Koeman was a beast and was more like a sweeper or Libero then just a centre back, he had a beastly strong and precise shot. So he started from defending positions organizing his team defending, but when his team was on the ball he transformed to a playmaker just behind the box where he was another passing option with the perfect position to unleash his beastly shots once he saw an opening. Players like Koeman, Beckenbauer or Gullit which you can see in this Video too, are the rarest type of players on a football pitch. Because he was really slow (relatively ) but because he could read the game so well he usually was in the right place at the right time going forward , he was great as a defender again for his reading of the game.
Dutch total football was about pressing high up the field, which makes defenders more vulnerable. Therefore you cannot compare koeman’s numbers with traditional defenders. Cruijff’s mantra was, Score more goals than the other side. Therefore goals against were expected, but it was also known the Dutch could score 2x 3x 4x to win the game. Just by looking at this video you can see a Defender scoring more goals than many Top Striker. Whenever I hear other top defenders talk about Koeman they of course mention his scoring ability, but also his uncanny quality of reading the game and being, defensively, in the right spot at the right time to stop someone from scoring. And calling him a dirty player... have you ever watched Italian, Spanish and Portuguese defenders? That’s who’m we started to mimic after 1974. The Dutch did not start out “dirty”, but had to adept to all diving, dirty tackles and unsportsmanlike behaviour opponents were doing. I can remember Ruud Gullit standing in front of camera after a game against Portugal, Gullit was playing for AC Milan at that time, and said that we needed to be willing to play a lot more dirty, like our opponents were doing to win games. Opponents were just there to kick the players instead of the ball.
Whenever I saw Ronald play he sort of played as a half-back, he often pushed forward to the midfield leaving two defenders to cover at all times, besides his defensive qualities Koeman probably was one of the best long range shooter I have ever seen, I will never forget that goal he scored from midfield against FC Porto, I was left stupefied. Due to his qualities he was given more freedom on the pitch than other defenders would have, sometimes playing for extended periods of time as defensive midfielder while getting someone to cover his natural position.

Very handy and capable on both sides of the transitions, defending or attacking in the same top quality!
Guy I love your content... Work on.
Ofc man, the grind never stops
Retired at 34 in 1997. Would’ve liked to have see him play a few more years. Feyenoord were in the Champions League 97-98 season.
are you sure you know what abomination means?
Haha, that was funny. An absolute abomination, even
was thinking the same...he used the wrong word!
He was an aberration.
That’s a better similar sounding word with a more appropriate meaning.
similarly, it pains me how notoriety is used positively these days
People might be using it wrong, but an abomination is commonly used as an alternative to a freak of nature. Which could describe Koeman
i saw a documentary about johan cruyff and his tactics, he used ronald koeman as a libero between the two center backs, they played with 3 defenders when johan was the coach, and ronald was always the first one to get the ball so he could advance with it, he had good skill and good passing
Short story: very fucking good
Probably the best shot from distance... ever. Bobby Charlton comes to mind.
Hey! I had to trim a few seconds of the video at 3:58 dude to copyright issues. Over those few seconds all I said is that despite their first game loss against the soviet union, the netherlands would go on to win all other group stage match and then beat Germany as Koeman scored the opener only to find the Soviet Union in the final and take revenge by beating them to the title.
Unlickly another trim at 8:42 i mainly just said he deserved a 10/10 in technical ability for his progressive style of play
RUclips rly gotta get themselves together
That goal at 4:25, simply blistering and from THAT far away ? Jeeeeeezus.
..and started playing foor the club where many legends where born... Koeman brothers, Luis Suarez, Virgil van Dijk, Arjen Robben, Markus Berg, Erik Nevland, Dusan Tadic...to name a few
its called libero not centre-back and thats a whole different interpritation!
He was a hybrid and read the game differently. Problem is it’s been simplified to tell the story.
libero is a type of CB dude
Wow this stats are just incredible the guy is so underrated
How come this guy doesn’t have more recognition?
Sergio Hamoush? Yea, that's not the correct pronounciation :P
He's Portuguese and that's how we say his name in Portugal. The "H" in your spelling of "Hamoush" is our "R". There's never a wrong pronounciation
@@rodrigomendes5111 Yes there is. If he were Portuguese you could say his name in a Portuguese way, but he isn't so you can't.
The only pronounciation that isn't wrong is the way that he says it.
@@andrew7taylor Well then your pronounciation of his name, along with most people on earth is also probably wrong bc youre not from spain nor is most people. Well done
@@rodrigomendes5111 Well then how do you know I'm not Spanish?
And how does that affect the fact that the people who don't pronounce his name right are pronouncing it wrong?
Well done!
@@andrew7taylor Well first i took context clues because your name seems to be Andrew Taylor, second you yourself said the only correct pronounciation of Sergio's name is how he says it himself. You're going back on yourself now.
I like your videos .. great effort, and shedding the light on some of the great forgoten players deserves an applause. Keep it up.
May i suggest Zola? Thanks :)
Is he even a CB
He would still have been at Barca without the goals. Let that sink in.
Godly numbers! Seriously underrated player!
And they say ramos is better🤷
Ramos is better. Koeman was great though. But ramos is way more complete, and also a way better defender.
@@leobeenplakker6505 ramos is just a player with stronger physique and tackles carelessly, thats not defending, koeman wasn't a man to receive cards, dirty plays and tackles doesn't define you as a better defender
@@baburao3195 putting ramos in that category shows your lack of knowledge. Ramos has been one of the most complete defenders of all time.
@@leobeenplakker6505 lack of knowledge? Thats what he does on the pitch, putting in that category wym, thats what he does, or maybe your knowledge lacks try out that first
@@baburao3195 its not the only thing he does. Or are you that narrow minded ? It’s not my lack of knowledge, Ramos is regarded as one of the best ever, And im not even a fan of him besides his footballing qualitys.
Thank you for making these videos.
Ronald Cowman
Koe means Cow in Holland 😂😆
Do you also know what "man" means?
It's dutch version of cowboy.
@@u.d.7543 I was joking.
Thank you for making this!! ❤️
i like how you name our dutch legends, all wrong haha!
criminally underrated
How was he not converted to a striker? 😂
Because he was really slow (relatively ) but because he could read the game so well he usually was in the right place at the right time going forward , he was great as a defender again for his reading of the game.
I grew up watching him and my idol Rijkaard. I'm Dutch so I know how great he played and even won us the double as coach at Ajax.
He was the most goalscorer sweeper but he wasn't enough good at defending.
uhm. He was part of the total football philosophy from Johan Cruyff. Wich was genius to see.
He was main defender for cryuff tactics, with other 2 two defenders
Thanks for the video man! Love it!
😮koeman was scoring straight bangers
Whenever I saw Ronald play he sort of played as a half-back, he often pushed forward to the midfield leaving two defenders to cover at all times, besides his defensive qualities Koeman probably was one of the best long range shooter I have ever seen, I will never forget that goal he scored from midfield against FC Porto, I was left stupefied.
Due to his qualities he was given more freedom on the pitch than other defenders would have, sometimes playing for extended periods of time as defensive midfielder while getting someone to cover his natural position.
Rightfully so!
I love how this is a video about a defender and I don't think goals conceded or clean sheets were mentioned a single time.
