    It's been over FOUR MONTHS since I released PART 1. Now it's time to update you on what happened when I followed my ZOE personalized food recommendations - based on my individual gut microbiome health, blood sugar and blood fat responses.

      Any idea if this is going to be available in South Yorkshire any time soon? Also as a coeliac/dairy intolerant doctor, am wondering if the home testing kit is suitable anyway? (Gemma mentions no adjustment for dietary allergies...)

      I loved so much about Zoe in the beginning, but that was two years ago. Now I keep getting recurring charges over and over,. Has anyone else had this issue?     Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your child! Thank you for a great and thorough review. I’ve just signed up for Zoe. I noticed the glow in your skin when you came back after a few weeks on Zoe. I am pleased to hear that nest is not necessarily off limits. I do hope they provide a follow up gut health test after a while on the program.

    Thank you so much for the dedication to doing this. I'm starting more towards a personalized medicine approach and feel it's overwhelming, but comprehensive first person accounts of all of this are really helpful to figuring things out. I'm not located in a place where it's available, but I will definitely see if and when that's happening and you have a new subscriber because of the strength of this video.     Very even handed review - I am into the second month into Zoe app and have more negatives than positives: the app is sooo time consuming, the chat support does not respond, and the results of all the testing are nowhere to be seen. So far it was interesting and insightful to see my blood sugar reactions, the muffins were truly disgusting and, yes, I have lost some weight as I have removed a lot of carbs from my diet.

It's funny you say you've removed a lot of carbs because I felt I actually added more carbs when doing the ZOE program (all those beans, legumes and lentils!) but maybe my previous nutrition was naturally a bit lower in overall carbs compared to the average diet. Do you think you'll keep going with the app?

      @@HealthHackers I will give it another month, probably. I am really puzzled by some of the food scores in relation to my results and I find it very frustrating to log my meals as a lot of items that I eat are not there (unprocessed, simple foods like curd cheese). I also find that their calories count cannot be accurate as I seem to survive on 800 kcal per day! I also have a problem with some of the foods that are recommended for me from the environmental point of view e.g. avocado or peanut butter (all this palm oil). So, I would love to be able to question the criteria on which they have chosen certain foods for me and I have asked to be passed on to a coach, so watch this space! I hope your pregnancy is going well and the nausea is getting better. Best wishes and good luck!

    I heard recently that how we sleep can affect your blood sugar response to food, so I’m guessing potentially someone could eat the exact same food, let’s say breakfast at the same time 2 days running but depending on sleep quality the night before, the blood sugar response could be different. Don’t know if it’s the same for blood fats. So a “good” food may not always be as good for you depending on how you slept. Having listened to Prof Tim Spector many times it’s clear the gut microbiome is very important for health & I now try to have 30+ plant species in my diet weekly, much easier to do than I imagined! If my husband & I (both 60+) did the Zoe kit we’d probably have very different outcomes which would mean having to have different food in our meals, which as the food preparer (I stop short of saying cook) I can say wouldn’t be happening!! But anyway I really couldn’t be doing with all that weighing & scanning so it’s not for me. All very fascinating stuff though.

    I also think the only way to really know if Zoey way of eating is working would be another poop test after a certain period, if not at the end of 2 the test period. At least it could be offered separately. BUT MORE THAN A YEAR LATER there is no repeat poop test!
    I have been using a health app for losing weight which also asks to record amd measure every mouthful: i have found it often impossible, because I share meals with my friend who often does the cooking, and he won't start measuring all the ingredients. I also often forget to measure the food myself when I start cooking, say, vegetable soup or salad (two of my favourite foods) and then again my portion every time I help myself to it . Eating out will open another can of worms!
    Measuring portions has been helpful to learn how much a 20 grams of almonds and 20 g of broccoli look like, but for long-term, measuring everything sounds to me like an unhealthy obsession. I don't think any kind of ridig,ritualistic eating is good for you if even minor deviation ffrom it causes psychological discomfort.

      A second poop test would be interesting! And I see what you’re saying about the logging. I imagine someone could use the app for a while and then once they’ve learnt what appears to score highly for them and work well for their body, they could maintain balance in their own way without rigid logging😊

    Very good assessment of Zoe 2. I completed the Zoe 2 programme back in August and found the same flaws. The recommended foods set my IBS off, ie beans pulses and unpasteurized cheeses plus sauerkraut. Of course the small print tells you it " cannot diagnose or treat any medical conditions", it should have included " might even worsen some". I continue to monitor weight and test my blood sugars with the standard finger prick tests and have seen no discernable weight loss or fall in blood sugar spikes dispite emphasising Zoe 2 food combinations.

