Buddy Holly (22), Richie Valens (17), The Big Bopper (28) died together in a plane crash in Fegruary 1959. This is caled "The Day The Music Died." Yes, Buddy Holly was also playing lead guitar on this song.
Fun Facts: The Beatles named their band after Buddy Holly and The Crickets. Crickets and Beetles are bugs. Instead of spelling it Beetles, they used Beat as in the beat of the music, hence The Beatles. The 60's British band The Hollies also named their band after Buddy Holly.
Buddy Holly, along with Little Richard and Chuck Berry helped to spearhead a movement where performers wrote their own songs - something virtually unheard of in popular music at that time.
Shawn and Mel. Buddy Holly is a Rock and Roll legend. "That'll Be the Day" came out in (1956). For a time, his music was even above the great Elvis Presley. He was one of the first rockers to write in strings and horns into his music. He was one of the most prolific singer/writers in Rock & Roll history. He married a Puerto Rican woman who worked for the music company that produce his records. He and his band "The Crickets'" in (1957). Were the first white group to ever perform at the all black Appolo Theatre in Harlem New York City. And they were a big and successful hit at the Apollo Theatre. On one of the saddest days ever in Rock & Roll history on February 3rd 1959...Also known as "The Day the Music Died." Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP Richardson aka the Big Bopper all died in a plane crash. Their legacy has lived on in a song penned back in (1971) by Don Maclean (American Pie). This song went on to become one of the greatest songs ever written. And millions of people throughout the years have been trying to analyze the song even up till present day. And the controversy of its lyrics still lives on. Making it (American Pie) one of the most discussed and listen to song in the history of music. Great reaction to a true Rock & Roll legend. Awesome!
It should have been called Buddy Hollywood, its FULL of big factual errors from showing his parents not being supportive of him, 100% untrue and hurt them deeply, to awful caricature depictions of anyone he knew..it was good as far as bringing him to the forefront in the 70s but it is littered with inaccuracies. There are several good documentaries including one from Paul Mccartney that are much more accurate and don't distort the life and history of one of musics greatest pioneers
La Bamba is also very ,very inaccurate including showing Valens as a migrant farm worker and creating a fictitious conflict between Valens and his brother that simply was not true..entertaining film...but very distorting of the facts.
And no, I'm not trying to be a know it all jerk. Music and history is what I do and I just try to let people know how far from the truth those movies are..when I was 10 I wrote Buddys drummer a letter asking why the movie was so full of huge mistakes and on xmas eve of 1978 he called me on the phone, to my shock, and gave me a succinct explanation as to why. I later met him and was impressed he had time for a 10 year old kid. So forgive me for getting on my soap box .Buddy means the world to me.
Fun Fact : Buddy Holly was a Texan , and he was inspired by John Wayne's character in "The Searchers" who would routinely say , "That'll Be The Day" throughout the movie
Other fun facts he wrote the whole song in about a half an hour, this was actually released as a finished song when it was a demo as the tempo was much slower than the band intended, oh and this was the first song recorded by a little band from Great Britain called The Quarrymen, or you might know them better as the Beatles
The famous plane crash involved Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper whose lives were all tragically cut short. The song American Pie by Don McClean was written about this about 10 years after the crash. This event was written up in the newspapers as the Day the Music Died when it was reported in the late 50s.
She also covered his "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" on '74's Heart Like A Wheel album, which included her cover of J.T.'s, " You Can Close Your Eyes ( It's Alright).
Other great Buddy Holly (and The Crickets) hit songs include "It's So Easy", "Rave On", "Oh Boy", "Maybe Baby", "Words of Love", "Everyday", "Peggy Sue", "Not Fade Away", "It Doesn't Matter Anymore", and "True Love Ways." Buddy Holly was so great he was still having new hits on the radio 4 years after he died. Too bad he only made 3 albums and a few stray singles before he died.
Buddy was from Lubbock, Tx. A small garage band. Cut their first record and shopped it around to local radio stations, who refused to play it because the stations thought they were black. Buddy mailed their music to stations across the country. One DJ loved the sound so invited Buddy the Crickets to come play in an all black club. Was the crowd ever shocked when they took the stage. Through boos and hisses they started playing and in just minutes had the crowd on their feet and rocking the joint. They became world famous and were mentors to young garage bands, one of whom were the Beatles.
