    As a college student portability was the most important thing when looking at either to build a PC or get a eGPU. I was willing to sacrifice some performance for portability. Now I can carry my laptop to class, and then bring it back home and plug it in for some gaming, all while keeping all my files and stuff on a single computer. Personally, that's why the eGPU made sense to me in my situation.

      Ive been using eGPU for 1 year plus.
      Conclusion: Ive been able to game decently but yes, expect a loss of at least 20% of your cards capability.
      I have the sonnet breakway box 550 hooked with a Radeon RX 590 Sapphire Nitro Plus 8GB mem.
      My laptop is an HP zbook 15v5 G5 xeon e2176m which has been bottlenecking my performance because it has awful cooling that has drove me nuts fixing but im close to making it perform amazing, by using liquid metal on the cpu die along with a cooling pad. Im really into Star Citizen right now and that game NEEDS the CPU like no other game, and i suspect modern games will start relying heavily on cpu specially if they´re MMO with a persistent world like Star Citizen.
      IT WORKS FINE : D ... but of course im thinking about changing my laptop setup for a PC. But if i had no other choice at all and i needed the laptop then yes, its an amazing solution.
      I can play Destiny 2 with max settings 1080p at over 30fps easily xcept for really crowded areas.
      Metro Exodus 1080p High settings 30+ as well.
      All that we need for a nice gaming experience.

      Hi, im also considering an egpu with a good laptop and i am also in college
      I am thinking to buy new rtx 30 series gpu along with a good laptop. Will you suggest me to go for it as you are using that setup.
      Coz waiting for integrated 30 series gpu in laptops can take time.
      What will you suggest

    As an eGPU enthusiast I can honestly say TB3 eGPU performance is a minefield. It pays off to do your research, but most of the time you have to rely on enthusiasts self reporting these things rather than manufacturers. Some things to consider:
    1- Make sure to use a computer and enclosure with full 4x PCI-E lanes. Use the included TB3 cable that came with your enclosure or a high quality 40 Gbps cable.
    2- Even if your computer has 4x ports it probably shares its TB3 controller(s) with multiple ports. Your eGPU should not be sharing its controller with any other devices, so do your research as to which ports in your computer share one. Newer 10th Gen CPUs have integrated TB3 controllers that solve this issue by dynamically assigning controllers to ports while also having reduced overhead.
    3- Plug your eGPU directly into your computer rather than daisy chained. If your eGPU has additional ports, don't use them. It will take from your precious TB3 bandwidth.

    • @lezzard
      @lezzard 4 года назад +6

      Also, thankfully TB4 is a stricter specification which will mean more consistent results across the board.

      what if on the same TB3 bus, I also plug in an external TB3 SSD where I store my games? Would it greatly reduce the bandwidth available for the eGPU?

      What do you mean buy daisy chained? Directly to the plug?. Because my egpu sometimes goes off without knowing why.

  • @cldpt

    this video has a serious flaw: the 2070 Super is being used in a electrically power-constrained enclosure. That power supply brick is 330W, nowhere near the needs of the enclosure itself when paired to a desktop graphics card that requires about 215W just for itself. TB3 enclosure not only take a big chunk of power for themselves, USB and other peripherals, and most importantly, USB-C Power Delivery (which, granted, for this enclosure it's only 15W) but most importantly, PCIe power which goes up to 75W (this does combine with the 215W requirements of the card). But there's more at play here than just the standard TB3 x4 limit and controller/PCH overhead.
    So I am pretty sure the 2070 Super on this test is running very gimped, especially since GPU BIOSes and controllers these days seriously limit clock frequencies and overall performance when power is not detected to be enough. I'm genuinely surprised the card even powered. I know people like small eGPUs, but these are simply not suited for graphics cards above mid-range, especially with an external power brick (notable exceptions are Flex ATX power supply enclosures such as the Gigabyte Gaming boxes and other).
    And a side note: this TB3 enclosure is not even close to being the best enclosure. Mostly because of the above limitation, but also due to a range of other issues such as being outdated in 2020, with things like Razer Core Chroma, Mantiz Saturn Pro or the many Gigabyte boxes, outdated controllers, lack of support due to having being released more than 2 years ago, etc.
    I think the review did have proper care and mentioned relevant stuff on eGPU use, but the problem in the eGPU world is that there's simply too many small details that can go wrong and take performance, behavior and value away. Even the size or space or internal layout of them are a problem for temps and card mounting, or their PSUs constraining stuff, or simply abandonment by the OEMs who like HP (Omen Accelerator) or Asus (their 2 XG stations) stop supporting these niche products and no recent thunderbolt firmware will prevent it from running in recent versions of Windows or laptops with recent versions of the TB3 firmware and software properly.

    • @brandonbester703
      @brandonbester703 3 года назад

      I think what you've stated here is very true when it comes to the limitations of the GPU, however, the fact that cpu used in the laptop(6 cores and 4.5 GHZ) does not compare to that of the desktop(8 cores and 5.0GHZ). That being said i think the general idea of the video was to give people an in-sit of what an EGPU is like.

