    Great breakdown of costs! I went to Vietnam a few years ago and really liked it... circumstances recently changed here mean that I'm now considering moving there permanently because it's so much cheaper than here in Australia - of course we all have to wait until we can travel again, but after that...

    Very nice video, thank you! I was in Da Nang for 2 years back in the late 60's, stationed at Da Nang air base. For a long time I have wanted to go back there, to be able to spend time exploring this beautiful area without the war situation I was in then. Hopefully soon, my gf and I will do that! However, one thing I want to mention is that I was a Vietnamese linguist back then, and I am obligated to pass this on to you, lol! When you say "Vietnam", the a in nam is a soft "a"... as in ball, or tall, or call, whereas you are pronouncing it as a hard a, as in ram, or bat, or mash.... understand? Anyway, very nice video, just subscribed!

Our Prime Minister at the time, Jean Chretien, said that Canada does not memorialize those who served as mercenaries in an unofficial war that Canada did not participate in.

I will go back in the Fall when it is open again and I am vaccinated. Absolutely love Danang. Love Vietnam - have so many stories!😂😂 Not just Vietnam though - all of Asia is awesome and I have been to every country in East Asia over many years. I started out as an English Teacher in Japan in 1991 - lived there for 6 years, married a Japanese and then moved back to Canada. Started going back to Asia in the 2000's for work and family and then lived in China and taught in a high school there from 2017-2019. Hello Megan, Vietnam will open its border for international travel starting July 1st, but with one month E Visa only at this time, will they require a 14 days quarantine in hotel or self-quarantine? what do you think? also thanks for the awesome videos.

    • @PortableProfessional
      @PortableProfessional  4 года назад +3

      Yikes, that is a great question. I would assume no quarantine if they are opening up to tourism.... but honestly I guess we will need to wait and see. Great point!!

    • @tuannguyen7878
      @tuannguyen7878 4 года назад +2

      Currently, our country's border is closed for tourism still, only special cases are allowed to enter Vietnam and all these cases are mandatory to stay in government quarantine centers.

    • @warrenjohnson5971
      @warrenjohnson5971 4 года назад

      Depends where you're coming from. If you're coming from UK/USA then likely you cannot enter, even with a quarantine. Reality is that until a vaccine is available or US/UK gets its act together they won't be allowed in.

    • @ongcaaacong
      @ongcaaacong 4 года назад

      @John Wei yes sadly the info "Vietnam will open its border for international travel starting July 1st" is wrong, you have to wait. But I hope the situation will be better soon (14 days quarantine is compulsory I think) :)

      I loved "Cham museum" in Da Nang with all the figures and sculptures. For three weeks a journey from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City was an interesting, exotic experience, but I could not imagine to live there. As a German, the Communist form of government
      in Vietnam seems to me like our former DDR/GDR (=German Democratic Republic) we had in East Germany until the "fall of the wall" in 1989. Who
      criticizes the government goes to jail, spies listen on public places what you are talking about, Communist propaganda posters on the walls etc. By the way, I was happy, when I had survived the crazy traffic with all the scooters at the end.
      1:02 min For an average market woman or a cook in Vietnam 315 US $ rent are unpayable. For Vietnam this flat is fairly noble (for us in the west it is average, normal standard of living), only some rich people could afford it there. On our journey we also "lived in a bubble" in fairly luxurious 4-stars-hotels, partly with pools and even a private beach . But normal Vietnamese often sleep with 4 or 5 people in small rooms on the floor...

Not sure if Canadians can open a credit card with Charles Schwab but they will refund you all your ATM fees at the end of the month.

    I have been living in vietnam as an expat and think your costs all seem accurate. The only ones i would avoid if staying here are the local atm fees and transferwise fees which i think you said was about $15 usd each? Per month or more?...
    By using debit card like citibank and others...with no overseas withdrawal costs and specific local atms that are fee free with there certain cards....there are no costs ar all. Over a year this is a big saving when most atms are as low as $150 to $250usd withdrawal per transaction.
    Rent etc can be paid on card or just withdraw cash and pay. Simply have a home regular bank and transfer funds as needes online to topup citibank card day before and withdraw. This is also safer as if you lose your card it is not a credit card with exposure or wads of cash taken away for your complete holiday. Free wifi is everywhere pretty much. And it is almost possible to do without topping up mobile prepaid many months unless with free calls and video chat on wifi. Just need occasionally if need to make calls to a bank or family without internet phone.

      @ned2650 3 года назад

      @L F yes I was able to open a Vietnam bank account having a TRC temp resident card. However the transfer fees even using transferwise etc or bank transfer international come with fees. The Citibank card and right choice of Vietnam atm to use can be totally free free getting funds. If you earn money locally in Vietnam teaching English etc. Sure open a Vietnam bank account. Usually need a visa or TRC with at least 1 year left to run. However like a lot of things here. Depends who you ask and which bank you can get different answers.

    • @ned2650
      @ned2650 4 года назад

      Usually cheaper for year contracts. Some modern new apartments here in vung tau offer one month free. Some apartments also do have a monthly site mainteance fee that nay cover security lifts parking water etc etc...approc $25 month. Some inclusive. Depend how much you enjoy ac....and danang can be bloody hot and humid....electricity can vary from $25 to $100 per month. Some apartments seem more extreme for some reason!.
      Daily rate apartment and hotels are almost double monthly rates....if you are staying 2 weeks some city in vn.....stay longer!....same price.
      If you do a year contract...a small house with balony or courtyard etc can be the same cost as an apartment. Depends on your preference.

      @@peterskeuken7194 It really depends where in the US though. One thing to consider is healthcare is way more expensive in the US. If you're in the US, you better hope you have a good job that provides you health insurance. Even with a health insurance plan, healthcare costs here are way higher than most of the world. While public transportation is generally pretty good in Europe, most US cities have pretty bad public transportation so a car is basically a necessity. The big cities are extremely expensive in the US. Try $750,000 USD for a crappy house in Los Angeles or over $1 million for a crappy apartment in New York city. Houses in the bay area (California) are always over $1 million while other coastal cities like Boston and Seattle are easily $750k or higher. Basically most desirable cities in the US with a strong job market have ludicrous cost of living. Social benefits in the US are likely worse than the Netherlands. Raising a child is harder as the cost of childcare and university are ridiculous. On the federal level, there is no guaranteed maternal leave for working mothers. The list goes on and on. The grass is always greener on the other side, but every place has their own problems. I will say if you make a good income though, living in the US is probably better because of the lower taxes.
