This is almost poetic 🥹 I remember vividly watching your long 06 review (as well as ClementJ456's review series, what a throwback!) as a kid nearly ten years ago and being intrigued by "the game universally panned" that was just out of my reach as a young Sonic fan. Following the progress and stories of the PC remasters/remakes of 06 over the last half a decade has been a crazy journey, and watching this spotlight feels like a full circle moment. I can't wait to see this project finish - it's bound to be the among the best fan projects to come out of the video game community at this rate 🔥
This is absolutely spectacular. You're original Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) video is one of my favorites of your content and I remember watching that so much when I was younger (and I still do to this day). I remember being obsessed with the game despite its infamy and wanting to see if it could be improved. Lo and behold, I discovered Sonic Project '06. All the updates, from the character movesets, the speed, the controls, the visuals, the bug/glitches fixes, the added bonuses such as the intro cutscenes for the levels now. I am so happy that Sonic '06 is finally getting the praise, recognition, and redemption that it deserved ever since its time constrained development that ultimately doomed the product when it first lauched way back in 2006. I think I'm gonna wait until the full game is finished because something like this I would rather prefer to take its glory all in one setting. Keep up the good work ChaosX and team. You've made a miracle.
Silver was already a dork _in_ 06. He gets to the past and all he can do is talk about how pretty everything is. Even deserts! It wasn't the most predominant part of his character, but it was there, and his dorky voice helped.
Playing Shadow alone is absolutely worth getting the game. Project-06 actually captures the feeling of Shadow really being this unstoppable, Ultimate being. You feel so insanely powerful, how quickly he just snaps from enemy to enemy, and how after hitting them he does that slow flip just to show off feels just right. Project-06 gives us a Shadow we can truly feel like he is the Ultimate Life Form. Play it for him. Sonic and Silver play great too, but Shadow really is something amazing.
Not covered in this video: Shadow and Silver have their own hidden upgrades in the fashion of Sonic's gems, if you enjoyed the last cutscene of Shadow's story, you may enjoy what his upgrade has to offer.
P-06 is genuinely my favorite 3D Sonic game and it’s even possible it surpasses even my favorite 2D games being Mania and 3&k. It’s about as close as we will ever get to what I would imagine a Sonic Adventure 3 would be like, the controls are perfect, the graphics are PHENOMENAL, the added details make me feel like a kid again, the upgraded characters all feel amazing, etc. Its all just perfection for me.
Yesss, I've been waiting for Johnny to check this newest version of P-06 out! Love the spotlight, and this makes the game legit look fun to play now. Not perfect, but the difference is night and day!
We finally got to see a perfected version of Sonic 06. I always knew that game’s reception would be positive had it been properly finished. Thank you for taking the time to improve upon this game ChaosX.
From description and issues with Silver, I feel like best authors of project could make - is to add ability for him to gain height (not much) similar to ACs in Armored Core 6 - where as you hold jump button mid-air, assuming you still have energy, you will begin ascending - but the more you ascend, the more power is used. This could eliviate issue with overshooting drastically, provided you're not launching yourself without power as Silver. I also think it would be good change to Silver's gameplay.
Love the cozy vibes on this one. Omega looks so damn awesome, reminds me of his portrayal in the comics. Considering what Sonic Team showed today with the final DLC for Frontiers, what you said at the end about what makes a great Sonic game, I think there is hope.
Shadow Chaos Blasting that hallway of Badniks was oddly satisfying, being a survivor of his eponymous game and at one point attempting to 100% it for some reason.
My review of this game: It's very satisfying My favorite thing about Shadow is chaining together carefully placed homing attacks and spears on enemies to stay in the air as long as possible across different rooms in the stage, just to get that "PERFECT" score. So satisfying. My favorite thing about Silver is speed running the stages with perfectly timed ESP mode activations and teleport dashes. Grabbing enemies and simply releasing them again will crush them to bits. So satisfying. My favorite thing about Sonic is dashing through enemies with the bounce attack and homing attack. The bounce attack gives you a homing attack refill, meaning you can descend to the ground super fast, then dash forward to keep your momentum going. So satisfying.
I can imagine some madlad doing a Sonic World thing with Project06 and adding a fully functional Chao Garden and everything needed for it to be connected with the main game. Making 06 the true Sonic Adventure 3 it was always meant to be.
Great video! A couple of weeks ago, I finally got to play Sonic '06 for the first time. It was quite the experience and yes it's true what everyone was saying that the game was bad, but had the potential to be good. I really did enjoy the amazing soundtrack from Sonic '06. I'm definitely looking forward to try Project '06 because I've heard very good things about it.
You know, the funny thing is this version of Silver would be a perfect protagonist replacement for in the frontiers game. Honestly, the plot and exploration and puzzles in frontiers would fit Silver's character and play style a lot better. Project for later possibly...
