    Hi Claire, I'm a bit slow watching this vlog but, wow.... what a fantastic jacket 👌. You did so well with that vent...it's something I know I would struggle to get my head around, so great that Closet Case has a sew along 👍. I would definitely try this and I would make the same version as you as I love a short boxy jacket. I adore the extra details of the sleeve pocket and back vent...it just gives it more style don't you think 😁. Thanks for a great review Claire and you look fabulous in your version 💖😊😘

    Thanks Claire for the great review. I have been looking for a coat pattern and the Sienna just might be it. My tip for button holes, always make a sample which is a smaller scale of your garment, including seam allowance, interfacing etc. to practise on.

    Lovely make Claire. Agree size down on the hips a bit, but it stills looks good. Buttonholes are a nightmare on some computerised machine, cutting cost by putting in cheap sensors that deteriat very quickly but give you 500 stitch
    selection and uneven buttonholes. Once upon a time if you paid top dollar for a machine it was gold, these days no. Manufacturers just expect you too upgrade and pay even more when things start to go wrong. My answer was too buy a buttonholer attachment for my 201 Singer, never had a problem since.

    • @Penguinandpear
      @Penguinandpear  5 лет назад

      Thanks Audrey! My machine is due a service so I really should get that checked out soon. I do have a special attachment which generates the size of the buttonhole. Theres another bit like a tray I should use as I think that helps feed the fabric through.

    Going to be using this in an upcoming class. I’m swapping the sleeves as you said and I will check out their sew along. Thanks! I’m using a cotton rayon blend with plenty of drape. I will make a toile and will use a lightweight suiting once I try this.

    So well done on your jacket Claire and thanks for sharing. I know buttonholes are lots of people's nemesis. Yours look good but how frustrating when you cannot trust your machine. In my opinion some makes are better than others. My daughter has a Janome and a recent Necchi. Both are impossible for buttonholes but brilliant machines apart from that. I have an ancient Bernina 33 years old and a more recent Bernina model. Both sew superb buttonholes every time. So maybe if you ever upgrade maybe go and try some out. 33 years and still going says it all, I know they are a little pricier but their guarantees are brilliant. Once again bed your jacket. 🎈🎈🎈

    • @Penguinandpear
      @Penguinandpear  5 лет назад

      Thanks Jenni. I would love a bernina though saying that sians mum had quite a lot of trouble with hers when she got it... I guess no machine is immune. I have no complaints on my brother otherwise but yes would be good not to have a panic attack at the idea of doing a buttonhole! Lol glad you like the jacket!

    On buttonholes - exactly the same experience here. My Brother Star 120E does an automatic buttonhole but I must help it feed through or it just gets stuck. Also helps if I reinforce with interfacing. That coat looks so stylish, I love your bias tape on the seams.

    • @Penguinandpear
      @Penguinandpear  5 лет назад

    Congratulations on a really well constructed jacket, you've come a long way in your sewing skills. I agree with you that it's best to take time with a project like this as it's turned out so well. The only thing I would suggest is that before you make another jacket don't adjust the sizing until you've tried this jacket on with more autumnal clothing. As the weather turns colder but before it gets to heavy overcoat weather you'll want to wear a tee or shirt with a jumper on top. I look forward to seeing you make another. Once again well done on making a lovely jacket 👍

      Thank you Rosyclaire! I appreciate that. Yeah I did wear it with a thick LDT and I couldn't go smaller in the arms or shoulders but I'd probably not grade out at the hip. Karina from Lifting Pins and Needles has been a great sewing mentor encouraging my developing sewing skills.

    Jacket came out beautifully. Love the pocket lining and bias bind. You mentioned using 4 different presser feet. Can you tell us which ones and what you used them for? I have a Viking machine and am happy with the buttonholes.

    • @Penguinandpear
      @Penguinandpear  5 лет назад

      Thanks Nana. The presser feet I used were: a normal one with a transparent middle used for general sewing at 5/8th, an edge stitch foot with an edge on the underside to push your seams against, good for topstitching, a 1/4 foot and a foot with a long bit sticking out the side with lots of increments on it, for guidance. I hope this helps..

    Pockets look great. Taking the time to baste has really worked out. I think you look great in that glorious colour. I’d also say that the shoulder fit looks good. I think that nailing the shoulder fit helps make garments look like they actually fit you - it doesn’t matter so much if they are looser in the body as long as shoulders at least sit in the right place. I’m with you do some sewing little and often. That’s what I did with my ginger jeans. It isn’t complex but just has a lot of steps. I hope you enjoy wearing it and bravo on your make

    Awwww Claire you are such a bad influence 😘! I wasn't that sold on this pattern until I saw your version - IT"S FANTASTIC AND YOU LOOK FABULOUS IN IT. I can see so much potential for different fabrics depending on season - barkcloth, coloured denim, linen, needlecord/corduroy, drill, so many choices. I adore home made bias tape and I've got loads of Liberty lawn scraps I can use. I totally agree about Frixon pens, I try and avoid them unless it's in the seam allowance. Great tip about the shoulders I will be checking that as mine are super narrow and I always have to make adjustments. Narrow shoulders and big boobs are such an annoying combination - I blame my mother for that as she was the same 🤣🤣🤣

I had an ancient Singer and it had a buttonhole attachment. There was a plastic thingy that fit inside of it and that gave you the type and size of buttonhole.Loved that gadget. You would probably have fun taking patterns with buttons and finding alternative fasteners.
