Came into your store a few weeks ago to get my first pair of skates in a very long time. You were amazing in the store with getting me into the right set of skates, probably the best customer experience I've ever had anywhere! Now that I've found your RUclips videos I've started watching a lot of them to help me get better in my skating, and let me tell you, you are like the Bob Ross of skating instructors. Very easy to follow, and awesome to listen to. Keep up the awesome work!
Ok, yesterday I was finally able to skate all day long after mooooonths of constant raining, and I remembered this tutorial. I must confess I don't really see the aesthetic appeal of this jumps, and I was actually a little scared of falling backwards... But after a few tries, forcing myself to exaggerate the posture like that, I found it not only practical but pretty fun too! And it got naturally Incorporated in my skating almost instantly, I found myself doing this heel pop over every little obstacle (and lines on the pavement 😅) all the way home. Pretty useful and fun, and I'm sure it's already helped me with balance, fear of jumping/falling, and general jumping technique. Later today I'll try to upload some footage from yesterday (I was also practicing the "stomping", but I'm commenting on that video about it). Thanks as always for your tutorials, you really have a gift for teaching 😊
one easy trick to not be bothered by cracks on the street or jumping onto sidewalks....lift your front leg and skate on your back leg. When your back skate catches and wants to grab, you will fall....onto your front leg. Then, lift your back foot and can continue skating. (also kudos to wearing your helmet for this video)
That's a great concept. I use a version of that a lot, not really lifting the front foot but only just leaning on the back leg (0-10% of my weight on the front). That makes my front leg bounce very effortlessly over any obstacle in the road, and then I can transfer my weight onto the front before my back foot hits the obstacle, making it easy also for the second leg to bounce off the crack/thing in the road. (I gotta admit, jumping on skates scares me the most because both skates are parallell, if one of them gets caught in something the other one is likely to do too = I'll probably fall.)
That's the way I initially got to lose the fear of jumping up curves and a few other easy obstacles. It's still my primary way of facing curves and stuff when just skating around
I'm revisiting inline skating after almost 20 years and having blast with it, not sure how it got away from me but will make sure this isn't going to happen again, so strange we stop doing the things we enjoy but it is what it is. I have never mastered lots of important skills but this time i'm doing it the right way so I love your videos mate keep them coming. Greetings from downunder.
Those slalom turns at the begining!! Niceeee! I really like the way you explain stuff smooth and clear. Though i don't need to learn these stuff your tutorials help me A LOT when helping and teaching my friends to skate. Keep it up!!
I know it's been a while since you uploaded this useful tutorial and it cmes to handy since I'm learning how to inline skate. Hope you are doing well. Thanks again!
Man... thank you very much for these tutorials and breakdowns, I'm an amateur skater so I'm beginning to slide and jump a little but this kind of content makes me learn fast. Namaste.
I love the way you break everything down. It really is the way I learn and try to learn from videos. Well and a lot of trial and error. Can't wait to see more on jumping. I have been practicing for a while now going to the skate park to jump on and off stuff. Just got 180 down but can't seem to get a full 360 yet. :(
Hey, Shoptask dude, take note of this interesting discovery about the heel pop. I found a speed ramp (the round variation of a speed bump with a wide crest), applied the heel pop on it and OH MY STARS AND GARTERS, the rush I got outta it was unlike anything I got from jumping! It's like entering an elevator going down/up and then sensing those g-forces acting on your body. It was soooo delightful, soooo scary and soooo nauseating (4 bumps in a row, i quit before the 5th). It's supercalifragilisticexpialidociously unlike jumping. ;) Jumping can't touch Heel pop.