      Thanks I suspected that this might be an expensive research product that doesn’t take other sensitivities into account. Not bashing it, I’m a scientist, recognising the limitations.

      Hi there. I’m not a scientist but I realised the ZOE experiment was not for me since I have had years and years of living with IBS. Now totally free of IBS symptoms by eating a low fibre, low carb diet with no processed foods . I know I am n=1 but living without inflammation is the best health marker for me.

    Seems 5hat Zoe assumes that we all eat prcessed packaged food with the bar code scanner. I was always told to avoid nearly everything in a packet & just 3at real wholefood.

    Thanks for the informative video! I've done all the testing and am about to start the plan. I'm also nut allergic, so the 'snack' section of the app makes very sad reading LOL - you're right, it is a little odd they don't take any account of allergies.

    Congrats. Important factor is price. £30 per month That will eliminate a lot of clients which could influence a study based on those in the higher socio-economic groups. Price of Foods suggested - are they easily obtainable and in low/high price range? This could be another economic cost.

    A Brilliant and informative review of the new Zoe Test. The issues you have raised are probably the same that I would have asked about. I’ve registered my interest in taking the test on the Zoe website. Hopefully when it’s FINALLY released in the UK these issues will have been resolved.     Thanks for the great review Gemma. Just wondering if you will go back on the Zoe Plan again when it's convenient for you to do so. If so, perhaps you might ask Prof. Spectre, what effect the ZOE Plan has on diseases, like joint disorders, skin conditions, hair loss etc. It would be wonderful to think that it would have a positive impact. I like the idea of being able to identify the foods that are good or bad and the effect it's having so that the plan can be tweaked accordingly.

    Thanks for doing this. I thought about joining Zoe but it was too expensive and seemed to have too much rigamarole involved. I'm following Dr Wm Li's Eat to Beat Disease plan, which is similar but easy. For instance, I eat kiwis w/a little bit of the skin to jumpstart my microbiome improvement, but there is nothing to write down. I seem to be more like your husband in that regard.

    It's important to note that we are all subject to liminal thinking, and that this area of research is still in its infancy. Much more to come. In nutrition and health, there are few absolutes, but many, man, MANY marketers and research industries who need to make a living. Taking it all with a grain of salt, pun intended😊

    Love your scientific approach and review. I'm going to give it a go, and like you, try it for 6 months. I believe you can now pay an additional amount for your next poo test. Let's see if it helps. I love learning and if it helps me physically, it's a bonus.

    I was very disapointed to see ZOE recommendations for me to eat Tilapia (farmraised fish) and canola oil (highly inflammatory oil) I thought ZOE is about healthy food and habits. I don't follow ZOE after this, money waisted.

      Stop spreading misinformation, canola oil isn’t highly inflammatory. It just has a higher omega6 to omega3 ratio but since you don’t drink a bottle daily that doesn’t have negative health effects

    thank you for such a thorough review! i've been considering trying zoe out mainly because of the gut biome analysis... this was helpful to see.
    just wanted to share some insight re: why it might still be good for you to eat apple and kiwi (and how) even though they could increase your blood sugar. basically yes, if eaten alone they might not be good for your blood sugar (though the fiber in them would help), but really, those foods should be eaten along with and/or after eating foods higher in protein and fat, as that will slow down the rate of glucose uptake from the fruits.
    this is, for example, why in many traditional diets, fruits are only consumed at the end of a meal as a dessert. i was diagnosed as prediabetic over a decade ago (and by checking my blood glucose constantly and figuring out what foods and food combos worked for me, am no longer) and this is how i eat fruit. in fact i'll even put a bit of sour cream of a dab of heavy cream on top because the fat helps with absorbing some of the fat-soluble nutrients in fruit.

