The Drifters had a lot of hits. My favorites are "Under The Boardwalk", "Up On The Roof" and "Saturday Night At The Movies". Also try Ben E. King doing my favorites, "Stand By Me" and "Spanish Harlem". Those days man.
Save The Last Dance For Me, There Goes My Baby, Dance With Me, I Count the Tears, Some Kind of Wonderful, When My Little Girl Is Smiling, Mexican Divorce, Sweets for My Sweet. So many great songs!!
The Drifters! Classic. Gotta check out their 1962 hit "Up On The Roof." When you can also check out their songs "Some Kind of Wonderful," "There Goes My Baby," and "On Broadway."
Ben E King left the Drifters and went solo. He sang a number one hit called Stand By Me which was made into a great movie called Stand By Me. J you have to listen to the song and watch the movie.
The movie Stand By Me is an adaptation of a Stephen King book originally called The Body. The song was out before the book was written. Song and movie were two separate things neither having to do with the other except that production for the movie felt the song would be a good match maybe because of the name
I never met a song with the word Magic in it that I didn't like. This is one of my favorites. Also, you can't go wrong with The Drifters. How about Under The Boardwalk?
@Queen_Of_Cups Tep, I love all of those, especially the first one by ELO. Moon songs are great also. There's A Moon Out Tonight, Moon River, Fly Me To The Moon, Bad Moon Rising, Dancing In The Moonlight, Darkside Of The Moon. Moonlight Sonata. Yep, That's Amore.
I love the drifters!! I actually met them when they were performing at a club I was working at. Super nice, down to earth guys, loved getting to talk to them, true gentlemen, it was a great pleasure.
@Queen_Of_Cups I just named about 25 different groups and singers but accidentally exited out of this thread and lost everything I wrote. To make it simple, I liked everything from DooWop Pop bands, lots of the Motown Sound, Vocalists, Any music with great harmonies, Psychedelic Rock, Hard Rock, Country Rock, and after a long time, I eventually enjoyed listening to some Heavy Metall, some disco and soul. I liked the 80s new wave sound, alternative rock from the 90s to the mid-2000s. It's hard for me to name my top 10 Bands and Singers so I'll do my best... The Beatles, The Beachboys, The Four Seasons, The BeeGees, The Carpenters, The Eagles, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pink Floyd, Queen.ABBA, The Shirelles, The Supremes, Steve Miller Band, The Knack, The Cars, The Mamas and The Papas, The Rolling Stones. I know that's more than 10 but I'm missing some. Many of the songs I also like are from One Hit Wonders like Sugar Sugar by The Archies, It's Magic by Pilot, and many others from the 60s through the 80s... Supertramp is awesome too. I tried liking Rap for a brief time in the early 80s. I listened to RUN DMC. I thought of it as novelty music that would eventually wear off. I was sure wrong about that. Oh, I forgot some more 50s. The Skyliners, Dion and The Belmonts, The Mystics, The Passions, Little Anthony and The Imperials, The Schoolboys. I am missing out on a lot of names of groups from the 80s like Guns and Roses, Bon Jovi, , Aerosmith, The GoGos Pat Benetar, Blondie. Simple Minds, Toto, Tears for Fears, The Police,.The 90s, I liked a little bit of REM, I liked Oasis, Sugar Ray, all the way into the early 1000s with Greenday, some Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, and Maroon 5. Oh, I love that one song by Maroon 5, I won't Go Home Without You. It reminds me of the Smallville TV series, even though it wasn't played in the series that had some great rock, soft rock, punk, and alternative music in the series. That's enough for now. I am missing a whole lot.
That's one of my favorite Drifters songs. Another great one from when Be E King was with them is "There Goes My Baby". A great one from after he left is "Under the Boardwalk". A great King solo song is "Stand by Me".
Now you done it. The Drifters, so many great songs. "Save the Last Dance for Me", "Up on the Roof", "Under the Boardwalk", "Some Kind of Wonderful", all are must heard for you Jay.
The Drifters were not on Motown, they recorded for Atlantic in New York. Motown originated in Detroit. This is brilliant but it isn't the Motown sound of that period. Atlantic were experimenting with strings at this time.
Martin Sinfield thanks for the correction, I really didn’t know. And to be honest, it’s the first time I heard this song, but was very impressed by it.
@@dalebaker9109 Glad you liked it. This was a golden era for songs, groups and vocalists generally. You should check out the Atlantic catalogue around this time, so many fabulous artists and songs. The Drifters were at the peak of this label's output.
@@dalebaker9109 I think he posts a few tracks by artists from other labels on his Motown Mondays. I picked up on 'Be My Baby' by The Ronettes last week and added a comment as it isn't Motown. As long as people are hearing some of these songs for the first time, though, that's the important thing. I was lucky enough to grow up in that era and still have my collection of singles from that time. Pure gold.
Ben E. King's voice! This and "Stand By Me". I do believe Stephen King was inspired by the song to write the book, then the movie followed. A hit that became a standard. Pure gold. (And platinum!)
The Drifters are one of my favorite groups. The thing is, since their classic incarnations with Clyde McPhatter, Ben E. King, and Rudy Lewis, there have been some 20 other members rerecording the original tunes, so you need to make sure you are getting the vintage best!! There Goes My Baby is my favorite!
The Drifters were a great vocal band who had many great hits. Ben E King went off to pursue a solo career. Check out his "Supernatural Thing" and then if you dare listen to him singing "Keeping It To Myself" with the Average Whit Band" outstanding.
The Drifters have had more changes in their lineup than any other vocal group, but they still managed to have some of the greatest songs! They were managed poorly. (Their manager was the husband of Sarah Vaughan, one of the greatest jazz singers of all time. I was just crying over how beautiful her voice is a few hours ago. Check out her live performance of “Misty”!!) Anyway, Ben E. King was only with the Drifters for a couple of years. Those years and the early period when Clyde McPhatter was the lead were the best. Both Ben E. King & Clyde McPhatter also had major hits as solo artists. Incredibly talented dudes with golden voices!
One of their greatest lead singers was Rudy Lewis who recorded on many later hits ('Up On The Roof', 'On Broadway', 'Some Kind Of Wonderful'). The story goes that he was found dead with a needle in his arm on the morning they were due to record 'Under The Boardwalk'. The Drifters went ahead and recorded it that day with Johnny Moore on lead but that's why that happy song sounds so melancholy.
You must listen to ‘save the last dance for me.’ A classic that really showcases Ben E Kings voice. Means a lot to me as it takes me back to Christmas‘s of the 60’s and my Nanna’s great family parties. I was very young but it started my love of music and soul music in particular. Jay, I just love the way you react to the old music, like the doo-wop bands and the songs of the sixties, like The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Temptations, etc etc. It brings back my days of being in Middle School and loving this music. Especially the Supremes. They were my favorite group of the Motown sound. Keep up the good work. Nobody's doing these groups of all the reaction videos I have seen so far.