  • @willl4575
    @willl4575 4 года назад +1

    Great review Adam, was not expecting something so in depth, I have no interest in e-gpus until we get enough bandwidth as you said maybe with TB 4, I do wonder though that for GPU acceleration in adobe, CAD, Blender, Resolve etc.. I think in most case the TB 3 limitation won't be as pronounced so it can still be a good solution if you don't wan't to go full tower or build SFF. My recommendation would be not to bother going over an RTX 2060 or 2060 Super if you really need the extra vram, especially a couple of months away from ampere and RDNA 2. PS: Great vid, would love to see some more Adam GPU gaming videos, me likes!

    I use this egpu with my xps 13 with a rtx 2060 and it’s great for portability and living in small spaces as a college student. The tb3 hasn’t been an issue for me perhaps because I display the video on a different monitor than the laptop screen. Definitely expensive but I think for me the portability was worth it and through testing the performance drop seems to be minimal. Great video 👍

    Thanks for the feedback, Adam. Personally, I going to use it to render using C4D and Redshift, combining an internal 2070 Super and 2080 Super in the GPU. Seems like there is very little performance drop for that use case scenario. Maybe TB4 might close the gap, but we will have to wait a while.

    Excellent review! Finally someone has come up with comprehensive comparisons in real world scenarios. Thank you, Adam!
    Now the question is why the industry doesn't design a new type of connection that would allow laptops to utilize the full potential of GPUs. Is it not that an easy task to do or there's not enough demand?

    Very happy you made this. I honestly was considering an egpu, but after this, I’ll stick with a laptop with a good internal gpu. I don’t plan on using a monitor and the performance gain is not strong enough the justify the cost. Only perk I see is upgradability but at what cost if your not gaming on an external monitor. Anyhoo, thanks for the content. My wife thanks you and so does my wallet. 😂

    Really grateful for this video. I do hove a high end desktop at home. and an OK gaming laptop that makes you forget about any power draining AAA games because of the FPS and the heat. My situation is that I travel for months for work and cant bring with me my tower every time I fly somewhere. So I tried the egpu and for the competitive games I play they are doing great. So I thought that this will be a solution. No need to bring gaming laptops to meetings, just go home dock it with one TB3 cable and power and game on with your professional laptop.
    Thanks again, and surely for any other configuration it would not justify the hassle.

    Can you do the other tests with a lower end GPU as well? Like the 2060? Just to see if there is less off a difference between eGPU and tower performance bc there's less performance and probably less bandwith needed?

    Control is an awesome game. I have a 2070 XC in my tower and I play that on max settings with RTX Off on a 3440x1440 screen and it plays nice and smooth. I find in that game I am
    moving around so much that I don't even have time to notice the difference between rtx off or on except for the times when I am wandering around collecting little story artifacts and watching cutscenes.
    I just ordered an xps 17 with the 1920*1200 screen and rtx 2060 so I am hoping when I am not down in the basement but want to get a game in upstairs in the living room or something it will perform well enough with rtx off.

I wanted to know what your experience was switching from the internal card to the external card (i.e. what happened when you unplugged it?). Are there weird issues with drivers between GTX and RTX? So in what way does the eGPU not work with Quadro? Does it not work at all, or does it just not make as big of a difference? I have a Thinkpad P43s with i7-8565u (a ridiculously slow cpu for some reason-some 4th gen i7 cpus can out perform it), 24gb ram, 1tb ssd, and quadro p520. Gaming is out of the question. Even with simple games such as minecraft you are lucky to get 20 fps and thats when it isn't thermal throttling, which happens almost all the time. I really "need" either a PC or an eGPU (they seem to also be around the same price as well). Which would you recommend?

    so do i understand right, the resolution which was sent to the notebook screen back was mostly 4K? Or do you "rendered" in 4K but downscaled to 1080p to the screens?
    Would have been better to play in 1080p, less bandwidth used on the TB3 connection and therefor better fps.
    I barely use 4K on my 55" OLED TV, mostly still on 1440p to maintain at least 90 fps.

    Watching this on Sept. 2020,
    with laptop options like the Omen15 or the Asus G14 - 15 and 14 inch laptops that ship with 2070 MaxQ or 2060 MaxQ respectively that run pretty similar FPS numbers kind of make eGPUs obsolete in my opinion. At least in terms of brass tax gaming. There may be other scenarios where it's worth it, but I cannot see it right now.
    Maybe thunderbolt 4, or some other BUS innovation in the horizon can make it relevant again?

    i think that the best way to increase egpu performance is to use lower resolution textures, as it will decrease the amount of data transfered with tb3

    • @freerideshuttle
      @freerideshuttle 3 года назад

      Yes, and maybe no, higher resolution would make the card run more in comparison with the cpu. So a 4k 120fps is a better use than a 1080p 360fps in an egpu setup(I might be wrong tho). Here about textures, image sharpening, triangles, rtx ligths and shades, I really don't know for shure, would be a great test with the new series of graphic cards.