If I were SEGA, I'd be looking at this and I think "oh we need to hire this guy and give him the funds and team to finish this and give it an official release". That may never happen but who knows, a guy can dream. But here's my question: if you could rename Sonic 06 and give it a proper subtitle, what would it be? I'd go with something like 'Sonic: The Flames of Disaster'.
Project 06 redeems the rushed and broken mess we got back in 2006 by giving it the time that it needed. Even if more time wouldn't have fully fixed the story of Sonic 06, the devs really tried to be make Adventure 3 everyone wanted, but completely failed to reach due to a cut team and not having nearly enough time to cook, which lead to a completely broken mess. Thankfully, P-06 does everything to help improve the gameplay to what it always should have been.
Even if the original game was finished I honestly doubt it would be anywhere near as good as p 06 it was 2006 and the technology wasn’t as good and it was on Xbox 360
28:33 the frame rate drops so heavily, because there is something wrong with the reflections and the volumetric lights. Putting the reflections off and the volumetric lights to medium or lower will eliminate the lag.
If you could have told any Sonic fan that Sonic 06 would one day have a version that some would call the best way to play 3D Sonic, no one would believe you. This project is amazing. It’s amazing to see what people can do when you give them tools and leave them to their own devices. 06 was always a childhood guilty pleasure so I LOVE this game
“People like me for my sonic content.” - Johnny No, people like you for that gorgeous face and that sexy voice. The sonic content is just the cherry on top.
Perfect timing, just tried this out a couple days ago! Really good! There are a couple little things I am not fond of, or maybe not used to, but its simply amazing! Sonic 06 was my first Sonic game, which might be why I never hated it, but MAN do I wish it released in a similar state of quality like how P-06 is.
Meanwhile, people have no doubt given up on X7, which is a lost cause after it's last chance at redemption has long since sailed (Rockman X: DiVE). This is a VERY unique experince from start to finish and I'd like to see what the infamous Last Story has in store for the P-06 team.
And that is partially how I feel about the Mega Man Fanbase. P-06 is a perfect example of fans taking action. So far, all I've seen Mega Man fans doing is lament that things could've been better despite having all the tools they need to improve X7.@@Elyseon
@GaiaX5 Unfortunately, the last Mega Man fangame I remember hearing about (multiplayer arena brawler) got slapped with a C&D, and the makers had to shut down the servers.
Fully agree with that one part... Something original to take full advantage of these characters would be so good. I mean hell, you only get to play as some of these characters as little as TWO TIMES throughout the ENTIRETY of 06.... That's going to be a real shame when project 06 is fully finished.
Its crazy when you really think about it. Sonic 06 should have been the greatest sonic game to be made. Its sad it never reached that because it was rushed. Also considering tge fact that some of my most fond gaming memories came from Sonic 06. Id love to see Sega remake this game with yhe help of the developer who made the Sonic 06 fan project. Just keep Mephalis one shotting and deleting Sonic in the story. That easily the best part of the story. This game is what Sonic games should be. Its sort of luke this with Sonic Frontiers but the Project 06 seems like the full evolution od what Frontiers is.
I think 06 story can be greatly improved with minor fixes and rewrites without compromising storybeats and stage orders. Just make Elise a kid whose dad recently died a weeks ago has just assumed the crown and is now having her first soleanna festival when Eggman arrives to bully a literal child. This fixes so many things. First, Elise having the blue emerald for 20+ years doesn't fit with other sonic games, her having it for a couple of weeks makes more sense. Second, i empatize a lot more with her character if she hasn't had the time to process grief, was told not to cry and move on with a huge responsibility on her shoulders, at a very young age. Rather that a well stablished monarch that just give up and let herself capture eveytime. Gameplay wise Sonic carrying someone 2/3 his size on his quills would be adorable. With a few dialogue rewrites, Mephiles' mission would not be to make an queen cry for the first time, it could be drown a little girl in utter despair and hopelessness. Then killing Sonic would make sense. Just think about it, everything falls into place
I played 06 for the first time last year just prior to playing P-06, and honestly even with the og I felt, if it had been actually finished, 06 could've been one of if not the best Sonic game, there was so much to love but it was simply not a finished product, it's an alpha, neither on a story level nor gameplay. Project 06 to me feels like a realization of what 06 could've and should've been, it's not 1-1 with what it likely would've been but man it feels like it's done everything it can to fix and refine what was there without compromising it's original vision and I think it's in part why people have recently gone back and reflected on what was good in 06 despite it's major issues.
Saying that this proves Sonic 06 would have been the best Sonic game EVER given more time to cook and less crunch is probably an exaggeration, but still, more power to people pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into turning SONIC 06 into something better…
Fun fact: Sonic, Shadow & Silver each have a secret ability that can be obtained by getting all S Ranks on their stages then finding that ability in specific stages (and for Sonic you also need to collect all of the Gems
I think Silver's platforming quirks can be fixed just by adjusting the location of objects from their original location to better suit his higher top speed.
