I clearly remember there being a time when the block was just called "grass", the 1 block tall decoration being called "tall grass" and the 2 block tall decoration being called "double tall grass" It made more sense than whatever the Nether is going on here.

Na, it actually requires a lot of time to do something like this. You have to pitch the idea, You have to give reasons why the name should be changed, get approval by the team, and then finally you can change grass to short grass. Plus the bug fixes in the snapshot, those also take some time to find the problem and fix.

I'll probably still refer to them by their old names, but them being different internally is a lifesaver as far as tab completion is concerned. (the amount of times I've accidentally done minecraft:grass instead of minecraft:grass_block is astounding)

They should just use the best notation for sizes, Starbucks notation: Tall grass, Grande grass and Venti grass
I can't wait for the update to release with 4 tick lamps, only for a mod to release that reverts it back to 1 tick. Maybe we'll see redstone inovation using 1 tick bulbs to add pressure to mojang to fix it themselves
Unrelated to the grass types, I might just download a mod that reverts the copper bulb and crafter to how they SHOULD be when the update releases.

They changed the way it worked. Used to have a one tick delay but Mojang changed it "to be similar" to other redstone blocks, which use 2 tick delays. This ruined one of the main draws of the block, which was to be a very compact t-flipflop, naturally everyone wasn't happy with the change but it seems like they won't change it back

@@okebedokeIdk what Op was on, but the main draw wasn't the very compact t-flipflop (cause it still works like that). It's the tick delay. It made everything so much faster and made 1-tick machine stuff possible.

Magical frogs that jump 5 meters in the air no problem, but can't handle a 2-pixel firefly
This brings up an interesting lore question. are magma cubes made of magma or magma cream? If they are made of magma cream, it would make sense for frogs to eat them since magma cream has fire resistant properties. If they are made of actual magma, then nothing makes sense.
@@tepig2828 Considering they can't set the player on fire, but Blazes can, this lends credence to the idea they're made of magma cream. For this logic to work however, blaze rods should set players on fire when they're held.
Fireflies are poisonous to frogs in much the same way apple seeds are to us. They taste bad and leave a tingling sensation in the mouth.
Okay for a second I thought the _block_ itself was being renamed to just grass and then grass to short grass, and that'd honestly made things worse (As for data stored from previous versions I mean)
But I GUESS just renaming grass is good then, I tend to use world edit and set minecraft:grass and then be foolishly jumpscared by foliage instead of the actual grass block lol

I'm glad they changed it. In the past you used to be able to set blocks to grass by simply using "grass". Then all of a sudden when using worldedit you had to specifiy "grass_block" and I kept making the mistake over and over again over the years and would set blocks to the now called "short grass".
You can also use the id number of the grass block, just saying

@@frank_calvert Dirt + mycelium is called mycelium. A block full of snow is called snow block. Makes no sense calling dirt + grass "grass block" tbh.
@@sorano9733 because mycelium isnt confused with anything else, and snowy grass blocks aren't their own block, it's just a texture.

Mycelium, which shares the same characteristcs as grass block, is not called mycelium block, which shows that they added a "block" to the name only to eliminate confusion, and that they would otherwise named it "grass".
That said, in the sense that the other "grass" is not a block, it does do a good job at differenciating the two. But still, the name makes no sense in every other aspect.

Thank you Phoenix for not letting us or Mahjong forget their utter clowntastic decision to remove the firefly. Instead of ignoring that they're poisonous because it is a non-issue, instead of letting the frogs eat something else, or even instead of killing frogs who get fed fireflies by the player (parrot and cookie style).
They did let frogs eat small slimes, but even then, I agree with you. I don't think the fact it's poisonous to frogs should make them scrap an entire feature, and I personally would've preferred them being kept as an ambient mob (like Bats and Ocelots) or add regular flies in that matter.
That reaason was always bullshit, that’s obviously not the reason they removed, that’s just what they want you now, so they don’t have to admit how fucking awful their optimisation is, the game can’t handle Firflies because it would be too demanding, the “Fireflies are poisonous to Frogs excuse” was just that, an excuse… so they don’t have to admit how terribly unoptimised the game is…
So if you want to hate on Mojang please hate on them for the right reasons :3

My head also suffers with the new naming scheme. I see "short grass" being taller than "grass" and that makes no sense to me. Ofcourse tis a block vs just something ontop of a block but why dont we just call the block... GRASS BLOCK, so there's a freaking distinction???
grass block, short grass and long grass. Now it makes sense even to my ocd brain. Imagine gold blocks being called "gold" and ingots being called "larger gold" and nuggets "Smaller gold".

Yeah the amount of times I lagged out a world with grass while using worldedit, I'm totally good with this.
But why didn't they just change "Grass" to be called "Grass Block" or even something like "Grassy Dirt" or even "Short Grass" instead? There were over a dozen different ways they could have made this change, and they decided to go with the route that doesn't make much sense adjectively.

OTOH when the city fines me for not mowing my lawn, I'll tell them to take it up with Mojang, because if it's less than 1m tall, it's already short grass.
Funnily enough, Pokémon are no longer found in Tall Grass.

I'd bet money this change got made because someone got sick of doing /give grass and getting the tall grass instead of grass blocks.
the "real short grass" isn't grass, it's grass_block. calling them Grass block, short_grass, and tall_grass removes the short -med-tall issue, as if you include the block that is the grass_block, it is between them in height
unless they want to make a block that is actually grass texture all the way around (honestly wild that that isn't a thing yet, hope ya like moss) and rename grass_block to topsoil or something like that then this name change is just a nice, if minor, tweak.
I feel like "grass" is just standard grass length and ig the other 2 are sort of "modifications" for the standard grass. The names do make sense to me. You put adjectives in front of the "blocks" (idrk how they are called) and the block itself is a standard grass block without a descriptive adjective.

Except when you accidentally fill an area with Grass (not the block).
Especially when most blocks arent "X Block"
Most of the ones that ARE named "Block of X" are something you craft from items, eg Block of Lapis, Block of Coal, Bone Block
With a few outliers being Various Coral Blocks (vs the Fans), Dripstone Blocks (made from Pointed Dripstone, Magma Block (maybe), Moss Block, Purpur Block.
The fact that he is "not ready to come into your house and tell you that is a bad idea" implies he will be ready at some point.
It’s good they made this change, because I always accidentally fill with what is now called short grass, instead of grass blocks. Now I don’t have to lose that ability with grass block. Also grass block would be not having dirt in a way, that makes sense that it’s now just called grass in general.
People make fun of Mojang for little changes like this but it's honestly really interesting. Someone working on Mojang makes a slightly different sound for a block or renames something or corrects some colors in pixels? I love that attention to detail