      Yes, fully agree with you on pairing fruits with proteins to create a slower release of energy and thus help prevent a blood sugar spike. What I found confusing was that eating a kiwi, apple etc by itself (NOT with any protein or fat) still scored highly for me on the ZOE app, when the blood sugar response prediction was ranked as “bad.” I understand now that ZOE sees the gut health benefits as too good to skip by avoiding these fruits altogether. I now regularly eat more fruit than I used to for that reason. 😊

    I think the testing is worthwhile because in Britain it is not easy to find comprehensive testing. We cannot get GPS to conduct all these tests and outside London it is not easy to find private testing.

    Great video.
    I suppose with the unhealthy diets we are used to in the UK and the US, a personalised diet would benefit most people. Understanding why cheaper (normal?) foods are unhealthy and why we continue to eat them would be good to know too.

    PS if you ever find a low calorie lager that needs testing, I may know a potential volunteer.

      You don't need any personalized nonsense. Just eat the evolutionary appropriate diet which is meat and animal fat.

    Great to watch this, a nice balanced view. I’m 3 months in and while the advice is largely common sense I have made changes I perhaps never would have. The best example is breakfast; swapping out Weetabix cereal, milk and raisins for Greek Yoghurt, museli and fresh berries!

    Great Review and you have answered one of my questions about 'good' foods being at the same time 'bad for blood sugar control' However - here's my question for your followers. I've just got my results back and it seems they either lost the bood fat sample or it was unanalysable. They say they have predicted my blood fat response using AI and 2000 other people like me 🤔 ... But I don't think I want to take the next step unless I have a definitive result for blood fat. What do people think?

      Yes, I had the same experience and after two months recording all my meals I've finally become very disillusioned with the whole process, because my scores are constantly marked down because of blood fat warnings. My wife, who's following the programme too, never gets blood fat warnings on the other hand! Her blood sample was used by Zoe whereas mine wasn't. It seems Zoe have decided on an arbitrary limit for my blood fat which is in no way personalised and which doesn't reflect my body's actual responses. As a result I feel I am always being penalised for no good reason and cannot improve my overall scores to more than about 62 per day. Disappointing. (I should add that most of the time my fats are 'good fats' too.)

      ​@jonathandean7245 yes, I can't help but feel there is some underlying nutritional premises/assumptions of what is good and bad. I've never seen them acknowledge that some folks really don't tolerate veg or legumes or that some folks improve their health eating more meat. Just never considered.

      @@cassieoz1702 Most people who feel better eating more meat are dealing with major gut biome issues. Eating meat avoids triggering flare-ups but does not solve the problems, and meanwhile there are lots of negative effects, especially long term, of eating too much meat. A better solution for such folks is to get detailed gut testing and a doctor-based program to restore the gut biome. Such programs typically include a phase of reducing the bad bacteria through natural or pharmaceutical antibiotics followed by a phase of building up/diversifying the gut biome.

    Great review, you answered a lot of questions ive been asking myself after watching hours of these podcasts on Zoe. Always a little skeptical of any diet plan when they profit from it. I also store iron so have to give blood to reduce this, Im assuming the food they recommend is full of iron. The bit I didnt like was when Tim said exercise doesnt reduce weight, really find that a dangerous and incorrect thing to say. Thanks

      It's clear that exercise contributes to long term health. However, research does suggest that exercise does not help (most) people lose weight. Tim Spector is a scientist: he looks at the science. If people want to lose weight, they have to take care of what they eat. For most people: more exercise results in more appetite, so they eat more. Also: calculations on calorie burning make it clear that it takes a whole lot of exercise to burn off the calories in many common foods.

      @@k.h.6991 Yes i know its probably 80% diet but the argument the more you exercise the more you eat is obviously not going to work. If you eat the same after exercise and actually put some effort into it you will burn calories ,lots of them, and im not trying to sell a book, or diet plan, or podcast. I like the Zoe project but that doesnt mean it works for everyone, I did my own project and I can assure you exercise helps weight loss! :-)

    I am curious how much the dietary recommendations for your husband differed from your own? I’m interested in trying Zoe, but have a lingering fear that it will return a pretty generic prescription of “more vegetables, less meat”. I’m sure it is valuable to see your body’s unique responses, but I wonder if the dietary advice really does feel personalized as well?

    Sorry, I might have missed it, did you continue to wear the CGM for any length of time? I am wondering how my (perimenopausal) roller coaster hormones will affect any glucose control results over the course of a month, not on one single day during the initial testing period.

