- "Yma o Hyd" is a Welsh language patriotic song commonly sung at Welsh football matches. It describes the everlasting struggle of the survival of the Welsh people, language and culture. It has also been seen as a cultural anthem of the Welsh people, as well as "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau."
Thanks to my good friend Evan for showing me this song!
Apologies for any translations that may be incorrect,
Audio in question is "Yma o Hyd - Dafydd Iwan"
This makes pawb feel very phopeth
This makes everything (paωb) feel like everyone (phopeth)
Also, I'm intrigued. could anyone please explain why the Greek letter omega "ω" is used in place of "w"?
"This makes *paωb* feel very phopeth"
instead of
"This makes *pawb* feel very phopeth"
@@icygeometry It's not, it's just the font. (It's supposed to look Celtic)
@@Connor_JR I tried finding it from my attempts of online searching; I tried and tried, and it always returns with nothing like you implied! The Ws all sharp and pointy, be it old manuscripts (they are in older on to modern friggin' Welsh language fonts. which artfully bothered to transform Welsh letters DD and LL: lowercase "dd" with the top pointy bits kissing each other, and one of the Ls on sat on another's lap (just look up Cymru Wales Serif or Cymru Wales Transport); but for W, fuck all, it's still W. The historical Welsh letters I get online are ỽ for V, U and W and ỻ for LL, goddamnit. Do you have any other ideas?
@@icygeometry I'm Welsh...
@@Connor_JR Oh that's cool, dang sorry for the trouble caused. So, had you seen the rounded Ws before yourself? If so, I think that might imply the Welsh traditional typeface staying true to the letter name "double U".
This song goes to show that no matter what happens in the world (e.g. Industrial Revolution, First / Second World War, COVID-19, etc.)
Wales and the Welsh Language are still there, and will live on!
Bendigedig!
This is by far the best rendition of the song I've ever heard. Welsh is one hell of a language.
Una delle più antiche, nobili e belle del mondo... In musica diventa fantastica....
It is worth noting that the english found it easier to conquer India, half way across the world than to conquer Wales, next door. Just sayin.
Where did you get those facts from? England have nothing to profit from invading a load of soggy fields and stroppy celts
Cwych❤
Because although the Saxons imposed their language, the Britons remained, England is not the lost lands, just English speaking Britons
I agree. They are still here, . I'm 96 per cent Welshman 🏴
@@albertmutton1687No. English are AngloSaxons. They're Germanic people. Closely related to Germans, Dutch, Swedes etc.
Meanwhile Welsh, Scots and Irish are Celts.
I’m English but just want to say I wish England had an anthem such as this 👍 the passion that goes into every rendition is magical and the Welsh should be congratulated each time 👍
It's just a national song. Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau is the anthem.
Hir oes Cymru! Rydyn ni dal yma! 🏴🏴🏴

Though I am not of Welsh ancestry, I respect the hell out of the people of Gymraeg.
Cymraeg is the name of the language(idk whether it is used as the name of the nationality). The name of the country is Cymru. Gymraeg is the soft mutated form. I guess you heard it from iaith Gymraeg which means Welsh language where iaith is feminine so the Cymraeg is softened to Gymraeg. I am not of Welsh ancestry too, and speak a bit of Welsh, still respect the hell out of genedl Gymru.
@@toonatr356 my apologies Gaelic from Ireland and Scotland was my more stronger suit. Glad you mentioned that. That would be more useful tip for next time I meet a welsh American buddy of mine.

*Thank you. May peace be with you.*
@@DexterPlayz_Productions May peace be with you too, unfortunately my Welsh is not as advanced as that. I hope I will come to that level.
Puts the hairs on my neck stand up, just tremendous
Did a DNA test and found out I'm part welsh. Trying to learn the language and bring myself a bit closer to my roots and this song makes me damn proud.
May you bless by King Arthur! Continue learning Cymraeg, I'm learning it too! And when you done Welsh you can learn Breton and Cornish, they are Britons too
@-._A2._- Diolch! And good luck to you, it's got it's own challenges I've never seen in other languages, it's kinda fun!

Last name Williams here.... Dad named Earl.... Our first Williams landed in Newcastle Delaware.. named Richard.....in the late 1800's.... My son did 23 and Me......zero native American.... I feel I don't belong here😬
I have a real family.... But it's not American... I don't belong here.... I was born in the wrong place....not my choice.... I'd like to find my real blood
Should sing this in six nation
What did they do to Ynys Mon 😭 got deleted
I'm intrigued, could you or anyone please explain why the Greek letter omega "ω" is used in place of "w"? They're already so unrelated from each other; "ω" in its lowercase form, was originally two omicrons “oo” written together in Greek in the other end of Europe; the usage of "w" emerged separately from Latin "VV" or "uu" in the 7th or 8th centuries that later combined for the West Germanic languages and in turn the English language alongside Welsh due to both of them being in Great Britain.
The Greek letter omega (ω) is not typically used in place of "w." If it appears so, it's usually due to typographic errors, visual similarity, or stylistic choices. Historically, "w" originated from the doubling of "u" or "v" in medieval Latin to represent the /w/ sound, while omega represents a long "o" sound in Greek and has no relation to "w." Any substitution is likely a mistake or artistic choice, not a linguistic standard.
@@alynwillams4297 I'm glad for the neat and much better explanation than I did. It was hard for me to pinpoint the usage of the rounded W in Welsh online, in which I found nothing in the end.

I love Wales ! I stand with the Donbass and Palestine who will also sing the same soon.❤
i love wales but palestine is a sensitive issue and the donbas does not add to wales struggle beacause of the donbas russia invaded ukraine so remember that
@@tomsloan5743 What is the sensitive issue you mention ? Russian SMO was by invitation or rather a plea for help from the people in Donbas who voted to leave Ukraine. They were being persecuted and cleansed by the Ukrainians since 2014. The song brings hope for many who are fighting the good fight .
@@tomsloan5743 It's a waste of time to engage directly with 'Liz'. The chances are it's a Russian troll. There is actually a small chance it's one of these extremely easily manipulated and gullible people who openly support one of the most authoritarian, imperialist, expansionist, extreme right wing dictators just because he's anti-Western but it's not worth engaging with them either because the lack of background knowledge they have is beyond the scope of a RUclips comment section.
