I love it when you look proud of honorable characters like Maximus, good people, good leaders, great warriors. And I'm glad when antagonist piss you off, those actors know how to make you hate them. Anyways, when your eyes started leaking you almost made me cry, bro.
The Germanian Barbarians aren’t really Vikings the age of the Vikings wouldn’t come until 620 years after the events of this movie but the barbarians are distant ancestors of The Vikings
@@HunterAndre_21 This is such great movie--much more Hollywood than history. But still---such an awesome flick. You should check out the HBO series Rome--amazing series.
Originally, Proximo was going to go down fighting against the soldiers, but the actor that played him died before they could film that scene. You'll notice his background when he says "shadows and dust" is from the scene in the Colosseum when he tells Maximus that we are all shadows and dust. You're right that it would have been better for him to die fighting, and that's what was intended, but it just couldn't be done after the actor died.
Thanks for sharing that. Now that you point it out, it's painfully obvious that was taken from the earlier scene. But under the circumstances, that's all they can do.
The actor who played Proximus (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta, he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.
I love the fact that the first battle scene is practical with fire and explosions. The location was in Surrey, UK and the Royal Forrestry Commission had plans to deforest the location, so Ridley Scott volunteered to do the job for them. I think the job was well done lol.
It shows how respected Maximus was when in the first fight scene in the colosseum. one of the other gladiators says he served with him before. Knowing who he was and not telling people who Maximus actually is and keeping his identity a secret out of respect for Maximus
The African actor’s name is Dijmon Honsou. He’s known for the movie Amistad, Blood Diamond and I think he’s good in Never Back Down amongst many other movies. Martial artist and has a son with Kimora Lee Simmons.
"WHO WILL HELP ME CARRY HIM?" ...and the people step forward. thats what gets me😢. the greatness. great reaction. and to think tarantino preferred braveheart to this
@Devin G one of my 50 favorite films from one of my 10 favorite directors. This movie suits you well so was a treat to see you fall in love with it, so many great performances in this. Great tale of friendship, honor, loyalty, love and sacrifice. As I always tell you the movies that move us emotionally and mentally are really the best art there can be.
22:01 Marcus Aurelius is the one that called Maximus the son he should have had. this is an epic film, one of my all time favs! the one that took in Maximus as a slave, the actor passed away during filming, and they digitally added a few parts of him near the end of the film. another great reaction!
You should check out Master and Commander with Russell Crowe. The best film about naval warfare in the early 1800s ever made, and one of Crowe's best movies.
I just slipped over here from your Major Payne reaction... I was SOOOO happy that you hadn't seen MP. Such a funny, underrated movie. 😂❤ ...Now you get to watch Gladiator for the first time and I couldn't be happier. 😄☺️
Gladiator is the ultimate movie for men. It's the best 'guys guy ' movie I've ever seen, and ever seen in general. A story about integrity, honor, revenge -- which all men can relate to. It's been my favorite movie since I saw it in 2000 when I was 10 years old. You don't have a soul if you don't shed a tear at the end, it still gets me years later after seeing it 100+ times. You shed a tear though so you do have a soul, lol. Great reaction brother.
In the intro they weren’t saying that people died because of Caesar. It was just a way of saying that the Roman Empire was very vast so people “Lived and Died” in the borders of it’s empire.
Sort of a cousin to the saying during the height of the British Empire that "The sun never sets on the British Empire" because they had colonies in every part of the world so that was day in at least one part of the empire.
Hey there Devin. Your videos make me feel so happy because you don't hold back! Keep up the good work my friend.... Love from Westport, Ireland....👍❤️🇺🇸🇮🇪
I hate to comment twice on the first couple of minutes but I'm glad you caught how rehearsed it was. He's obviously a man of status because of his birth he's not really training and even if he is it's in a controlled environment he doesn't have bravery.
Definitely look up Russell Crowes interviews about being in Italy and how people still recognize him and respond to him. This movie made him a national treasure in Italy
this is a good telling of old rome, love the story, the acting, all of it mmm perfect. many tried to recapture the magic of this film, but none came close. nearest to it is brave heart. if you aint seen it tho merlin is a great movie too
George, when saying unlimited rights, was referring to the saying, "Your rights end at the tip of my nose," unlimited as long as you don't trample on someone else's rights.
The centurion threw down the sword because that way he isn’t handing Maximus the sword to kill the Emperor, but he will not stop Maximus from doing it. That held up the ways of the army
I've said this before, but Devin is the NCO that I wouldn't mind going on duty with. My platoon commander would be like Who wants the night shift? and i'd be like, "Is Devin the guy?"
Caesar is easily top 5 greatest men of all time. Maybe not number 1, but right up there. But it gets confusing because his name became the word for king in three languages (Caesar, Tzar, Kaiser) so there were many Caesars. Definitely watch some documentaries on Julius Caesars campaigns one day 😁 [Augustus is pretty great too, but Julius was the actual warrior]
Joquain Phoenix's face at the 27:00 mark here is one of a man who knows he's going to die. As viewers, we don't know how, but we KNOW it'll happen! And it's epic!
some weird nostalgia: i got my very first make out sesh at the end of this movie. Was living as an exchange student up in WA, one of the best years of my life.
Amazing Movie and I Man Cried too. Although this movie wouldn't have been as satisfying if it wasn't for Joaquin Phoenix as Commudus. He played the hell out of that role as a bad guy.
Proximo, the owner of the gladiators, didn't want Maximus gone. He respected him as a fellow warrior, but he also wanted him to understand that the empire only loves you if you do their bidding. Fight, and kill or be killed, and they love you. He worried that Maximus would get in over his head if he rebelled against the emperor, and he probably wanted for Maximus the same glory and honor that he, himself, received in his time.
Yes, they are Germanic, but the Romans labeled all Celtic and other tribes as Gauls. They were primarily European but were pretty much wiped out. When the Romans tried to conquer Scotland, they built a wall to keep them out. Lol. They sent a kind of messenger to Ireland (my home), and the person never returned. It's believed he was killed, but I don't know for sure.
You want to see another movie about Kings & successions you should check out The Man in the Iron Mask. It's based off the book by Alexandre Dumas. The same guy that wrote The Three musketeers and it stars Leonardo Dicaprio.
War Dogs are a thing. in fact there have been famous war dogs that put fear in the hearts of men when they learned the dog of war have been unleashed on the battlefield.

