    Fun fact: if they did this trip in the summer (as they would have, seeing as there is no snow and temperatures would be most manageable), Sarek's northern latitude would lead to barely any nighttime, if any.

    • @lorimyers4783
      @lorimyers4783 4 года назад +67

      they make mention of this. I think Hutch talks about it and how in other places they don’t see daylight for 6 months. Also the monster can control its surroundings. Notice how they were all lost and there was no end in sight but when Luke stands up for himself and kills the monster, he finds a clearing and he’s out? The monster didn’t want him anymore. He overcame his trauma and pain and was not submitting. This God commands people submit to him. The brief attack with the axe makes the monster realize this and he lets Luke go, but doesn’t get a chance to kill him as he finds a clearing and runs out of the forest, where he is bound. He can not manipulate the clearing. I think the markings on the tree are proof of the monster’s authority and control over the forest but, in contrast, also indicate his bounds and limitations.

    • @lorimyers4783
      @lorimyers4783 4 года назад +14

      @Umbrella Driver and to add, the god didn’t want him anymore as he showed defiance by attacking it instead of bowing to it. He overcame his trauma - always reflecting on a day where he had a choice as to whether he should act or not act - and the god doesnt want followers who are strong willed. It’s almost so insecure that it knows the only people who will worship it were those who were promised a life of no more pain and suffering and/or those who
      fear being killed by it.

      Elder futhark is a set of runes used by the old Norse people of Scandinavia. Not to be confused with the younger futhark, which it eventually turned into as time went on. Since the "vikings" didn't have a written language, at the time, they had these runes to symbolize things. A common misconception is that they used these runes as letters like we do our alphabet, they didn't. Again, they didnt actually have a written language at that point.

    The woods is typically a literary metaphor for the subconscious. The monster is a metaphor for PTSD. The visions of the store are flashbacks just like PTSD symptoms. Luke using the axe is a metaphor for him using the memories of his friends to beat PTSD, since him reaching for the hatchet involved him reaching for his friend's dead body. The group all displayed typical reactions to PTSD, the tough guy who doesnt acknowledged it but is secretly tormented (Hutch), the person who is severely affected and just wants someone to talk to but is shut out by loved ones (Phil), and the person who denies it and tries to just carry the weight of it but eventually breaks from the burden (Dom). And they were killed by the monster. So the ending actually means he has left the woods or left the subconscious, and left behind his trauma, and beaten PTSD. He literally puts down or "buries the hatchet" at the end.

    Here's my take on this. The main reason the elk god doesn't leave the forest is bc hes actually using the forest as a type of camouflage. He's actually hiding from from the other gods. The sacrifices aren't just to fill his ego but also a ritual to stay off the gods radar. Another thing I dont think he truly wants the easiest people that would submit to him he tagerts the one with the
    Greatest guilt to give them the chance of being reborn. He pushes luke down not only to make him worship but to also accept his trying to tell him to not fight the pain and to accept it. To stay down. The reason he decided to go with Gayle was because he wanted to see a) if he felt pain in seeing her but instead he felt relieved and calm as he already accept his pain and his faith b) thats why it turns back to its original form and it new of he approach in its original form he would be terrified and would not know what he felt.

      EXPANSION ON THE ELK GOD THEORY they say Morda is a child of Loki. If i remember correctly ragnarok is a war between the gods, caused by Loki shooting a mistletoe arrow at Baldur and killing him. If we assume that the monster is a child of Loki, and is hiding from the gods it may mean that ragnarok already happened and Loki lost so the leftover gods are hunting it. That or ragnarok is still happening and Morda doesn't wanna get involved because screw that pish.(interesting take btw)

I mean, as you said, it's been there for a while, I'd assume people would go missing regularly there and the locals would've learned to avoid it. Add to that the odd stabwounds he has in his chest and I'm fairly sure at least the nearest village would believe him.

    This is quite possibly one of the best horror movies to have come out of this generation. Psychological horror, cult horror, and a scary monster to top it all off. As for the monster, it is most likely a Jötunn trying to pass off as a god, and for the cultists it might as well be a god. It's not farfetched, considering that it is one of the sons of Loke, who is known to have given birth to all kinds of beastlies, jötunns being among them. Jötunns are strong, chaotic beings in Norse Mythology, and that fits this monster to a T.

      Moder is the child of the trickster god Loki and the giantess Angrboda and is associated with the natural world and the unpredictable forces of nature. Moder serves as a protector and guardian of nature and is often depicted as a complex and multifaceted figure.

The God of War series is the only thing that comes to mind from western development, but Japan has many video games where the group ends up killing a god/god-like being.

    So based on my knowledge of Norse mythology here's my theory. I can't find record and have never heard of Moda so this is entirely speculation. The Aesir heavily favor warriors or people who die in combat, that's how you get to Valhalla. Luke, during his mugging, failed to engage in combat and showed great cowardice. This could be why this God, Moda, chose him to be a "worshiper". Really Moda is punishing those who show cowardice in combat by keeping them living and worshipping it. The only way I theorize to beat it is exactly what Luke did which is fight or die fighting or get the Aesir to help but good luck there.
