Traveling from Los Angeles to San Francisco for the New Year’s celebration 2016. Watch the 10 hours ride on the train in around 10 minutes. For those train lovers ;)
As a former airline employee for nearly 30 years I have travelled by air to the majority of places around the world but I have had the most exciting memories whenever I did it by rail. Slower or faster, the older or more modern they were still a good journey. Unfortunately Brazil has quit with passengers trains in the 1980's and even the old charming overnight service between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro which I have used a few times for a week end has gone!
No trains in Brazil WOW. I did not realize there are no trains, I mean, I have never been to Brazil. I once watched a documentary about a bus ride From Rio to Lima - Transoceânica, the world's longest bus journey, on Deutsche Welle Documentry You Tube channel, which was amazing.
Took this ride in 1996...The train broke down about half way and got to watch the sunset over the Pacific during the engine transfer...Ride took 15 hours L.A. To San Francisco...Great memory. #LostForWords
I can't believe how Santa Barbara looks now! I was engineer on the Starlight in'88/89, then, only on Fridays until 1992, when I went to Metrolink as test engineer.
I have ridden all the AMTRAK routes west of St. Louis. THe Surfliner and Coast Starlight are good rides. I have been to the L.A. train station 3 times as part of my 5 trips out west on my own and really enjoyed being there. Good Mexican restaurant across the street. Rail travel fan from St. Louis
I like riding the Amtrak trains. I am not driving. I can walk around anytime I want. There is food and drink. I can get comfortable and most of all I like to just sit and watch the scenery.
I've travelled on Amtrak train (even former private RR Company before Amtrak merged) for 50 years. So, I go once (sometime twice) a year in any part of USA as I love it and no matter if on time or delays.
I love trains i took train from Regina Saskatchewan Canada to Toronto Ontario back in 1990 to see my real Dad before he passed away. We no longer can catch train from my city. Now we have to go Saskatoon to catch it.

For the record, the LA river has a very controlled flow. The flow is constricted to replenish as much groundwater as possible, so it doesn't reach the ocean unless rain or melting snow drives the flow. Edit: prior to the development of the LA flood control system in the early 20th century, the entire LA basin area would routinely flood after heavy rain seasons.
Well, well well!!."It`s always sunny in California"!!!.What a nice ride!!.Probably we don`t have the European TGV-(yet)-,but what a delicious & unforgetable trip,to be enjoyed not just once, but certainly,a million times!!!.I Love Calif,& all over,I LOVE AMERICA!!!.
Interesting train ride. It actually runs between Los Angeles and Oakland, with a bus shuttle to San Francisco. If you come to visit I suggest taking a coast or mountain route, as it's much more interesting. The majority of this trip is through the valley, and while it is a spectacularly productive agricultural area, the landscape is pretty boring. In general Americans don't use trains much for passenger traffic. Trains are used mostly for freight, so you won't get anywhere near the experience you get in Europe, Japan, or China. A bus trip up the coast or through the mountains would likely be better.
going to Union Station is worth the trip. awesome building. took the train from LA to SLO and back one time. the trip there was great. the trip back was 7 hours late and it looked like a riot took place.
I've risen this train a couple of times. The last one was the train to Chico, CA. I avoided the traffic along Interstate 5. It was nice to relax going up there. Granted, it was slower than driving, but it was nice to travel via train.
Ok, that waiter needs to be the "wacky friend" on a sitcom. Also, loved that reaction, "No, no, no...we are different from Russians!" LOL You're damned right you are!
There are many beautiful train stations in the U.S., Chicago is great and big; San Diego is not so big but really nice. You can see them on the net but live is always better.
Great video and thanks for sharing your trip. Bummed that you did not get a seat on the left side of the train. That is where you have a great view of the Pacific Ocean for a few hours. Too bad you also did not get a seat in the dining car on the left side either. It is a railroad tradition to share a table with strangers if there is only 2 of you. You meet the most interesting people (sometimes). Hope you had a great trip!
TRAIN is very wonderful . DoubleTrain . Train travels is very Peaceful. Comfortable seats. Food is very good variety items. Services nice. Comfortable seats. Beautiful natures. I like this video. Thank you so much sharing this Video .
Great video Henrich. I traveled the same train the opposite direction a few years ago after a Cruise from LA to Vancouver, Canada. Got on the train in Seattle. Enjoyed the ride, but just 2 months ago drove round trip from Palm Springs to Seattle on the 5 Freeway (inland) and missed seeing the ocean during the days. Glad you got in a few "selfies" along the way.
Shiben Chakravorty people are less and too much spcae. But if you live here you so see dirt in some areas that you see in India. And this country is very well planned and it's strict very strict. India is way behind in such things and civic sense, respecting others privacy etc...
Americans prefer and are used to traveling with cars or with planes. No real incentives to improving/modernizing the trains. I know- because I live here (specially in Southern California)
Amtrak isn't fast, but it's a still a great way to travel in the US. Stop complaining about the speed. It's comfortable, clean, a great way to see the beauty of the US as you cross it, and also a terrific way to meet and have conversations with all types of people. Just enjoy it for what it is.
And almost 80 years later, our diesel electric passenger locomotives go the same speed as the EMD F's and E's from the 1940's. Oh well, at least they're air conditioned now.
My mom ued to tell stories of riding the trains. She lived close to Paint Lick Kentucky and they could take the train from there to where ever. They went to Chicago for a while, others went to Detroit, NYC, Washington DC; wherever. Think of how throttled be are now by the bare bones passenger service. Kentucky where I live has ONE train sta and you must have a car to get there, unless you live in Maysville on the Ohio River.
Precisaríamos de um serviço desse Aqui no Brasil!!! É incompreensível o porquê de não haver, principalmente no Sudeste, esse modal de transporte!! Ótimo vídeo da época!! 🇧🇷
Traveling to Oakland and then getting a bus to SF might have been a mistake. The Caltrain from San Jose to San Francisco is faster than the Coast Starlight from San Jose to Oakland and then the Thruway Bus.
It's been a ten hour ride since the original Coast Daylight was inaugurated in 1937. BTW-next time get a seat on the ocean (west) side of the car. The train follows the beautiful Pacific Ocean coastline for 100 miles and you missed it all.

Town, coastline, hills, pastureland, city, it has got everything in one frame. Beautiful ride; purely idyllic!
I can't believe how Santa Barbara looks now! I was engineer on the Starlight in'88/89, then, only on Fridays until 1992, when I went to Metrolink as test engineer.
The waiter was funny!!!!! I've seen him on the Empire Builder from Pasco, WA to Chicago!!! Very nice guy!!!
Riding the CA trains along the coast is the best. Comfortable, no traffic, repeat..no traffic, plenty of space for work or a nap. Outlets galore.
Louis
The Surfliner begins in San Diego and connects with the Coast Starlight which goes all the way up to Seattle. That is a very scenic ride.
It's a wonderful train journey!
I like riding the Amtrak trains. I am not driving. I can walk around anytime I want. There is food and drink. I can get comfortable and most of all I like to just sit and watch the scenery.
Good idea!
They should operate on more routes and more frequent.

Travelled by train from Sacramento to Seattle.Nice experience.
If only airports had waiting areas like this.

Danke fürs Teilen!
thanks Henrich from brasil
As a European its fascinating seeing that is exactly how train travel used to be 40 yrs ago in Europe. Slow.
Ha ha! Yes, it is pathetic how backward the U.S. is, in terms of railroad technology.
Haa. Can't compare