Actually, they were booed for 3 days, then, being the genius he was, Buddy decided to drop the Crickets' music and switch to his knowledge of R&B, starting with "Bo Didley" and playing every "race" song (As black music was called at the time) they knew, until they ran out of them! (Some of the R&B songs the Crickets recorded were- Money Honey, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Midnight Shift and Ting a Ling... these are likely some of the songs they did at the Apollo that won them the audience!)
Charles Hardin "Buddy" Holly, Richard Steven Valenzuela aka Richie Valens, and J.P. Richardson aka "The Big Bopper", was killed in a plane crash on February 3, 1959 in Clear Lake, Iowa. They were touring in a bus that kept breaking down during a brutal winter storm, when Buddy decided to charter a private plane to get them to their next venue in Moorhead, Minnesota. The plane crashed in a corn field shortly after take-off. Buddy's other hits were "Maybe Baby", "Peggy Sue", "Words of Love", "True Love Ways", and "Oh Boy" among others.
Finally, some great music by singer song-writer Buddy Holly who was one of the early pioneers of 1950's rock & roll. His style was influenced by gospel music, country music, and rhythm & blues acts. He wrote a lot of songs during his short life. "Maybe Baby", "Peggy Sue", "Bo Diddley", "Everyday", "Oh, Boy!", "Not Fade Away", "Rave On", "It's So Easy", "True Love Ways" etc. He was only 22 when he died in a plane crash along with Ritchie Valens & The Big Bopper. This tragedy was later referred to by Don McLean as "The Day the Music Died" in his song "American Pie".
Just a bIt of trivia: The line The Day the Music Died in the song American Pie refers to the death of Buddy Holly and other well known performers in a horrible plane crash. Those who died were some of the originators of Rock and Roll and their deaths had a devastating impact on the teenage fans who were inspired by the performers and the new genre of music they were creating. No "teenage" culture was recognized until after WWII in the 1950's. Young people did not have seperate music from their parents until the emergence of Rock and Roll. Glad you are going back and discovering the history of Rock and Roll. What music comes after seems to make more sense when we understand where it came from. Great reaction. Cheers from Canada
My 1st and greatest musical hero along with the Beatles. His music has been with me for over 50 years and I never get tired of it. Buddy was the epitome of the term legend.
Buddy Holly is revered by both Country music and Rock. His influence is miles deep in both forms of music. I believe he is in both Country snd Rock Hall’s of Fame. Yes he was “all that”.👍
Buddy, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis were all pioneers influencing the Beatles, Stones and more groups. Love his voice, had many good songs. One of the most beloved singers of the past.
My aunt that's 5 years older than me was named Peggy Sue. Nice to know that grandma rocked being down in hazard Kentucky! Love that we talk more now than ever before
Sadly we lost him, big bopper and the incredible little Ritchie valens in the horrible plane crash. After it happened his wife was so distraught that she lost their baby.
Find and watch The Buddy Holly story starring Gary Busey playing Buddy. It's a great music biopic of Buddy Holly from his start to the plane crash. Buddy was a newlyewed with a pregnant wife when he died. She was so distraught that she miscarried. Watch the movie!
@The Dan That is your opinion and you're entitled to it but I am quite sure not everyone feels the same as you as I've read several comments suggesting they watch the movie.
@The Dan I saw you posted a comment and deleted it. I read it. Why did you delete it? Speak your mind if you have something to say. Don't post it then delete it. If you post it, you leave it.
The late great Buddy Holly..Buddy is from the town I'm living in Lubbock, Texas...I have a friend who lives next door to his childhood house...I've heard that Buddy brought Lil Richard to his house to meet the family, and Buddy's dad made Lil Richard come in through the backdoor...we have built a brand new concert hall in Buddy's honor and have a statue of him, as well as a statue of those famous glasses..if I remember right, some of his band mates are still alive..but Buddy is the biggest thing to come from here..he is missed
So many of these pioneers of rock and roll can lay claim to the title of "Best of..." To me it's Buddy Holly. What he did in three years is amazing. Prior to his untimely death he had begun messing around in the studio. He was experimenting before anybody else. Had he lived I believe he would have been one of the most famous song writer/producers of all time. It's just my belief but, to me, Buddy is the King of Rock and Roll. Little Richard is a close second. Check out "Everyday." It's a simple song but it's one of my favorites. Nice reaction. Thanks. Peace
He was killed in the plane crash with Richie Valens anf the Big Bopper. He was 22. Richie Valens was 17 and the Big Bopper was 28. What a horrendous loss.