Awesome stuff. I've been blading a long time now, but I've always felt quite awkward with small jumps.. in that a full arm swing just feels like a lot of effort for every small obstacle you come across. These pop type jumps, with minimal arm swing, look and feel far more casual. Thanks for breaking them down. =)
Wow just found you today, the footage on the street is amazing. I think you're one of the first tutorials I saw take it out of the skate park! Thank you!! :D
I absolutely love this technique and use it a lot now besides, i still not quite get right "pop" ^^ out of it. That's why i watched it again and realised how important every single step is and i did it kinda half hearted until now. Thank you a lot for showing this and a lot more in your great videos 🙏
Excellent tutorial. Great step-by-step demonstration and perfect tempo to really see and understand what you're demonstrating. Thanks. I will check out your other videos. Subscribed!
Today I went to skating in the morning and practiced heel pop I so useful, give me more confidence when landing thanks Shaun, nice xmovement and gazelle pure style.
Heel pops are an amazing tool. They are super practical and look awesome. Be sure to check out the follow up videos on Stomp landings, toe push and edge landings. ruclips.net/video/_6FIN82vM0Q/видео.html
Very efficient and energy sparing technique. I've found it somehow myself, but with that video I'll improve and get best of it :) Thank you, Shawn! I hope after the 4 parts of jumping videos, you'll break down some grabs too :)
Hi Shaun! The technique you are doing at 3:44 was taught to me in class (just last week, coincidence?), but I never caught the name of it (class was in French). We did little miniature heel pops like that and slalomed back and forth on them. You ever teach that technique? I'm looking for the name of it in english. :) EDIT: Q2: It's already very natural for me to lift my toes to float over little humps and bumps in the pavement, but whenever I try to put a hop into it, I feel like I'm going to fall flat on my back. Can you tell me a little about how you keep your weight distributed correctly for the landing and avoid falling backwards? Another awesome video. I know how much time and effort goes into making great content like this. Thanks!
Thanks, brother. Heel pop is nothing new to many skaters but a novice skater might not know this technique. The follow-up videos should be more useful.
Derek Simmons oh really? Interesting. I am learning how to jump. I thought it was supposed to be done from the balls of the feet since the ready position is supposed to be like that. I lose my balance sometimes when I increase my speed, because I seem to be pushing from the heels and the skates "roll forwards" when I take off, messing not only my jumping power but my balance too. How do you proceed? (Sorry for the explanations)
I didn't do a good job of explaining the reason you would use this technique. The heel pop is important for any urban skater. This technique allows you to easily pop off or over cracks, sticks or curbs in your path without sacrificing control. The beauty of this the heel pop is that you land with perfect control and are ready for the next obstacle.
Shop Task thanks. But I guess, not really an option for those who still have a heel brake attached... Can't wait to see the next parts. Thanks for your awesome job
I will give it a try/compare once I'm able to skate again. Could be I'm doing this without noticing ;) Also... shit first time ever had I chance to do the "first" post and dropped the ball..
They look amazing. Anything Adapt does is well designed, tested and manufactured. I 100% support everything that Adapt does. I would highly reccomend these skates.
I never thought of this as a technique until I observed my friend doing it. I made an effort to practise it and now I am hooked. I love skating on uneven sidewalks just so I can heel pop off the cracks.
nice tutorial. sometimes i do this heel pop but most of the time i rely on regular jumps or a 1 - 2 step ( 1st foot step followed by other foot ) yeah i know its a beginner's way of avoiding obstacles 😂
Why do we need "heel pop"? I just don't get it, I don't see any aspect that this jump is better than a tiny regular jump. It's kinda look better, but that's it?
Jump 1 : I don't see the point compared to the standard jump. Jamp 3: meh Jump 15: Weeeeeeeeeeee!!! PS: I have a heel break and no problem, so don't let this stop you, it's so fun!

Thank you so much for your support! "Bob Ross of skating instructors" - that is the greatest compliment I have ever received. Haha
Shop Task My man Shawn right there, one of the best human being I know on this earth ✌🏻
Right back at yeah!
AbstractCloud I wish I could say the same, but the problem is that I live in another country :'D
Just discovered Shawn today, this is like my 10th video of his I'm going through, and holy shit does this ring true
AAAAHHHHHH, that smooth little dance right at the beginning. Sooooooo sweet.
