It’s an amazing album, thanks for putting this on YT for everyone to see . Can I suggest the earlier album ‘Lightbulb Sun’ for a similar treatment. It’s another one which is consistently amazing. Although having said that, a poor Porcupine Tree track is something of an oxymoron.
The funny thing about PT is that every album is different genres. This album is probably their most rock/metal. Their older stuff is very Floydian and some poppy. Steven Wilson’s solo stuff you can dive into jazz etc.

Daniel...I'm 63 and never heard of this band until last week...my 32 year old son never heard of them either....how is this possible? I'd describe as Pink Floyd/ Tool/ Megadeth....bought 3 CDs today including this one.
They're a huge and highly respected name among "more recent" prog rock crowds. And Steven Wilson, "the hardest working man in prog" is absolutely one of the biggest names in that bubble. But... it just goes to show the limits of such bubbles, and how easily good music can fail to reach the masses it deserves. I'm glad you finally discovered them :-)
Their drummer Gavin Harrison is amazing. He is now with a group that have been around for a long as Porcupine Tree called "The Pineapple Thief" Their albums are really good but since Gavin joined them [ on 4 studio albums so far + 1 live album & dvd ] he has transformed them into something spectacular. He has also become one of the writers. This group is as close now to Porcupine Tree as any group could get yet with their own personal stamp retaining their own recognizable sound. They have without a doubt filled the gap Porcupine Tree left behind. - Never saw this reaction first time around. I really enjoyed this. Thankyou.
PT is a top 5 GOAT band for me and I am almost 60...and grew up with RUSH, YES, BOSTON, ZEP....! Great choice (But IMHO "In Absentia" and "DeadWing" are both better!) It's ALL good! Lets rock this!!!!
First track and I'm sold! That guitar was amazing! If not for your reaction I'd never find such extraordinary artists! I shall carry on! And Tommy will be phenomenal!! I've never felt so many emotions. Means it did its job!
Awesome, good to hear you felt all the emotions. PT are my favourite band ever and there's many albums for you to delve into, good luck and enjoy the ride!
There's also a 4-track EP called Nil Recurring which continues the 'story' as the songs on it were recorded during the same sessions - well worth a listen.
Daniel, you should check out the Steven Wilson Album ‘Hand Cannot Erase’ . Possibly the pinnacle of Steven Wilson’s genius although tbf the peaks of achievement of this man are so numerous and so high that it’s difficult to tell.
Love this album. Quick note, the whole album is inspired by a novel written by Bret Easton Ellis called Lunar Park, seen from the point of view of the child in the novel (Bret's son) instead of himself (note the novel is kind of autobiographic mixed with fantasy and supernatural). Specifically the song My Ashes is very reminiscent of the last chapter of the book. Highly recommended to anyone who likes this album.
Yes. I I have never read the novel. About the album, I always think it is in the POV of the child so some of it is true and some is not. But the child thinks and feels like it is true. Enough of it is probably true that those things, the prescription drugs and desensitization, and the uncaring family, need to be addressed. It is a wild or over dramatic (maybe) of what is happening with some of the youth today but especially in the '90's and 00's.
First reaction: "sounds like me". Yeah, that was me the whole song when I was 12, in 2007. When it came out and i went to my first PT concert I could really relate, even when my english as a dutch kid was not very good. Even more when I started to understand the lyrics. And then I understood it as culture critisism about what modern youth have to go through, leading to medical diagnoses, medication, existensial crisises, suicide and yeahhhhh stufffff
I adore your reactions, as they let me rediscover my favorite music and listen to it again in a good company. Thanks a lot! As for Porcupine Tree, i highly recommend Signify as one of their most interesting records IMO
Thanks for this reaction 😘 PT is my fav. band and this is my fav. album by them ❤️. Steven Wilson’s solo work is amazing too. Can recommend the album: “Hand.Cannot.Erase.” I think you would love it. Greetings from Denmark 😊
Loved your reaction. Keep listening to this, it gets better the more you know it. This is probably one of my 3 top songs of all time, has it all. Masterpiece.
I agree Daniel. These tracks from Fear of a Blank Planet is very very dark. This album being dark to me, makes a great listening experience. Damn. Straight. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I can’t thank you enough for introducing US to Porcupine Tree! They’re out of this world!
Opening riff of “ Sleep Together” is wicked! Then the vocal distortion is heavy, sic & wicked. This is what I hear. The boy is miserable and hates his life. A girl he knows is unhappy and wants to quit and leave this Earth. The unhappy girl liked him for quite some time and she likes the attention he’s giving her. He might have told this girl she’s pretty and they may have kissed once. The girl develops strong feelings for the boy. She wants to get physical with this boy. He tells her in secret “I’m miserable”. You’re miserable. Let’s sleep together and die in my bed. She falls deeply in love with him and doesn’t care anymore about her life. “Sleep Together “ is so haunting vocally and musically. VeryDark! Sounds like a murder, suicide.
just wanted to point out that the live Tilburg versions of this are noticeably better... and yep, a GOAT band. Very early work (The Sky Moves Sideways) like PF Meddle but a bit slower, plus is all new material. Worth a listen. As is The Pinapple Thieif if you want modern works at this level. Recommend TPT's All the Wars (don't know if Gavin Harrison on that tho).
@@Yosef1952 Well... I made it through the first track without ditching. But while the vocals are good, this is way heavier than I typically listen to. I may need to listen in bursts, so I don't just totally bail.

I wish more people would do full album reactions. All the best music is elevated to an even higher level with the added context. I feel you would also really be into a band named The Dear Hunter. They have a 5 album concept series that go by the Titles Act I - V. It is a must listen if you are into this kind of more detailed music. Even if you don't get enough recommendations to react to it, you shouldn't deprive yourself of it.
I'm sure someone below probably mentioned this, but just in case: the guitar solo at the 4:00 mark of Anesthetize is Alex Lifeson of Rush. ALL of the guys in Rush thought / think that Porcupine was/is the shit. The story is that Alex Lifeson was so taken by the band, that he called up Steven Wilson at the time this album was being recorded and ASKED Steven Wilson if he could do a guitar solo for one of his songs, and so he did the guitar solo on Anesthetize. Also, Gavin Harrison (the drummer for PTree, and now playing with both The Pineapple Thief AND King Crimson) was good friends with Neil Peart. And they both had a healthy respect for each other, in addition to being friends.