Sorry but the Busey film is far from the truth. I've been a fan of Buddy for years been to Lubbock and stood by his grave and read a lot about him. Busey tried hard but was nothing at all like the real thing.
Buddy Holly was the man! He influenced so many artists including the Beatles. Buddy was one of if not the first white man to play the Apollo and lit it up like a Christmas tree.
One of my favorite British Invasion bands was The Hollies. For Christmas, you can decorate your house with boughs of holly, hang budweiser cans on it and call it Buddy Holly.
'That'll be the day` is a line from the movie "THE SERCHERS " as quoted by John Wayne. Sadly lost his life in the plane that shook the musical world. Check out the movie: "the Buddy Holly Story"
My brother was about 7 and watching The Searchers when my mother asked him for the 5th time to take out the trash or he would be punished. He turned to her in his best John Wayne and said "that'll be the day". My brother came pretty close to a beat down that day 👀 He's 60 now and still loves to watch the movie and listen to Buddy 🎶🎵
At the time of Buddy's death...the Crickets had gone back to Lubbock, Texas. Buddy quickly put a band together for the Winter Tour. That band consisted of Waylon Jennings on Bass. and Tommy Alsup (I believe on drums) After Buddy's death, Waylon went back to being a DJ in Littlefield and Lubbock, Texas. He would have to wait a few more years for his musical talent to be recognized. Tommy Alsup became the owner of the first large chain of Alsups Convenience Stores. My parents went to school with Waylon in Littlefield, Texas. Buddy Holly is the best!
Buddy was a GIANT and he was a GENIUS. You'll do yourselves and a lot of viewers a whole lot of good drilling down on him. Of course, he, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash, what Don Maclean sang about in "The Day the Music Died." Happened a week before my birth. Outlaw music Hall of Famer Waylon Jennings was part of his band, the Crickets, but gave away his seat on the plane. 62 years later the Texas League Lubbock minor league baseball team is The Crickets.
Ohhhh my godddddd Buddy Holly was my first childhood crush. My dad and I still sing this while my dad plays guitar at family gatherings. 😭😭😭 He had such a great voice.
One of the true founders of rock and roll. The music radio stations didn't know what to do with it as rock was so new and different from the pop music of the day. However, the kids knew what they liked. and I was one of them!
Yall gonna have me in tears today singing my daddy's fav. it'll be 6 years he's been gone Dec. 2nd., daddy even had those bottlecap glasses thats think why he liked him similar appearence
In my opinion you guys are " The Best" music reactors on RUclips. Enjoy all your video reactions , specially those of my era ( 50's DooWop, 60's through the 80's) 1,000%👍👍❤️
Hi Shawn and Mel, and yes he died with Richie Valens (Valenzuela), J P Richardson "The Big Bopper" and Buddy and the pilot all died in 2/3/1959 RIP. A song that was written by Buddy and Bob Montgomery before he made it huge called "Down the Line", one of my favorites
Studio recordings are great because most of the time it is when the artist first made it it is still new and exciting for the artist. Live recordings are great because you get to see what the artist looked like at a show sometimes they would improvise like extend instrumental solos etc.
Bob Dylan said that he felt the torch passed to him when Buddy performed at the Duluth Armory Building a couple of days before the crash. Bob born in Duluth drove from Hibbing in the cold of winter to the show. He said that he was up front and locked eyes with him.
Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.P. " The Big Bopper" Richardson were killed in a plane crash just outside of Clear Lake, Iowa back in February 1959. This day is commonly known as the day the music died. Don McLean wrote and recorded a song called "American Pie" which referenced and paid tribute those who perished in that crash. Buddy Holly was known as an innovative and talented singer, songwriter and guitarist whose star was on the rise.