      You can buy another one quite readily (just not from Zoe) if you want to monitor for longer. I've not done Zoe but I feel like I would want to use one for longer than two weeks as well. In fact I'm wondering whether to do just the CGM and not Zoe at all!

      @@ninetynineowls Thanks for your reply. In fact, that's what I did. I bought a regular diabetes one. (freestyle Libre) £50 or something. Fascinating. Many fluctuations brought on by peri/menopausal hormones in addition to anything I was eating, not eating/exercise, etc. I take HRT and take progesterone for around two weeks during the month - I take it at night, 2 hours after food. And I get the biggest spike just from taking that alone!
      I got in touch with Zoe, and they replied that it is something they are aware of. Monitoring glucose affected by female hormones for two weeks will reveal misleading results.. Clearly not best science - as the hormones have opposing effects on glucose during 28 day cycle. Zoe said it was something they are looking into.

    Not for me. Hugely expensive. I would be interested in some of the testing, but I'm highly sensitive to many foods and am already on a very low carb diet. I have autoimmune issues that includes gut issues if not careful (previous infectious colitis) too much fibre would finish me off!😂
    Also...where does all that data go?

      I think so but 1 month would have sufficed! I used to think Keto was good for me but discovered I have a poor response to fat so clearly Keto is not a good idea in the long term and I've had to change my diet to a lower fat more plant based one with occasional lean meat/ fish.

    I watch Zoe podcasts all the time, they're very informative, I've learned a lot from them, although I haven't subscribed to the test because it seems rather expensive so I just try to eat a good balanced diet and LEAVE Off the ultra processed stuff, I also watch Dr. Robert Lustig, he's so fascinating and knowledgable

    You dont specify on the muffins - did you scoff three per meal? Plus the website in the UK is really misleading - it doesnt tell you the kits still arent available EIGHT months after Timmy Speccy made a video taking delivery of his consignment.
    Also does the kit include a cont blood glucose monitor? I might just get one of those instead.

      Hi Harry - The initial challenges are three muffins for breakfast, then two at lunchtime. The muffins are specially designed to mimic meals, so are balanced differently. the lunchtime ones are higher fat. It is only for the day of the testing challenge. They were pretty grim (in my opinion) but did the job. The kit contains a wearable glucose monitor which is worn for about 2 weeks.

    Thanks for the video! Before watching your video, I almost bought a kit. However when I saw the ingredients of the muffin though, it was a no for me. Blood spikes can reek all sorts of havoc in the heart, etc.
    It doesn’t make sense to my brain to eat a diabetic causing muffin multiple times in a sitting, and for breakfast and lunch. No way! One muffin alone will spike any diabetics blood sugar. And we’re expected to do that how many times in a day? No thank you!
    Who doesn’t know that a plant-based diet is healthy for everyone including diabetics.
    I eat three apples to start my day off every day, and it literally reversed prediabetes. I don’t need an app to tell me that apples are good for my microbiome.
    Likewise I already know that my body takes a hit whenever I eat red meat. I’m so glad you made this video. I’m no longer curious.

      I think you are being unfair calling this a scam, it is one of the very few programmes which has been created by the science teams and is backed up by solid research, they are not funded by the food industry. You are of course entitled to your opinion. I think you are probably correct to not give it a try if eating a small quantity of muffins is such an issue for you. They are eaten for a specific purpose - to measure your body’s response to fat and sugar, and to give you accurate data. For many people that wouldn’t be an issue, because the benefit of having a highly tailored report outweighs any shortterm ‘damage’ eating a few muffins might have. Given the litigious nature of the US - i’m sure no harm would come to anyone eating a small quantity of these foods 😂

      Again, for diabetics eating one ☝️ of those muffins would skyrocket our blood 🩸 sugar! Millions of ppl have this chronic disease 🦠. So when you say “many people”… that’s not correct. On the contrary, many people will have dangerous spikes eating those muffins.
      Likewise, many people who are pre-diabetic and diabetic don’t even know it, eating those muffins multiple times in a day is dangerous for this population.
      Moreover, there should be a disclaimer. Not everyone is gonna look at the ingredients like I did… To identify the quantity of carbohydrate, and sugar in that lab 🧪 muffin.
      The amount of carbohydrates in one ☝️ muffin is more than two meals of carbohydrates.
      And you want us to do what? Eat three of them for breakfast? And three for lunch?
      So you want us to eat only sugar, salt, and unhealthy fat for breakfast and nothing else to balance it out; no healthy fats, no healthy protein, and no fiber (they couldn’t even add a decent amount of fiber/ 4 g of fiber per serving) to balance the plate, in order to prevent a crazy spike?
      Regarding the ingredients, the amount of salt in just two muffins is the maximum daily amount that an individual should have in a whole day. Yet this program is designed for someone to eat six of these muffins in the same day? That’s 3600 mg of salt 🧂 😯!
      Unnecessary high blood pressure spikes, and heart issues just waiting to happen!
      Then you want us to do it again? For lunch?
      Yeah no thanks!