It wasn’t Ben E King and the Drifters, it was just the Drifters, and BEK was a lead singer on a few songs. There had been several lead singers of that group. The lead singer on the song by the Drifters, "Up on the Roof" was sung by Rudy Lewis, recorded in 1962.

My Uncle went to see The Drifters and they dragged him on stage. He ended up singing this with them. It was before mobile phones, but I do have a pic of my Uncle with Ben E King
JayveeTV , Northern Soul is huge here in the UK with so many tunes which were forgotten about from the States and then given the play time they deserved at all nighters that sprang uo across the uk in the 70s, if you get a chance try having a listen to these couple of tracks, i am sure you will be pleasantly surprised, (1) Al Kent , The Way You Been Acting lately, (2) Tommy Navarro, I Cried My Life Away. i could write an almost endless list of tracks but im sure those fellow soulies who might chance upon this comment will soon add more.
The Drifters were basically Clyde McPhatter's group. Lots of hits, and they lasted forever. The Wiki page lists members, and over the decades it looks like 60-70 Drifters without counting guests. "save the Last Dance for Me" and "Up On the Roof", "On Broadway" (covered by George Benson), "Under the Boardwalk" are some bigger hits.

Sweeter than wine softer than a summer night 🎻🎻👑👑👑
This is a beautiful song.
Up on the Roof, Under the Boardwalk are great ones also. Stand by my was made into the movie Stand by Me. Gorgeous voice such smooth harmonies. I never get tired of their songs!
Doc Pumus wrote this song as well Save The Last DANCE For me.....both incredible pop songs....
Oh, YES SIR!! Drifters are LEGENDARY!! LOTS to play from them
Reggae artist Leroy Gibbons did the cover version of This Magic Moment and he appeared as the dancehall singer in the movie 'Cocktail'.
An absolute belter of a tune from the Drifters,
My Uncle went to see The Drifters and they dragged him on stage. He ended up singing this with them. It was before mobile phones, but I do have a pic of my Uncle with Ben E King
Ben E. King. Spanish Harlem .. great tune!!!
So many fabulous Drifters songs to choose from, but Stand By Me, by Ben E King is my favourite of all.
One of my favorite classics. Check out under the boardwalk
Ben E King Stand by me🎶🎼🕊🎤❤
You have hit a gold mine. Do it all. Plus the ultimate Stand By Me!
You got to The Drifters J !!! yes!!!, Kissing In The Back Row, There Goes My First Love, Under The Boardwalk, Up On The Roof, More Than A Number In My Little Red Book, On Broadway...GO J
Wow, GREAT REASON to WATCH THE MOTOWN MONDAYS!! My Java, My J and Mr. JayV
Now there’s a song I could still dance to👍💕