    Is the 2070 Super "too powerful" for Thunderbolt 3 and mobile CPU's? It would be interesting to see if for example a great 1080p /good 1440p card such as the 1660 Super would be less bottlenecked and therefore get the same desktop FPS /performance with eGPU. Or does it not work this way meaning that in order to get 1660 Super desktop performance over a eGPU you need to run a 2060 / 2070 Super?

    Hello. You might consider comparing games at different quality settings like ultra, high, medium, and low on Thunderbolt. Why do that? Perhaps the lower graphics quality reduces the Thunderbolt bottleneck, bringing the performance closer between the desktop and the notebook with an external graphics card.

    I think the wast majority consider this piece of information as one of the most essential, when deciding on eGPU yes or no.
    I realized that the difference gets smaller, the more the GPU is needed....hence 4k and high grafics made the difference smaller then 1080 and mid grafic where the difference was ENOURMOUS.
    But there is a catch to this. Why is it like this, because from my expirience (watching 1 trilion youtube videos on pc parts because I am too broke to buy them) this behaviour tends to show when there is a cpu bottleneck.
    Not saying you laptops cpu is bad, but maybe just not good enough for the GPU. Either it's the CPU itself or it might even be thermal problems of on the CPU (don't know if you checked if the CPU was thermal throtteling.....).
    Also Thunderbolt 4 might cause a huge shift in eGPU performance...

      Ha! This is what I think is the biggest problem as well. I have the DELL Precision with i9 and Quadro P2000. The CPU will only run at full clock for a minute or so, before it throttles back down to 60-70 % because of THERMAL ISSUES. The small laptop doesn’t have what it takes to dissipate all that heat.

      Unfortunately I haven't done any hard testing on this, but I can tell you I saw some sizable temperature drops back when I was doing these videos. Most laptops have a shared cooling system (heat pipes and fans) for the CPU and a dedicated GPU. When an eGPU is being used, the discrete GPU in the laptop isn't heating up, which allows for the CPU to use most of the cooling available and not have to compete.

    Is your TB3 only 20Gb and not 40Gb?

    • @chocobanana5262
      @chocobanana5262 3 года назад +3

      All TB3 have 40GB/s but when running an eGPU the whole bandwidth isn't fully utilized for display unlike the PCIe on a desktop board where any card connected to that slot will get all of its bandwidth.
      Both the device w/ TB3 and eGPU have separate/different board and chipsets. Communications between these 2 different chipsets will consume bandwidth, not to mention the data transferred via TB cable instead of direct PCIe on a desktop board, that will also consume bandwidth. There are other more factors that you can research as to why that 40GB/s isn't fully utilized by eGPU's for graphics performance alone which unfortunately is the reason of performance loss on eGPU.
      But if you're willing to sacrifice 20-40% graphics card performance loss for mobility then using an eGPU is good.

    I’m fairly certain that the biggest performance issues comes from your CPU. It may be an i9 but I have the DELL PRECISION which has a near identical chassis, with the i9, and it will only run full clock for a minute, before it throttles to 60-70 % due to thermal issues. The CPU will hit ~95 C and then settle to ~92 C after it throttles. So if the laptop were capable of using the CPU to its full potential, I suspect the differences between the eGPU and tower setup would be considerably smaller.
    But that would require better cooling and it’s not exactly easy to achieve on an ultrabook.
    Now I’m almost tempted to buy an eGPU, cobble together some external cooling solution and see if it makes a difference.

    Ive been using a 5700Xt in a Razer core X chroma with my 2018 15" i9-8950hk MacBook Pro and It has made a huge difference in what games I can play in Mac OS and in Windows, I've been using it since February last year and have been using custom drivers from Bootcampdrivers.com, and every update the performance just gets better. I do have my card lightly overclocked but asides from that the drivers that get released just keep improving its performance every time. I only have a 1080p 60hz monitor, but I'm thinking of upgrading to a 1440p 75hz monitor eventually.
    Death stranding runs like silk at 1080p on ultra settings, 60fps on metro exodus on high, DX12, tessellation/hairworks on and Shaders (render resolution) at 2x. And Halo 2 runs perfectly without issues on enhanced settings. A eGPU is very worth it IMO if you want to game and keep portability high, which is especially important for me as a collage student.
    10/10 would recommend getting, and the power supply in it is more than powerfull enough (700W) to run 6000 series cards

      MXM cards, while appealing, are expensive, require taking off part of the laptop cooling system before installation, and applying new thermal paste. That's a lot of drawbacks for the average Joe. Can't we all agree a x8 ExpressCard slot would be a cheap, high-performance, easier solution to an ageing on-board GPU?
