  • Today we install Linux onto a Apple 2008 MacBook to breath new life into it again. I decided to go with PopOS and show the steps needed to complete this rather easy install.

Yes, Linux really extends the working life of older computers!👍👍 My personal preference is Linux Mint Mate version and I also use Zorin on a small laptop and LMDE 6 the 32 bit version on a 17 year old laptop.

My first distro I messed with back in the day was Madrake around 1999-2000 timeframe back when it was still hard lol. I might dig that up and install it in my old Gateway Solo 9300.

@@IkesVintageTech That could be an interesting video!👍👍 My Dell Inspiron 9400 from 2005 is currently working well with LMDE 6 installed, all basic tasks work fine, YT., videos are best played at 360p though, so in my opinion, it's doing okay for it's age. I also have a Dell Inspiron 9300 from 2004 and it works well enough for basic tasks with Sparky Linux LXQT 32 bit installed, YT., videos will only play at the lowest setting though, but it's interesting to get old computers working again.

It's a shame that the retina models offer the bare minimum of modularity via the SSD, but everything else is glued together like a phone

Yeah, kinda sad to only have that. Now the new ones you don’t even have that to upgrade.

@@IkesVintageTech Quite dissapointing, but even back then Apple made bad/dubious decisions. Though at least they allowed for upgrades, it doesn't exactly make up for hardware failures and questionable design(s)

I was really hoping you were going to address the wake-up hang problem (MacBook Pro Retina 2015 suspends when you close the lid but won't wake up again without a hard reset). Would love some help on that!

I had that MacBook and gladly got rid of it when my battery started puffing up, after just being replaced earlier in the year. Already beyond the warranty/recall program too. Didn’t give up on Macs but will never own a MacBook until the batteries are user replaceable.

The Mac I used obviously doesn’t have TB like the 2012 but if it’s not getting beyond that possibly try a prior revision and see if that installer works then update or attempt another version of Linux.

I love the all black macbook look. I wish Apple would offer macbook pros in black, but they are stuck in the 2010 silver look for now, I guess. LOL.

I still use Macs but swore off MacBooks after working part time at an Apple Authorized Service Provider mainly because a battery replacement is the entire top case and not just a swap. I sold my MacBook Pro and went iPad Pro because it does everything I need for mobile use. I think the new ones have a Space Black option but I edit all my videos on an AMD Ryzen 5900 because it still smokes my M1 Mini in that respect.

@IkesVintageTech I'm a PC guy, so I don't daily drive any apple products, and that is partly why. They are designed with themselves in mind, not the consumer. However, I do maintain 2012 Macbook Pros for myself and my wife. Mine is just a novelty, and she likes hers for backing up her iPhone.

Just about to try this up. Have you tried installing the the wifi drivers with the mounted USB drive? I watched another clip where some guy managed to get the wireless card drivers with some weird method of leaving the USB flash drive in, opening manage drivers and it found it. If not, how's BT tethering? Would that do the trick?

I had to revert back to MacOS for a bit because I needed to burn old Toast files from the Archive. This was the only machine I had that could burn without jumping through hoops. Will have to get it back on there. I never had an issue with the Wi-Fi in this model with PopOS, but I do know the camera isn't easily supported. I never tried BT tethering with it but will check that out next time.

Did you try using Mac OS 10.7.5 with Arctic Fox 43.1? That might work very well. There is a 64 bit version specifically for mac os 10.7
