    I've been listening to this song at lesat twice a day for over a year now. I know the song is about the Welsh Language and that they kept the language even though Brittan tried to get rid of it. HOWEVER, as a person who has drug-resistant depression (No Medications have worked for me), this song is INCREDIBLE. With Depression, sometimes when you wake up in the morning all you can say is "I'm Still Alive...". This song almost "Gives you permission" to feel that way. To be proud of the fact we made it another day, and we're still here. And the part about being surrounded by Darkness but ready to see the dawn".
    I cannot express what this song has meant to me. I CAN say that he's just released his autobiography in English and it is INCREDIBLE. His live could EASILY be made into a movie (Including someone trying to get him tied up in a plan to "Unalive" the Prince many years ago. I won't say what happened, but what an INCREDIBLE man, story, and song!
    I don't know what to say other than this song has literally kept me going!

      I'm Welsh, and I'll try and explain why this is so special and why Dafydd Iwan is crying. If you watch the Copa90 video- The Welsh Football Revolution, it explains more about the rise in national pride and football and the Welsh language, and why it's so surprising.
      Two things caused the decline in the Welsh language- mass migration from England during the industrial revolution and a efforts by the government to stamp it out- which led to a like 'internalised hatred' from Welsh people towards their own language. And also laws that banned if from being spoken in workplace, court etc.
      The language loss caused a split in Wales and Welsh was only really spoken in the North West and West coast. And it became synonymous with nationalism- which was really hated in Wales. The south was more unionist.
      Dafydd Iwan is a Welsh nationalist folk singer, probably the most 'uncool' thing you could be in Wales.
      In football, like the Copa90 video shows, the Welsh language was really looked down on in Cardiff and the south. Many people in the south hated North Wales Welsh speakers as much as the English.
      When I was young, there was no pride in the language at all and was seen as backwards and embarrassing. People would have mocked you for liking Dafydd Iwan.
      So to see football fans from across Wales (10-20 years ago would have had nothing in common, and maybe would have hated and fighting each other) sing a Welsh nationalist folk song, is nothing short of a miracle. And it's prompted Welsh people to want to learn Welsh so they can sing along in Welsh.
      There is still a sort of trauma in Wales, particularly in the older generation from the Welsh language loss, and an internalised shame over speaking it. So to see the younger generation embrace their language is beautiful! I
      And 'rugby Welshness' is still very unionist, with the Royals and all that. The nationalism that has spawned from football is new, organic and forward thinking. The football team has been pushing for it to be called 'Cymru' rather than 'Wales'. And it's helped the movement in Wales to 'un-Anglicise' ourselves. I.e changing place names back to the original Welsh names. Un-Anglcise our surnames (the reason why so many Jones, Williams, Davies in Wales is because England changed our surnames from the original Welsh names Dafydd= Davies etc)
      This is why he's crying. It's a mix of disbelief, and also pride to see Wales finally embrace the language, without any negative connotations or embarrassment. And it's united the north and south.
      Hope that makes sense.

      @@paperflowers-ks6vv Thank you. That is a great explanation. As an Irishwoman who loves our own native language, Gaeilge, I also love healthy, life affirming Welsh and Scottish nationalism.

      @@christinequinn5355 Oh thanks! I know it's a bit of an essay, but I wanted to provide some context for the crying. I think a lot of us in Wales have been very surprised by the effect the Cymru football team has had on the Welsh psyche!
      It's probably a sense of vindication too- he went to jail for his Welsh language protests. People like him were seen as 'crackpots' in the past. Now nationalism is taken a lot more seriously by the younger generation.
      To see younger people embrace the song (he's in his 80s!) and sing in Welsh- many of them can't speak Welsh and singing phonetically, is probably something he never thought he would see.