People born around 1980 had the best exposure to music. We were close to the 50s when music began to change, and heard it all on the radio back then. Then we lived through the 80s and 90s to music today. I know the lyrics to countless songs over the last 70+ years from all genres and it's quite sad LOL
@Shawn and Mel- It was called the day the music died. You are correct about buddy Holly passing away in a plane crash with big bopper and Richie Valens. He was just 22. Buddy Holly is one of the greatest to ever do it. He played lead guitar, wrote every one of his songs, and of course was a great singer. It was Buddy Holly and the crickets. Please react to True love ways and Peggy sue. Both great holly songs.
I still have my original record album "The Buddy Holly Story" released in 1959 about 3 weeks after the plane crash. This song and most of his hits are on it. I'll never forget walking into my house the day my mother told me "I heard on the radio a few minutes ago that Buddy Holly just died in a plane crash."
“In June 1956, Holly along with his older brother Larry as well as Allison and Sonny Curtis went to see the film The Searchers, starring John Wayne, in which Wayne repeatedly used the phrase "that'll be the day". This line of dialogue inspired the young musicians.[5]” It’s true, I went to [5]! Besides having great taste in music, he must have had the same taste for film.
Buddy Holly (22), Richie Valens (17), The Big Bopper (28) died together in a plane crash in Fegruary 1959. This is caled "The Day The Music Died." Yes, Buddy Holly was also playing lead guitar on this song.

Wow I never thought of that!!!
Don't skip the fact they might have done it different but contemporaries had already snagged up "The Hollies".
Hey, you are pretty smart! Buddy was my high school music hero. Thanks for the kind comment/ fact.

OMG THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! No one has ever responded like you folks. This song is DARK. Insanely DARK. You two picked up on it, fricking awesome.
One of the true founders of rock and roll. The music radio stations didn't know what to do with it as rock was so new and different from the pop music of the day. However, the kids knew what they liked. and I was one of them!
Totally right ! Buddy and Chuck were the fathers of r & R!
Yes Buddy, Richie and, Big Bopper were on the same plane!
Love these songs mom raised me on them.
He bring us all the rock and roll
He got the line from the John Wayne film The Searchers. He kept saying " That'll be the day"👍
Buddy is the true King for me
Hi Shawn and Mel, and yes he died with Richie Valens (Valenzuela), J P Richardson "The Big Bopper" and Buddy and the pilot all died in 2/3/1959 RIP.
Anything done by Buddy Holly sounds so fresh and clean compared to other recordings of the time. He was a production genius as well.
Great reaction to Buddy Holly. Also suggest Bill Haley and the Comets song Rock Around The Clock. 👍👍👍
"I can't remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride Something touched me deep inside the day the music died."
People born around 1980 had the best exposure to music. We were close to the 50s when music began to change, and heard it all on the radio back then. Then we lived through the 80s and 90s to music today.
I know the lyrics to countless songs over the last 70+ years from all genres and it's quite sad LOL
Well Alright -Buddy Holly
Buddy Holly was from Lubbock Texas, that's where I was born and raised
Early rock and roll was short sweet and to the point and easy to dance to and usually had something to say
Got to love those 12 bar blues riffs.
Indeed this is what rock and roll was when it was just in its infancy
Peggy Sue, Not Fade Away, Oh Boy, and Maybe Baby. Awesome reaction guys.
this is als the start of rock & roll .
His song Peggy Sue was dedicated to the love of his life name Peggy Sue. And that music is called Rockabilly ♥️♥️ ❤️✌️👍
February 3, 1959. "The Day the Music Died." Three awesome brothers- Holly, Valens, and the Big Bopper. RIP
Our rock n roll founders
@Shawn and Mel- It was called the day the music died. You are correct about buddy Holly passing away in a plane crash with big bopper and Richie Valens. He was just 22. Buddy Holly is one of the greatest to ever do it. He played lead guitar, wrote every one of his songs, and of course was a great singer. It was Buddy Holly and the crickets. Please react to True love ways and Peggy sue. Both great holly songs.
Banger.
What a legend
Wow indeed! Check out some history 👏 on him. He was the start of a movement. Watch his Ed Sullivan performance
This line of dialogue inspired the young musicians.[5]”
It’s true, I went to [5]!
Besides having great taste in music, he must have had the same taste for film.
