  • Lori Lake, communications and education specialist at the Children’s Institute (CI), University of Cape Town gives a presentation on the latest edition of the South African Child Gauge that was edited by Maylene Shung-King, Lori Lake, David Sanders and Michael Hendricks. The presentation was recorded on Zoom as part of the UCT Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health's Social Responsiveness lectures. Following the presentation Lori asked that a correction be made to a comment she made at the end. She notes that only 14% of children are orphans and of these the majority (9%) have lost their father and still have a living mother, while only 0.3% of children live in child-only households. These children are indeed vulnerable, but so too are the 1 in 3 children living below the food poverty line.
