the guitars come from Alive II or Lost Alive II. Some of Ace's solos were taken right from the Largo '77 show where he plays different things than on those recordings. His "Shock Me" solo spot comes directly from the Largo show. Some of Paul's guitar tracks come from Alive! and other sources. "Firehouse", "Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll" and "Black Diamond" are taken from Alive! (mostly), but with some distortion added.
The video has been upscaled to 1080p using AI software and is a combination of the original video and extra footage from the alternate-angle version so there are lots of new edits and footage not seen in the original. I have adjusted the entire show, shot by shot to my liking. Everyone has a different opinion on what looks best. I have made the best effort not to completely lose all detail in the darker areas and have tried to maintain a good balance between a darker overall look and the original lighting. This show has quite a bit of video noise and horizontal banding in places that can’t be removed without over-darkening.
I have made the pacing between songs closer to what you'd see and hear on an official release, but only dead space removed. I also slowed down "Firehouse" by about 5% because the original performance is ridiculously fast. It isn't really noticeable in context and still gives the song a similar "pep" compared to early, much slower performances.
Again, my goal was to create a version of this great concert that can be better enjoyed with great audio accompanying it. For those who don't know, these old concerts were recorded with direct-from-soundboard audio. The PA mix would be compensating more for something like a voice than for a relatively loud guitar amp or drum set. Thus, we often get a very uneven sound when ONLY the soundboard mix is heard. This also means there is zero room ambience and the only crowd noise heard was the bleed coming through the stage mics creating a very dead-sounding atmosphere. While a video like this is NOT for the purist, a strong argument can be made that what is captured on those videotapes is far from what someone in the audience would have actually heard.
This version is not an attempt to erase or replace the original, but rather to (hopefully) bring new life to it. You have definitely never seen or heard this show quite like this before. It was many months in the making, so I truly hope other fans enjoy it.

Now that's the Kiss I remember...
The picture quality is outstanding!! Makes all the difference!!
Agreed.
Así deberían remasterizar todos los videos en vivo
These guys weren’t the best musicians in the world but damn, they knew how to put on a show and the music was solid, old school rock and roll. I loved the old Kiss. Grew up with it. They ruled the planet for a good 3 years. I damn sure miss it!!
And they had some heavy tunes as well. She, parasite, 100 000 year. I could go on. They were solid players, but Paul Stanley was a great singer and frontman.
Amen
I just had trip back to January 1978 when I was 18 & they were my first concert & man I've never looked back. They were the shit back then!
I cannot possibly agree with you more! Original KISS !!
Ruled alot longer than just 3 yrs dude
Paul said that Peter struggled so much in the studio but he sounds awesome here.
Paul and Gene regularly speak directly out of their arses
Paul struggles with being a human, so it evens out.
What a gift to the Kiss Army!
At their best period. This is when I was a little kid, outside Washington, DC, and loved KISS. I had stacks of their bubble gum cards, I got the colorforms and lunchbox - I even had a few action figures!
Same here, my best Christmas present is Alive 2, and a 5 ft long live Gene Simmons poster, I got to meet Gene in 92 accidentally, and told him ,meeting you and shaking your hand just made a childhood dream come true, he said no problem, after I accidentally pushed aside Shannon Tweed, gosh what a moron I was, she was very sweet and understanding,
The Destroyer outfits were always my favorite but I think KISS looks the most "Clean, Polished and Professional" in these Love Gun Outfits. This is KISS at their absolute best and at the top of the mountain.....and this is how they will be remembered!
WOW - this is the clearest video and audio of that Largo show that I have ever seen and heard ‼️
Right here they were INDEED THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE LAND ,YOU WANTED THE BEST,YOU GOT THE BEST
When KISS ruled the world.
I was 16.
Paul's voice was the best back then. All good things must come to an end. 😢
Awww.. The good Ole days when the Original KISS with Ace and Peter.. was... Awesome.!!! Hell Yeah... Mr Dilly.. Rockingly.. Approved.!!! 👍🎸😎❤️🤟
In 77 I was 7 and kiss was everything I thought they were Gods! Great to see these videos
Picture perfect, what an outstanding job you did with this!
Thanks on behalf of the Kiss Army worldwide.❤
Nothing can beat Kiss on top of their game in the seventies(imho).
@@michaelleen2940 thanks!
Such a great copy of a exciting time in history!!
Hey Ken When I bought these bootleg tapes on VHS back in 1996, I never thought they could look this good man
Wow, me too!!! Definitely sharing this video and all this revolutionary work!
Was THERE at The CAP Center (was in 9th grade- FIRST Concert Ever)! AC/DC with Bon Opened! This Show ROCKED So Hard!!!!
77 I was 11..they were Indeed Gods to me. What a show ! Some great songs throughout.
My first KISS concert! I was 9 and they set the roof of the arena on fire with pyrotechnics they were
band from playing there for 20 years they didn’t play that arena again till the 2000s farewell tour
And that show started a hour late because of the fire marshal inspection!
They actually played 2 nights there in 1979.

