If you are here then there's a good change you are stuck trying to get the front cover out of the vehicle and looking for answers. The engine needs to be a very specific height and the not leaning back towards the firewall. I found the best height just slightly above where it sits with the engine mount installed. Then if you pry between the frame and water pump, it will give you just enough clearance. Also you do not need to remove the oil pan, just the few bolts.

Thank you brother.....been f****** around with the damn engine front cover for over 2hrs now! GEEEEEEZZZZZ. It also helps if you jack the engine up near the transmission and not the crankshaft sprocket end. This helps the engine move easier when prying on the water pump and frame. Hope this little git of info helps someone out. And thank you Josh, as soon as I read this post I had it out in damn minutes.

Do you have a video showing how to replace all of the silicon and then put the cover back on? Do any of the pulleys have the be in a certain position when you replace them (obviously the crank shaft pulley but what about the others)?

It would be awesome if you would list the links to all the other videos on your channel with the other steps to the process leading up to here. There are so many videos on your channel (a wonderful thing!) that it's hard to find the right ones. Thanks for posting all these. They've been a terrific help. 😊

You left out the best and most important part......the actual removal of the cover. As you know its a VERY tight fit and it is miserable to get out or back in.

Can you please explain how you got the cover out. It obviously took you some effort as it is edited out of the video. I'm finding it impossible to remove as there is not enough room by about a 1/4".
It is stuck on the crank shaft key pin.
And the timing marks piece that sticks out beside the crank pulley is in the way, too.

I’m having issues getting it reinstalled. I tried once and got silicone all over everything. I’ve tried multiple dry runs and can’t seem to get it without hitting a lot of things. Pull the water pump? Or the engine??

Looks like he was easily moving the engine around earlier so I'm guessing he just wiggled the engine around until he was able to pull it out.

Two things. Im working on a 2012 Elantra 1.8. The water pump pulley is a mofo to get off the pump, after the bolts are removed! Also, the cover is a major pain to remove. You will need to jack and raise the motor to get it out. Getting it back in with sealant on it is almost impossible. Just an FYI.

How high did you have to raise the passenger side in order to slide out the timing cover? I'm having the same issue trying to slide out the timing cover on a 2013 elantra. The crankshaft and a small "jut out" on the timing cover itself keeps getting in the way. I'm also wondering if anyone has tried removing the water pump to make removing the timing cover easier. I'd rather not drain the coolant if removing the pump doesn't help.

@@offroad9550 Dude I can't remember now. I jacked it up quite a bit though. I just remember it being a big PIA to get off and on. But it does come out. I want to say I put a little tension on the end to move it toward the drivers side, just to get an extra 1/8th inch clearance. Good luck.

There are usually 4 bolts holding the timing cover from the oil pan. You might be able to see the holes as he removes the oil pan.

If its there than 20 nut bolts to be removed and torqued. Draw the line folks, work extra hours on your job or do side gig. Make more money and put shoe box, cos this job cost $$$$ to pay your trusted mechanic You keep a clean hands to enjoy a slimy hamburger afterwards