Hearing all this praise makes me wonder... What if this was the Sonic game we got back in 06? How would a successful Sonic 06 game shaped the franchise going forward? Would Sonic Unleashed never be a thing? Would they have stuck with this fresh slate and further explored this more "serious" direction for the series? If Sega was as devoted as their fans, things could have gone a lot more smoothly for them.
Unleashed would've been like 06 but instead of mach speed you'd have the boost formula. The boost was always planned to be implemented, even in heroes and rush you can see the vision they had but if 06 didn't fail they wouldn't have leaned into it so heavily.
Everything about this is absolutely fantastic. Hell, once this is complete, it'll be my first time playing Sonic 06 after avoiding it all these years. Now the question remains: Do they have the balls to fix the story?
Modern 3d Sonic could use some non-linear level design from classic series like Sonic2 and Sonic3 - with 2 or 3 different paths to the end. That's just my opinion though, but thats exactly what i've been missing in such games this whole time
I asked Chaos X to make an option so the camera is higher and sees you angled down so we have better vision of what's underneath us. Also would be cool to add some visual queue that would do the job shadows would do in old 3D platformers so we can keep the actual shadows and also have the sureness of landing
I've never agreed with the "You can polish a turd, but at the end of the day it's still a turd" sentiment when it comes to Sonic 06, because 06 at it's core isn't a turd, in fact at it's core it's really just another adventure game, it's just at a programming standpoint, the execution was terrible (being rushed and unfinished and all). You can tell that 06 was an ambitious game and I've defended 06 for a long time because I truly believe that they wanted 06 to be the best Sonic game of all time at that point, it's just too bad that Sega wanted it released before Holiday of 2006. And I believe P-06 proves that if 06 was actually polished and refined to it's fullest extent, it would've easily been one of, if not the greatest Sonic game of all time.
I'm aware there's a MULTITUDE of amazing details and other things I didn't cover, but hey, that's what the eventual VS video is for when this project is finished. However long that might be. Play the game.

Great Spotlight Johnny! You said it best. “Project 06 is Shaping up to be the Adventure 3 06 was meant to be.” I hope you can find the chance to explore the levels just a little more (maybe get those S ranks?), because there may be a “Super” surprise waiting for you. :)
If the Last Story/Boss update comes out and sticks the landing, we could be looking at a Top 5 Sonic Game instead of just a Top 10 one lol. I am curious if the actual campaigns themselves will happen afterwards, not entirely sure if they're worth the effort but as is, P-06 is a miraculously great game that I need to play way more of. ChaosX and everyone else who helped out on this did a stellar job.
chaosX said that story won't happen, but who knows if mods bring it in given how in depth the modding API beatz made seems to be.
Man... imagine the alternate timeline where this was Sonic '06 on launch.
It wouldn’t have been it was on Xbox 360 not pc it would not have been anywhere near as good
@@schakiarligonde1736man can you shut the hell up I see you everywhere get a life for God's sake if you don't like the game just don't play it stop going around saying "uhhh it could never be good trust me bro"
@@schakiarligonde1736 How would the Xbox 360 handicap the revamped gameplay? The graphics are mostly have been saturated, with the effects stronger.
I cannot express how long I've wait for you to do a video on CURRENT Project 06'. It is legitimately fantastic and one of my favorite sonic games.
Simply amazing. What I appreciate the most is the time they took to polish up shadow’s skating animation. After SA2 it never looked as smooth. Well done
Seeing my Silver cutscene animation in a Johnny video is so surreal XD
Thank you so much, Johnny. I’ve been a fan of your videos for many years now, and I always will be.
Typa shit I’m on fr
Sega REALLY need to pull a Valve/Black Mesa here. Support the completion of the project and release it officially. Incredible work.
Sonic 06 came out 17 years ago. Now, kids born in that year graduating high school. I can still remember 2006 like it yesterday. Anyone feel old yet?
If this is what Sonic 06 have looked like back when it first came out, it could have been hailed as one of the greatest Sonic games of all time
Finally, Johnny is praising Sonic 06 after 10 years from his old review on it. Good work, bro.😎👍
The original 50 minute long video haha
Sonic 06 is his favorite adventure game 😏😁
10 years…
@@mysteryperson1958Playing as SONIC is his favorite Adventure game. Which he said Sonic was the best parts of 1 and 2, sooooooo…
@@homuraakemi103 Johnny's old review in 2013 on the Sonic 06 game.
Just imagine where the series would be nowadays if Sonic 06 launched like this. Maybe as Sonic 07 or 08.