Glad you enjoyed it!
I was there 😁😁
Man! I never saw this one !!! This is their best time ... Ty for posting this 😮wow
Image quality is rather good.

I heard back in 88 or so that kiss video taped almost all their makeup years, and hoping they would release them,
KISS at the peak of their game. It was all downhill from here.

This remastered Largo footage and the Winterland concert has made me fall in love all over again with my favorite band. Thank you so much for doing this !!! If there is any way I could get these concerts on blu ray or dvd from you that would be a dream come true !
Thanks! I stopped making it easy for bootleggers to sell copies on eBay by authoring disc versions, but you can download the uncompressed files here if you khow to burn them yourself…

@@franKENstein620Is this from the HBO concert that was shown?
@@jeffhodge7272 the HBO show was from Tokyo 1977 on the RARO tour. That was also recorded for an abandoned single-LP that was never released. They decided they needed more new material so held off and recorded the the LA forum shows from the Love Gun Tour. Some of the Tokyo songs were used for Alive II along with some of the forum songs (or soundchecks, etc).
I am working on a version of that Tokyo show (only 1 hour was shown on HBO and there was an afternoon and evening show recorded). I am working on a version that combines both shows with the audio re-done similar to this show.
You can look for “the lost alive II” if you want to hear what was supposed to be that Japan-only 2nd live album.
@@franKENstein620 Cool.I'll be looking for it all!
@@franKENstein620 I would have loved if Take Me and Mr.Speed where on ALIVE II.
There's a couple I could have done without too.😏
So basically you're just doing EXACTLYYYYY what KISS has been doing for years right???Making them sound way better than wtf they actually doooo!!!It's cool seeing the old footage cuz they ruled the world in the 70's when i was a kid so I'm thankful to see the live footage but it's a shame that Rock & Metal have turned to faking it live!!I've been to so many concerts it's crazy & I'm blessed to say I never saw any band faking it especially seeing SLAYER live 9 times and the almighty original Black Sabbath & Judas Priest!!Never did get to see KISS & hate I missed seeing them in their Prime but thanks for posting!!
Haha. Well, that’s an overstatement, but yes. There are dozens of live recordings of KISS from the 70s and they actually sound far better than what we hear on those bootleg videos that were recorded directly through the soundboard. Yes, Ace flubs a chord or a couple notes here or there and there is sometimes a little bit of slot from them jamming around so much but all in all kids were very tight and great live rock ‘n’ roll band.
The only reason I replaced vocals on this particular show is because the sound quality of the original is so distorted, I wanted this to be closer to an official release like Alive II only on video. They actually sing very well live but with no compression or room ambience on the vocals, tin can sounding drum mix, thin guitars, and everything else that comes from a direct from the soundboard Recording it is hard to sound powerful under those circumstances. If you watch my Winterland concert virtually all the vocals are directly from the show. I am also working on Houston 77 and all of those vocals will be live as well. If you listen to the audio recording from the LA forum 1977 it sounds basically exactly like alive too With only a few vocal parts slightly different. The Alive! Outtakes and bootlegs from that time also match the album almost perfectly.
The main reason KISS and most bands re-recorded so much stuff for live albums was just for consistency and for better quality, not because they couldn’t play.
But I’m glad you like it . 👍🏻
@@franKENstein620 cool you're doing a great job with it thanks for all the hard work for us fans!!🤘🤘

This is Awesome!! Great job!!
This is amazing, im just wondering what happened to the rest of the concert?
You know how you released an entire video of the concert?
it's all in the playlist. YT blocks it as one file for some dumb reason.