      Cant reply to your reply ! I take your point about diabetics, might be worth contacting Zoe team and ask them to clarify. For the rest though, its not like Zoe want you to eat these muffins every day - it is for one single day. We all (well the vast majority) have days (thanksgiving/christmas etc) where we eat more salt, sugar and fat than we ought to, so to do so for one day so our body’s reaction to it can be monitored does not seem unreasonable. Like if you have an X ray you are bombarded with low dose radioactive - they dont advocate you do this on a daily basis that would not be healthy😂

    Thanks for a great professional review of Zoe. I'm sure that Tim Spector's science is totally trustworthy, I heard him recently as a guest on Dr Michael Mosely's podcast, "Just One Thing" on BBC Sounds. However I won't be participating in Zoe because I have to be totally honest with myself and just know that as a single man living alone, I just won't be able to provide the dedication and commitment to all that measuring out and recording, however beneficial it would be to my health. Most of all, I just can't justify the membership of £60 per month, yes there are lower cost options but what and why are you missing out just because you choose a cheaper membership level ?

    my impression is that this system is very complex and a big headache to follow, it seems to border on obsessive and time consuming details that will cause you to keep second guessing and even spiral down into unhappiness after apparent "failure"

      Nope - it's actually easy to follow. I'm on Month 5 in the UK and deciding if I need to continue. I've learnt a lot so this is why I'm considering it. Like most things, you have to invest the time to get the personalised results. If you can't be bothered , then that might tell you something else :)

    I wouldn't touch Zoe for a few reasons, one being the fallacious claim that probiotic microbes which cannot survive pasteurization can survive the human digestive system. Spector also advocates high dairy consumption despite A1 cow milk being implicated in health issues. Zoe is also meat phobic which shows criminal disregard for the health improvements many have found on carnivore / primal / paleo diets.

      My exact reasons why I wouldn’t ever trust ZOE. Myself and thousands of others have discovered the diet that cures inflammation which is low carb or even carnivore. Zoe can’t go there because of it’s bias towards vegetarianism

    I thought the review was fair and interesting. Only the title, I felt was misleading. It implies the reviewer quit because a problem / dissatisfaction with Zoe when it was because she was pregnant. So no fault of Zoe's!I felt that was a bit clickbaitey.

    At 17:13 you show an email reponse from Zoe which included the clause "...they are also nourishing the good bugs in the gut.". You should smell snake oil here. There is no such thing as "nourishing" the goood bugs. It has no meaning and is used to con and defraud the punters.
    I also very much doubt that they really use artificial intelligence to work out your personalised diet, another con? If they do not take account of allergies, you've got to wonder just how much of a con Zoe actually is.

    Eating saturated fat is NOT inflammatory because it supplies ESSENTIAL fatty acids. Note there are no essential carbs that your body requires since it can make whatever glucose it needs. Protein from quality meats is also an essential nutrient your body needs and is NOT inflammatory either. However eating processed seed oils IS inflammatory, therefore stick to Olive, Avocado and Coconut oils or butter instead when adding fats if also eating lean cuts of meat.
    You don't mention any particular health or metabolic disorders that you are battling. So in the absence of that I suppose this could be a decent regular diet - but why do you need to pay for that advice? Your microbiome will adjust just fine to whatever your whole food diet provides. Personally I am wary of any 'science' that has a bias to sell you something you probably don't even need...

      I'm half way through this, utterly confused by it and driven mad trying to enter all the plants I do eat. I've been wfpb vegan for 7 years and lifetime veggie but it still had me very poor on blood sugar response and very poor on blood fat response and I'm trying to figure out why and probably annoying the heck out of the chat bot/ nutrionist staff with questions.