Komodus Is Joker means Joaquin Phoenix
"I will see you again. But not yet. Not yet." always makes me smile.
my mother said this to my uncle at his casket when he passed in July. Her only sibling.
MORTAL KOMBAT music plays ha ha ha
When Maximus takes off his helmet and turns around to reveal himself to Commodus is one of the coldest moments in film history straight up.
his name is Maximus Decimus Meridius
Originally, Proximo was going to go down fighting against the soldiers, but the actor that played him died before they could film that scene. You'll notice his background when he says "shadows and dust" is from the scene in the Colosseum when he tells Maximus that we are all shadows and dust.

A classic is when a movie or song or album is felt and sometimes bring on past memory of emoting.
I remember the whole theatre was silent upon waking out when it was over. Epic movie. Definitely in the top 10

“They’re laughing, that shit ain’t funny.” Starts laughing
Masterpiece of a movie. One of the absolute best! The ending is absolutely incredible.

The part of the wife and child gets me every time.
The best movie of (at least) the last 30 years and easily my greatest cinema experience. Thanks, man!
As sad as it was, it was still beautiful. It made sense for Maximus to die in triumph, as all he wanted was to go home and be with his family.
"WHO WILL HELP ME CARRY HIM?" ...and the people step forward. thats what gets me😢. the greatness. great reaction. and to think tarantino preferred braveheart to this

Marcus Aurelias was Ceasar….that was his official name. Ceasar is a term used to describe a ruler, king , royalty

This is Rome. They do not hang you. They nail you to the cross.
Many Roman emperors were called Caesar, in honor of both leading figures of the early empire, Julius and Augustus Caesar.
Caesar gave root to Kaiser and Tsar ....
