- In today’s video I’m going to teach you how to sing the first verse and chorus of ‘Yma o hyd’. A lovely Welsh folk song by Dafydd Iwan which has become a very popular song to be sung by Welsh football fans at the Wales games and at the World Cup.

This song is why I want to learn Welsh.
Diolch yn fawr for taking the time to teach. Much appreciated from a new subscriber.
I am English but see myself as coming from Yorkshire first I have great respect for wales for keeping their culture alive this long
Exactly the same with me mush
Don’t forget my Yorkshire pal - Elmet was a Welsh-speaking nation as part of Hen Ogledd! We are all Welsh really!
Yorkshire - not English ? What planet are you from?
Just know that you've such an impact, I'm seventeen years old and from Germany. I absolutely appreciate the Welsh language and already learned another song. Thanks for your educating video!
I love the sound of Welsh, it's so melodic! 'Yma o hyd' has the same effect on me as 'Flower of Scotland', both anthems that gie ye major goosebumps! (And Dylan Thomas is the greatest poet ever!) Awrabest frae Scotland!!🏴✊🏴✊xx
great video
I love it,and being English myself, I love the fierce pride and passion in it.Indeed,I think of it when I'm having a bad day, or I'm on the receiving end from the bad guys. It keeps me going. I always like to think of us as firm friends forever.
If you ever do another Welsh song you should teach how to sing Myfanwy! (Totally not because i'm still having trouble with the pronunciation of certain lines lol...)
Love your videos im From N. Ireland but my two older children live in Cardiff bay.
Thank you
Take care of yourself, Jason!! don't push your voice on our account. and cheer softly today as Wales DEFEATS England!!
Diolch! I’m ok thanks but it is going to be hard to not cheer loudly every time we score a goal.🤞

You motivated me to learn Welsh!
Thats great to hear.
I'd never noticed the mutation of phopeth until you mentioned. Hope you're doing well and on the mend. Great to see this just before the game against England later. Hopefully we smash them :)
Thank you, boyo. I love you. Men of Harlech in Welsh would be great, too.
That’s a great idea! 👍
Thank you this is very helpful.
Wanting to learn this song a while back (last year or before?) is how I first got onto your videos through the RUclips algorithm, so it's great to see you getting into it a bit in teaching here! It's a beautiful song with great lyrics and a great message and spirit behind it, and I love that it's known and used as widely as it is in Wales these days! Diolch yn fawr for this! :)
waiting for match that starts in around an hour can't wait! Cymru am byth ❤️❤️
Cymru am byth!!! 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Diolch yn fawr Jason! Myfanwy and Men of Harlech next please if you have time, get well soon!!!
I can't get that song out of my head, despite the fact that I don't speak Welsh in fact I speak Spanish, Salvadoran(El Salvador )Spanish.
Thank you so much, I tried to sing this for our team but only by singing the chorus how I thought that it was being sung. I think that everyone would be thankful that they couldn't hear it, xx
💚
It's fitting that we're called the land of song because it has been through music - specifically our anthem and hymns - that I've been learning welsh and found it easier and motivating that way. I'm not fluent enough to have a conversation with other pobl, but I'll get their soon enough. Cymreag is not exactly an easy language but it's not the hardest either. It's somewhere in that mid range of difficulty which keeps interest going. (Just try Russian. Cor blimey, now THAT'S a hard language!)
@alta8029 It's worth learning it fluently. Especially to right the wrongs of the past by those who tried to wipe it out.
Not all heroes wear capes. Da iawn brawd! Bendigedeg!
😊
this is how it is written in the Spanish writing form:
-Doit Tim an cobio macsen
-doix neeb an ai nabod o
-mai mil a jue jat o flanazoiz
-an anser ri jir ir cor
-Pan aiz Magnus Maximus o ganrri
-an o bloiden tri-jantiguen-oiz-tri
-aan gadail an kenet-eul katban a jeddiul güele ni
-roini anma o jid
-er cueiza paub a fobpez
-roini anma o jid
👍
Here in Radnorshire, the community has chosen “Hei Mistar Urdd” as the unofficial anthem. Weird.
Want to sing Calon Lan
Get well soon mate!
Diolch/Thanks
I'm English born, with Welsh ancestry on my mothers side. I'm 67 but just started Welsh for beginners even though I live in Spain and my Spanish is crap. Doesn't make any sense does it!?
I always thought "Delilah" was our 2nd anthem
Heh, I am American by many generations. But It is weird how much I look like a welshman. It aches this lost connection.
Well, learned to sing Yma o hyd rather naturally as I am not English. Neither ll nor ch is not at all anything hard to pronounce for me.
