    To complicate things more, I think “red meat” as a blanket term is insufficient. The quality of red meat varies *immensely*. Commercial agriculture meats are riddled with antibiotics, preservatives, stress hormones and other garbage I don’t even know about. A proper randomized / controlled analysis would test the quality of meats and control for this as well.

    • @christiansta2771
      @christiansta2771 Год назад +1

      Also, most red meat eaters also eat a lot of processed meats which could be a bigger issue as well.

      Falling oestrogen levels cause fat to be redistributed to the abdomen causing a thickening waistline but most studies show that weight gain at menopause is due to becoming more sedentary, allowing muscle mass to decrease which then causes a fall in metabolic rate. You either need to build up muscle with resistance training or eat less, particularly carbs and sugar.

    I'd wonder if that McDonald's experiment would have the same results with eating only a boiled chicken breast with brown rice and a potato for 10 days (i.e. one could then hypothesize whether the gut microbe diversity reduction is due to a lack of diversity in the fiber being consumed rather than on the degree to which the food is processed, cooking method, etc.).

    Correlation is not causation. There are so many theories about obesity and since it is such a recent phenomenon and is not well understood but I am not convinced by this theory on micro biome. Why did this micro biome effect only start in the 1970s ? All he is really saying is that there may be an impact of the micro biome on how many calories are metabolised when they are controlled because in the end it’s physics not biology- it’s energy balance. There is no such thing as a fat busting microbe.

      Well you could give keto a try. It's not for everyone (but works great for me). Basically cut out carbohydrates as much as you can (up to 20g a day is OK). You still need to eat of course, eat as much as you want of fish, meat, cream, eggs, cheese, any seafood and mushrooms but no sugar and no starch. It will take a month for your body to switch to being a fat burner. You will lose weight, never be hungry, stop snoring and end tooth decay but only if you can stick to very low carbs (try it for a couple of months, then decide if it's right for you). Good luck.
      Edit: no potatoes, no rice, no orange juice etc since the first two are starch and the third has fructose i.e. a sugar.

      Yeah unfortunately there's quite a few people that jumped on the probiotic foods bandwagon and found it actually made them worse. It could be related to the wrong combo of bacteria for your existing microbiome, or histamine intolerance, or FODMAPS issues. Etc. Certain probiotic foods are for everyone, and also the high amount of lactic acid can attack your tooth enamel and do weird things to cellular metabolism

  • @marcdraco2189
    @marcdraco2189 4 года назад +13

    The artificial sweeteners remark really interested me. I use a lot (aspartame, acesulfane potassium) and I've no problem with my weight (yet) although I have lost a huge amount since my divorce about 10 years back. I switched my diet from junk an comfort food (being miserable) to something more diverse but cheaper, with an emphasis on fibre intake (porridge, brown bread, etc.) but I can't usually manage the amount of fruit I would like because it's simply too expensive. Frozen veggies are the next best thing (price wise). I also don't shower as much as I used to or use harsh soaps. This change has seen a marked improvement in my physical health. (*I joke that I stink so no one comes near me any more, although the opposite is true because I keep the stinky bits clean and polished!) Too many variables to pin it to one thing but nonetheless there's something in this. I'd like to dump the aspartame if possible but it "feeds" my sweet tooth and the others just make me feel rancid.

      Hey Marc, You might try switching to stevia. If it has added monkfruit, the taste is better. It is an adjustment, but far healthier than aspartame. A continuous blood glucose monitor might help you to identify whether sugar substitutes raise your insulin.

    • @marcdraco2189
      @marcdraco2189 3 года назад

      @@webaccess11 I don't care for the taste of rebsaudiosides, they have a nasty aftertaste and aspartame isn't unhealthy unless you listen to people with agendas who should know better like Mercola. Amino acids are perfectly natural and aspartame is just two bound together. I'll look out the Monkfruit though.

      @@webaccess11 I agree, but the idea that nature doesn't mess with nature is rather quaint too (if completely wrong). Aspartame only got a bad name through Monsanto and the association with Agent Orange. It was created and discovered by complete accident by a chemist doing something else and (it's said, licking is finger).
      But with the canonical example, GMO, nature beat us by millennia. Even the humble sweet potato contains DNA fragments inserted by agrobacterium. If you're on Twitter, look up Drunk Phytologist, one of the few people left still studying this fascinating organism. A completely natural GMO machine!

    20 to 30 grams of fibre a day is recommended by Tim Spector in this video. I take 5g of psyllium husks per day because if I don't my stools are far too hard. That stuff can be dangerous if taken to excess so I won't make up any shortfall in fibre by consuming much more of it than I already do. But is that fibre helping to feed my microbiome (as far as I'm aware that fibre passes through undigested) ? I keep to a fairly strict keto diet so I don't get 20g of fibre a day, maybe 10g (most winter days I'll eat a couple of small Brussel Sprouts and a couple of small cherry tomatoes with my large breakfast steak, probably I'll eat a few pecan nuts through the rest of the day). Just the one meal a day unless I see my girl friend that day when we may get lunch and or dinner together.
    So two questions (i) bearing in mind that psyllium husks supposedly pass through undigested are they in any way helping to feed my microbiome and (ii) what other fibre sources should I consume that will not kick me out of ketosis i.e. keep me at less than 20g of carbohydrates a day ? Anybody like to help me here (I don't want to give up on keto, it has worked great for me for the last couple of years) ?

    • @marcdraco2189
      @marcdraco2189 3 года назад

      HPV is viral, carried by men where it occasionally causes warts and penile cancer. Virgins (like nuns) never suffer from it and it's believed (though you'd have to check) that if you leave it until your early 20s before having unprotected sex, that the cervix will be sufficiently "hardened" to reduce or even eliminate the risk of a papiloma virus causing damage which leads to cancer.
      The younger you're exposed to the virus (and since several types can cause it) the more sexual partners you have, the greater your risk of developing the disease in later life.