      @cigh7445 Год назад

      @@ynyrglyn5037 Statistics show that despite census numbers showing more 'speakers' of Welsh, the Welsh speaking heartlands are still shrinking and becoming anglicised, partly due to inmigration of monolingual English speaking settlers, emigration from the areas, housing issues, etc.
      Furthermore, studies show that the second language learners of Welsh, those from English speaking families sent to Welsh speaking schools, tend not to use Welsh as much after leaving school, socialise in English, have English speaking partners and raise their children as English speakers.
      Stop patting yourselves on the back over meaningless census results and start doing something to protect the density of your native speaking population from anglicisation, or you'll end up like Ireland today (Ireland in 1919, like Wales in 1970, had 20% of it's population as native Irish speakers and attempted a school-based revival in the English speaking part. They ended up with zero new Irish speaking areas despite 55% of their schools having been Irish Medium in the 1940s and now less than 1% of their population are native Irish speakers).
      Don't think that Welsh Medium schools can do all the work, they can't. You need your native speakers and the geographic Welsh speaking areas. Otherwise you'll end up with a pathetically English sounding Welsh creole, with English tongues butchering Welsh words and very little thought given to decent phonetic instruction in the rush to create more 'speakers'. In Ireland even most teachers don't know the languages phonetics. It's a shitshow.

    as an englishman, with absolutely zero "patriotism" for "my" country, THIS is what patriotism should be about, not some bullshit about a rich, posh woman who is the figurehead of our country based off NO good reason whatsoever.
    Our national anthem should be jersualem, something about our green and pleasent lands. i've always liked the welsh national anthem actually, but this is even better. seeing him cry whilst singing was really emotional.

    • @philldavies7940
      @philldavies7940 2 года назад +15

      Yeh, the English national anthem is quite a weary dirge, all about God protecting a single person, the Queen (or King), nothing about about the land, the people, their achievements, their history, their aspirations. As you note there are far better songs that represent the English people, Jerusalem, Land of Hope of and Glory, I vow to thee my country, all would make better anthems.

      The Welsh were one of the people of this islands along with us Scots, however the English were also the first on these Islands, Just because the Saxons and Angles showed up it didn't change the English too much. There is a dna study about how the Scots, English and Welsh are still the same people who are from these islands from 12000 years ago. There is a myth about the English Anglo saxons, they only changed the dna about 10% to the native English

      @@overthewebb the Scots came from Ireland, the name comes from Scotti, the Latin name for the Irish, the Picts and the kingdoms of the hen ogledd (the old north) were Brythonic, Welsh is the Anglo Saxon name for Brythonic people.
      Sure most of the island has Welsh DNA but culturally Wales are the ones who speak a Brythonic language like the people in modern day England and Scotland did over a thousand years ago, even if we all have Brythonic DNA, Wales is Culturally and linguistically Brythonic, in that way they are the true Britons, Unlike the scotti ish or angle ish.

      @@Aron-ru5zk Ok, this is my thrid post due to getting deleted, due to posting links. You say Brythonic a lot, like this is some kind of reality. Are you suggesting that only the Welsh were native to the UK? That's nonsense. Brythonic includes Scotland which you missed out. Scots were in the UK before the movement of the Irish across the sea, as you mentioned the Picts. Scots Welsh, English and Irish we all come from the same DNA who moved here 12000 years ago. I posted a dna science link to back up my claims before, however it was deleted due to it. So I won't post it again

      the rest all call themselves German or Irish and speak a Gaelic or Germanic language even if their DNA is Brythonic.

    This song is my favourite song. I am English and born in Cheshire. I always been bullied when I was younger by everyone and I feel like I never belong here. I am Half English, Quarter Welsh and Quarter Irish. I decided to abandon my English side and move towards my welsh side. I have two very close Welsh friends who knows I hate england and want to be Welsh but they will always call me english and never consider me welsh because I was born in England. I have another Welsh friend who is very quickly becoming my best friend he is the only one showing me support. He told me "shrugs does it matter what other people consider you as? At the end of the day you're making more effort to learn about Welsh culture/history/language than most Welsh people. Just consider yourself Welsh and let other people consider you British". This Song make all my hairs stick up all over my body, This Song make me tear up, and This Song makes me feel pride. This song is the soul inspiration why I want to become Welsh and will not stop until I am Welsh. I am a 26 year old autistic man and I apologise if I sound childish. I just wish to become Welsh and wish people understand. I wish I had support.