Sonic and Silver play great too, but Shadow really is something amazing.
brooo Im saying just was playing him yesterday and thought exactly this 😢😢
Not covered in this video: Shadow and Silver have their own hidden upgrades in the fashion of Sonic's gems, if you enjoyed the last cutscene of Shadow's story, you may enjoy what his upgrade has to offer.
This game needs to get funded by Sega to rerelease this game for PS5, Xbox Series X & of course PC and fix some of the story if they were able too lol
I feel the exact same way with a lot of the things you said here. This game is a masterpiece as far as Sonic games go.
This is what sonic 06 should’ve been
Goes without saying, doesn’t it?
Love the cozy vibes on this one. Omega looks so damn awesome, reminds me of his portrayal in the comics. Considering what Sonic Team showed today with the final DLC for Frontiers, what you said at the end about what makes a great Sonic game, I think there is hope.
And here's something else: it's playable on Steam Deck! You have to make a few tweaks, but its fully playable and runs well!
I can’t believe it! Johnny loves Sonic 06?????
Sonic Project 06 is what Sonic 06 should've been
Shadow Chaos Blasting that hallway of Badniks was oddly satisfying, being a survivor of his eponymous game and at one point attempting to 100% it for some reason.
10:24 And that’s when you gotta draw a line in the sand and say “What am I willing to put up with today?”
My review of this game: It's very satisfying
My favorite thing about Shadow is chaining together carefully placed homing attacks and spears on enemies to stay in the air as long as possible across different rooms in the stage, just to get that "PERFECT" score.
When P-06 is complete, story and all. Here’s hoping there going to be a revisit Let’s Play sometime in the future.
Sega should unironically hire them and release this officially.
Sonic Chaos X would be a great name.
Fan projects forever so special to me. Any company taking those down is truly lost.
I'm so glad to see you covering this now that it's matured so much!
28:33 the frame rate drops so heavily, because there is something wrong with the reflections and the volumetric lights. Putting the reflections off and the volumetric lights to medium or lower will eliminate the lag.
I find it awesome that a people with passion can creat something as amazing as this
Kudos to the developer. I don't play sonic, but hearing you gush about everything says all I need to know.
“People like me for my sonic content.” - Johnny
No, people like you for that gorgeous face and that sexy voice. The sonic content is just the cherry on top.
If ChaosX puts out a polished full game I will download and play it.
Now I can safely say
06 IS ADVENTURE 3
Perfect timing, just tried this out a couple days ago! Really good! There are a couple little things I am not fond of, or maybe not used to, but its simply amazing! Sonic 06 was my first Sonic game, which might be why I never hated it, but MAN do I wish it released in a similar state of quality like how P-06 is.
This game is right up there with all the greatest Sonic games like 2&3, Adventure 1&2, and Generations.
Adventure 1 and 2 are definitely not some of the greatest sonic games ever made. The other three games you mentioned are though.
@@okagron Agree to disagree then, but they're both in my top 5.
Generations, Adventure 1 & 2, Unleashed and P06 would be 5th. If you don't count P06 Frontiers would be in it's place.
Meanwhile, people have no doubt given up on X7, which is a lost cause after it's last chance at redemption has long since sailed (Rockman X: DiVE). This is a VERY unique experince from start to finish and I'd like to see what the infamous Last Story has in store for the P-06 team.
It takes intentional effort to screw up something like X-DiVE. Capcom really hates Mega Man.
This project is seriously amazing. I’ve been so happy to keep up with it
Its crazy when you really think about it.
"This is f**king alchemy! This is turning a turd to gold!" Classic closing line, Johnny. XD 36:38
I can listen to Johnny all day talking about video games, I really can't wait for the day P-06 becomes a full game
Project '06 is incredibly close to the 3d Sonic game I dreamed of as a child 😢
Hell yeah Johnny! I've been here since before your original 06 video, love your work bro 💪
The passion for this project is insane
Saying that this proves Sonic 06 would have been the best Sonic game EVER given more time to cook and less crunch is probably an exaggeration, but still, more power to people pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into turning SONIC 06 into something better…
Nah, the crappily written story and questionable game design has nothing to do with crunch or rushed development.
@@jlev1028uhhh yes yes it did lol
They would've changed the story if they had time
Same goes for questionable game designs
The 2020s has been a good time for Sonic fans so far
16:39 "Im just going to release and go about my merry business" lmao 😂 PAUSE! lol
There are very few sonic games that couldn’t be great if they were carefully remade, this goes a long way to show that.
This needs to be released on every console
i still remember johnny nearly spitting out his tea at the loading screen speed during SHC.
I was waiting for Johnny to have another chance to talk about his favorite Sonic game again 😄
It makes me pretty happy to see a game with the 4Kids voice cast getting praised so much
You forgot to mention that collecting all the gems and S ranks lets you collect the rainbow gem which lets you use Super Sonic in all the levels :D
