What a great video. I have a 2.5l SOHC in my 84 Westy and have been slowly figuring out (but not yet able to fix) the ticking noise. Might just give this a shot. By the way, the Subaru Forester manual recomends 10w-50, 20w-40, or 20w-50 for towing or driving in severe conditions, which is how i know its safe to run.

Good luck with yours! I was confident running this oil because a friend of mine who works at a westfalia repair shop recommended it. Good to know the manual says that too!

I have an 84 with an ej22 that had both of those same noises. Lifters and same Kennedy heat shield. I ended up putting a 2” bend across the bottom (towards the muffler) which help add rigidity and clearance! Good luck!

Hello, regarding the noise of the ej22 engine, what kind of oil to fill in so that the noise disappears, I don’t understand English and I write through a translator.

I have a 97’ Impreza outback sport with the ej22. It’s been pretty solid but as of this winter it started with the tick. I’ve always run 10w30 and to be honest when the engine warms up it quiets down a bit. Just curious about that.
I’ll try using an oil with zinc next time, someone said it helps with the lifters sticking.

I used this oil because my friend recommended it and he works with these motors all the time! Seems like they don’t like sitting for too long

What state is that it looks beautiful there. Also what was the deal with the tick? Cleared up after running the motor for a while? I assume it was an older motor?

Southern California right outside of San Diego! It is an older motor and it just needed to warm up because the lifters get stuck I believe. Never really understood the full reason but it just needed to be run

how are you running your coolant system without the top coolant crossover pipe under the intake manifold and a top rad hose?
that intake pipe near the throttle body looks pretty restrictive also.
and if you used an aftermarket timing belt tensioner and it's the newer style design they are all junk and they will leak and rattle and not hold tension. you're better off just using the older timing tensioner style, they rarely fail.
if you still suspect it's the hydraulic lifters add a quart of automatic transmission fluid to the oil and let it idle. to help bleed the lifters you need to hold rpms around 3k and they will bleed the air out, but I wouldnt reccomend doing that until you get the coolant system hooked up.

I’ll have to show it in more detail but there is the crossover coolant pipe under the intake manifold and mine has been modified with the top rad hose routed to the back of the motor. I appreciate the advice though I’ll have to try that when I get it running again!

The second noise was a timing tensioner, bad tensioner sounds like a rumbling fart in a couch

Did you do away with your '77 in favor of the Vanagon? Are you on The Samba? I appreciate your videos, Dimitri.

Yeah I did! The 77 needed too much metal work for an amateur like me and when I found this 82 I traded up. Not on the samba yet but I will be soon enough. I appreciate it though that means a lot🤙🏻

Which hydraulic lifters were making the ticking noise? How did you fix the ticking noise?

Ended up getting better after running the engine a bit and warming things up

I git with the 5w30 it asks for if it's colder months like winter then I'd do 10w30 cause I live up in the north where it gets that cold but still 5w30 guys trust the engineers a little.

It’s 100% those rollers I had the same thing with my Subaru EJ 25 and did the whole timing belt job I try to cut corners and use one sheet AutoZone bearing and within a week. It already busted for some reason Subarus only like Subaru parts you might be able to get away with a few different stuff aftermarket, but most of the time they throw fits.

20W-50 might be too heavy for it. I'd stick with the 10W-30. That's what I use in my 02 2.5L 88 auto GL.

goes away on its own! change your oil using a high zinc oil to fix the sticking. drive around and it should go away.