Ok, yesterday I was finally able to skate all day long after mooooonths of constant raining, and I remembered this tutorial. This is awesome! Thank you for sharing. The heel pop can make an ordinary skate into non stop fun.

You're really teaching people to become better in skating, so detailed, amazing work! Thank you!

Thank you, my friend.
Good job breaking down something many of us do instictively.
I love this guy! Such a great attitude, calm and positive with true love for rollerblading. Keep up good work my man!
I know it's been a while since you uploaded this useful tutorial and it cmes to handy since I'm learning how to inline skate. Hope you are doing well. Thanks again!

I've been doing it into grass. I will try it standing still thank you. I am thinking his next videos are going to help with my landings as well.
The toe push and lemon landing are very useful for 360s.

I've learnt it and tried thankyou for explaining so well , I am following all your videos .
Would you reccomend this with a heel brake attached?
Good question. Have you tried it with heel brake?
As a kid I had the break in just regular blades....... Now 20 years later I got into aggressive inline and no brakes at all
Awesome presentation. Will try this tomorrow on some uneven sidewalks. Looking forward to the next vid!
Have fun. When you time the heel pop with a small bump it is a great feeling.
I love all your videos tutorial so easy with steps thanks for this amazing and wonderful info i am getting better 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Excellent tutorial. Great step-by-step demonstration and perfect tempo to really see and understand what you're demonstrating. Thanks. I will check out your other videos. Subscribed!
Enrica Garroni, thank you. I appreciate the nice words.
You have great teaching style and very technical methodology. Thank you so much!
My pleasure.
Nice tutorial, thanks to you and your camera person. Never would have thought to jump like this, but liking it for style and discouraging toe jump.
Today I went to skating in the morning and practiced heel pop I so useful, give me more confidence when landing thanks Shaun, nice xmovement and gazelle pure style.
Fernando H J. that is great to hear. Keep practicing.
Great tutorial dude, I just started inline skating the other day and had a really good first session. I’m gonna give this a try today!
Always useful!
Thanks
@7:27 wow I want to learn that anyone know what the immediately following one foot 360 spin is called?
fantastic. Never heard of it. I always tend to step over small obstacles. Least chance to fall I always think. Love your vids
Stepping over obstacle is a great tool but it is better if you have options. Adding the heel pop to your tool box is worth the practise time.
I will surely start practicing it. thanks anyway!
Excellent, glad I watched it till the end, show how well it can be applied n how cool it looks compared to the traditional jumps
Heel pops are an amazing tool. They are super practical and look awesome. Be sure to check out the follow up videos on Stomp landings, toe push and edge landings.

Shop Task thanks Shaun, watched them all, will start practicing them, spreading your teaching in India, Namaste :)
That is amazing! Please share the love.
Very efficient and energy sparing technique.
I've found it somehow myself, but with that video I'll improve and get best of it :)
Thank you, Shawn!
I hope after the 4 parts of jumping videos, you'll break down some grabs too :)
Grabs! Great suggestion.
Does this apply equally to short wheel base skates, ie aggressive/ smaller wheels?
Gonna try your tips later today, thank you!!!
thanks for the video, yeah we like your way of teaching. i recently got into aggressive skating so im learning slowly there haha.
Great vid! Quick question: What's the point of hitting the object (hockey stick, branch, etc) as opposed to just clearing it without touching it?
It is really fun and with practice this technique will be safer than jumping.
Awesome tutorial, which will helps me a lot. Cheers!! Please more tutorials kind of wizard moves :)
How to left and right skating. Please you give we video.Thanks.
Hi. Can I do a heel pop with heel brakes installed?
Hi Shaun! The technique you are doing at 3:44 was taught to me in class (just last week, coincidence?), but I never caught the name of it (class was in French). Another awesome video. I know how much time and effort goes into making great content like this. Thanks!
I have taught slaloming in a similar manner. You can lift you toes side to side and bend and straighten you knees to start slaloming.
a bit basic for me but am sure you will get onto more interesting stuff soon. I appreciate your videos and enthusiasm.