@@franKENstein620Yeah ok that’s super cool. By the way if you don’t like youtube I suggest using something like vimeo. Also you may have thought lf this already but a way to get concerts with way better audio is to takr concert footage, edit it very little of not at all and just putting the alive I,II or III audio, or off the soundboard audio.
I hope you one day can edit their 1979 performance or something from the lick it up or asylum tour!
@@elvis5138 the full show is up on Vimeo. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lnt9Io2FXynoPwAuFr0lvcKzdDOFmf8n
It’s just that WAY more people can potentially see it on YT. My purpose here was not to just sync to the live albums, but rather to “recreate” what the show would have been like with good audio. If you read the description I explain how I did everything to basically make it “sound like” A2 (only better, hopefully) while keeping all the nuance of the actual performance.
Thanks for watching!
@@franKENstein620 Yeah I hear u bro this is amazing doing ur thing! Im just saying if you want to release something cool but might take less work, that it would've maybe sounded like with good audio.
Can you link your vimeo do you upload stuff there?

OUTSTANDING QUALITY!!! THANK YOU!!!
I would love to see some old Van Halen (DLR Era) shows upscaled. I'd be willing to supply the video and pay for your time.
Every Kiss concert needs this treatment
it's even a bit better imo than the improved remastered early 2000s KISSTORY vol.1 & 2 releases though not sure by how much. Image quality here is outstanding!
Thanks for keeping the fire lit. This is amazing!!
LOVE you work! This is truly a worthy endeavor...
KISS
Gene's clean.
This was IT for these guys. After this tour it wasn't the same
Dude! You are a magician!!
The kiss i fell in love with when i was a kid still a kiss fan
Incredible work.
When KISS was a band not a brand
TRULY SPOKEN 😊!!! BERNIE GERMANY 🎉
All the talk about KISS not being real musicians & just being a 3 chord pop band .. So fruisterating when people say that. Its like they listened to RARAN & drew their conclusion from that. . Watch Paul & Genes Laft hands, changing chords different positions movging around the neck, and most of the time not even looking at the guitar. And Paul even singing while playing almost flawlessly.
Those machine gun rolls by Peter...
Awesome!!!!
Great work Ken and thanx a lot for sharing! =^_^=
I Miss the "MAGIC" NEVER SHOULD HAVE UNMASKED, FOOLS ,
Fantastic!
Whoever transferred, color corrected, color depth and mixed the audio did a superb job. The original film must have been in pristine condition. The audio almost sounds too good to be real. If the audio was from a two track master, the original recording engineer must have had a second mixing desk for live mixing to stereo, because it’s so well balanced. If not, then bravo.
Please read the description. The audio was painstakingly recreated using several different sources including the original show. The original is just a very poorly mixed mono soundboard feed and even using instrument isolation the drums sound like tin cans and the vocals are pretty distorted (and the bass is nearly inaudible). This was my attempt to create an “official quality” soundtrack for this show/tour. As for the video, I spent several weeks upscaling and color correcting it shot by shot but the source is the same as most of the newer versions you’ll find on YT. I also re-edited it using an alternate-angle source which has some different shots of some of the show.
these are awesome thanks for sharing!
Damn-that sounds great!!!
It would be great with The KISS Alive Cobo Hall 1976.
Amazing.
Any change of doing the January 76 show at Cobo Hall 😁
Those are owned by a private 3rd party, so they can't be posted here. Others have done a straight Alive! sync. It would be fantastic with a "from scratch" re-do like this one, but I won't do it without permission. I do respect the ownership, but KISS don't seem to mind fans sharing other shows. There is plenty of other great stuff to use. Winterland '75 coming this weekend and Largo '79 and Sydney '80 are in the works. \m/
@@franKENstein620 brilliant!

Prime Kiss... Unmatched...
One of the favourite songs
I would like to pay my greatest kudos to you for your feat. I have been a Kiss fan for nearly 50 years, but was not happy with the poor sound of the snare drum on the 77-78 love gun tour, as it was so thin and flimsy compared to the thick and massive snare sound of 76-77 RRO tour. In this restored video&audio, of course, the images are really beautiful and precise, and the sound of the drums, vocals, guitars, and bass are wonderful and more than enough for an immersive viewing experience !!
Awesome! Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it. 👍🏻
love this audio
Your sound layering and blending as well as where you know where to cut off vocals if they move away from the mic-excellent work
This is absolutely killer. You did an outstanding job. I completely love this. KISS rules forever. This is like if an official live DVD from back then was made! I love it. This is pure magic. The best quality ever audio and video.
