I think it was just a bit of fun on the electric violin! It’s different to an acoustic instrument. We should instead give credit for Ben from Fuse violin for getting on TV and blinging it large. I don’t think he takes himself too seriously and but rather performs to an audience for entertainment purposes. Whereas classical players are often boring. Not fair to take the piss out of him too much methinks! Electric violin is a thing and not many people succeed at crossover. I think the Fuse violin group was an exciting idea, hopefully still going. Not everyone’s cup of tea. Since then we have had Lindsey Stirling, and despite not being a top classical violinist I think she is a great entertainer and an amazing person has inspired more children to take up the violin. She isn’t Nicola Benedetti but both them are role models in a different way. Still enjoyed your video haha tho 😂
Ray...regarding the crazy goal setting....and your reference of breaking a leg and then trying to rehab by climbing Everest, well, I had to share. Although I had run 4 marathons, 21 years ago I had a massive heart attack, was dead for 2 minutes, brought back, and had double bypass surgery, where my sternum was broken. My marathon running buds visited me in the hospital, and I decided I wanted to run the marathon I was scheduled for, which was 3 months and 3 days after open heart surgery. When I got home, I couldn't make it up the stairs to my bedroom, even though I had climbed the highest mountains in the continental US. I had to let the grafts heal, and couldn't start running until 7 weeks before the marathon, but ran 26.2 miles with a broken sternum, which likely constitutes a perverse world record for running a marathon in the least amount of time from having a heart attack and open heart surgery. That crazy/insane goal literally saved my life, as it strengthened my heart. So I kind of get where Mr. Speedy is, but at least regarding the violin, maybe he should play a bit more accurately.
Don't waste your talent on these guys! It is so much better when we can take the example from your playing ! It would be nice if you did tutorials for intermediate players ( I am only a beginner 😢). Thanks Ray, you are a violin's magician
From what I've seen on his Instagram ( I found it somehow XD) he has now moved on from the "fastest violinist" phase and is now a producer who writes music for video games and stuff. He also joked about the embarrassing past and has the "if you can play it slowly you can play it quickly" merch. I swear this dude has one best redemption arcs E V E R
I think back then he was in a relationship where the girl was encouraging him or pushing him to do all those stupid challenges and participating in their band. Whether that relationship was healthy or not, I can't tell.
Always nice to see people have redemption arcs, also really nice to see him use the embarrassing moment as a way to turn around and help improve his career (assuming he has from your comment). Thanks for the info!
Ben Lee's interpretation should be called Flight of the Mosquito, because his electric violin massacring the piece sounds exactly like a mosquito that wants to bite you when you are trying to fall asleep.
You definitely play it faster and more precisely but in such a way as to show us that speed isn’t everything (which we knew but it is good to have confirmation). Thanks for articulating the frustration we all feel over the original video.
Ben’s version: a bumblebee trying to run a race while being confused and having a seizure Ray’s version: the bumblebee has been training for years, is in perfect health and has a map😂
Oooooh I think I saw an interview at some point where an interviewer commented on Ben Lee and asked how David felt having his record broken. His response was something along the lines of "It's okay, because I know I played every note". LOL
I just found Ray's channel and am I the only one who thinks it's kinda crazy that a literal world-class violinist is making a video with memes in it and doesn't ever show how ridiculously good he is
Ray is versatile. I actually unfollowed for a bit when content got too ridiculous for my liking and these days he posted lots of great stuff, too. Karolina Protsenko shared her master class with him, you'd probably enjoy that a lot. The memes are still fun. I love how Ray is playful and nice and emotional. Like he said this is likely the harshest video he shared so far. If you start on this you might not get the right impression. I found Ray via TwoSet violin but unfollowed them long ago as a matter of personal preference. Tons of people seem to like that sort of content.
The final result is ridiculous in the best way. If the talent show guy does some sort of uneasy dying mosquito noise, the slurred version from Chen is so perfect that it actually sounds like a real insect flying, and it is also BEAUTIFUL.
Probably. When I think of how many times a practiced publicly it's still lucky if you find someone to give you proper feedback. I did a few times. Anyways, the community is very encouraging and nice. In terms of encouragrment Tonic can't be put into one video with this...
Seeing Ray like that I thought the making of the app has so much in common with that bumblebee... "if you can produce it in decent quality, you can also just put it there and have users find all the bugs". It's free though, so I really appreciate all the effort and commitment ❤

I don't like negativity. You're always a positive person with a positive influence. This violinist did something stupid, but he already paid a huge price for it.
I see why you might've decided to come back and make this video. I think talking about what was being lost by pushing speed (and demonstrating it yourself!) does adds something to the conversation though!

Would be interesting to see how a classical violinist goes learning a Stéphane Grappelli solo off a recording they've not listened to before. I don't think it would be too tough for you, but interesting to hear how well you can replicate the unfamiliar style ...
hahaha when we heard you practicing this piece on TOnic last year I didn't dream this was where it would end up! Far more entertaining that it had any right to be, Ray :D
i’ve always thought of the bumblebee as a fast paced piece, but speeding it up to that degree kinda kills it. at least ray’s version was recognizable and fully in tune
It's a great example of how caught up in things people can get, and it can drive them to the point of absurdity, becoming ridicule-worthy. It's always healthy to take a step back, welcome a little healthy criticism, get an outside perspective and have a laugh at ourselves. Do what makes you happy! But try to not get obsessed with numbers or competition. Bring it all back home and down to Earth now and then. Also, good luck with improving Tonic! I tried it, but it always just lagged, crashed and there were no features. If it just had some stability and quality of life like a built-in instrument tuner, I could justify using it still.