Thanks, brother. Heel pop is nothing new to many skaters but a novice skater might not know this technique. The follow-up videos should be more useful.
What skates are you wearing, man?
Glad you are doing jumping videos but to be frank I don't see appeal of hill pop other than style. Is it better in anyway than "regular" light jump ?
Derek Simmons oh really? Interesting. I am learning how to jump. I thought it was supposed to be done from the balls of the feet since the ready position is supposed to be like that. Can we do this jump by using thing thats hieght is more than a hockey stick
Sure, if you watch the whole thing you'll see Shaun popping bumps and kerbs etc
I like your videos
👌🤘
Congratulations from Brazil in 2019.....🇧🇷🎅🙏
How do you make your rollerblades more comfortable after buying a new pair?? 🤔 would thick crew socks help?
Ps. Great video 👍🏼
I prefer a thin sock that will not bunch up.
wow really good viedo! What do you think about the new adapt hyperskate Zero nobuck 2017?
I think they look beautiful.
They look amazing. Anything Adapt does is well designed, tested and manufactured. I 100% support everything that Adapt does. I would highly reccomend these skates.
Awesome stuff, need to get this right..
Amazing 😍
Where is this rink? I need a place like this for my kid.
Glen Meadows Community rink.
can you do this with a brake on?
I can do it with my brake although I am considering to take it off so it won't get in the way
is it better to have your feet parallel or if one is slightly infront of the other?
Parallel. Lock 'em boots together for double the power.
alrighty, will try out when i get the chance to skate again
Its funny how I've been doing this for years without actually knowing what it was called. Great tip for getting around rough terrain.
I never thought of this as a technique until I observed my friend doing it. I made an effort to practise it and now I am hooked. I love skating on uneven sidewalks just so I can heel pop off the cracks.
7:25 What friction?
Nice nice thank you so Much
nice tutorial. sometimes i do this heel pop but most of the time i rely on regular jumps or a 1 - 2 step ( 1st foot step followed by other foot )
yeah i know its a beginner's way of avoiding obstacles 😂
Both methods are good. I like a quick pop because I stay is good position for anything else that might be in my way.
why my skate wheels is 80mm at the center and at the back and front is 76mm ? im confused.
7:26 siiick move!!
hi sir .. can you teach us how to jump backwards .. 🔥🔥🔥😁😁😁
Love it
How old are you ?
trés bon verry good yes
The heel pop: Taking a rollerblader's worst enemies (cracks, holes) and flipping 'em on their heads to become street assets.
Yes!!!! Exactly. Well said.
Acista blades filmed there in 2019 woweeeeeEEe
Why do we need "heel pop"? I just don't get it, I don't see any aspect that this jump is better than a tiny regular jump. It's kinda look better, but that's it?
indeed. I'm reading all the comments to see if I find out why. Plus, isn't it kind of dangerous? Like the last wheel may sometimes hit the curb.
Good👍👏
Jump 1 : I don't see the point compared to the standard jump.
Jamp 3: meh
Jump 15: Weeeeeeeeeeee!!!
PS: I have a heel break and no problem, so don't let this stop you, it's so fun!
Heel pop looks so damn scary…. Was always taught and had a gut feeling myself to NEVER fall on your back, and this one looks very risky.
Hey Bro Help me?
Why do we have to use heel pop
❤️❤️❤️
Reminds me of a Chinese Ollie.
Very similar. Great insight.
"Shaunhereshoptaskuaiuaicee"
And you already kno' who it eez.
#LifeIsGood
You got the sequencing wrong, it's the heel pop, the ass smash, the ground roll and the whimper.
Dang! I forgot about the ass smash.
and it's so basic!...
I'm the 1000 like n.n
When I'll try this shit I'm going to fall to the back so fucking hard. Oooooookaaayyy.
😊
You are too much brother
They seem so heavy to me smh
The video could have been 4 minutes 30 seconds shorter and still got the point across
So.. thumbs down??
