SYNOPSIS:
Brothers Dean and Sam follow in their father's footsteps and set out to eliminate monsters, demons and other supernatural entities that exist on Earth. What happened to Sam during the months Dean was dead? During the search for a girl named Anna Milton, who has a mysterious connection to angels, Sam reveals the astonishing events of the summer.

This one answered to some fan anger about the possibility of Sam sleeping with Ruby (a demon) and I really liked getting the way they did it, it made sense for the characters. I am full of questions on Alistair/Anna and the angels. Look forward to more.

Though I don't quite agree with your opinion on the change in actresses, however, I do agree that the characterization you mentioned of both actresses fits in the context of the change in characterizations for Ruby in S3 and S4.
I saw in your Patreon you've finished the season already and you are at the gag reel. So, if you don't mind spoilers in this channel, I can get into my takeaways, since we need to see Ruby for the whole season to appreciate the difference in her.
*(Spoilers alert for the rest of the season)*
Hindsight being what it is, we can look back on the season 3 episodes' Ruby as played by Katie Cassidy, we can see the little pushes and digs. She plays into Sam's needs and wants, his secret insecurities, and his need to prove himself by saving Dean.
Katie's Ruby creates the image of a tough-as-nails hunter type because that is what Sam will respond to in his need in savior mode. She also has Dean to deal with, Dean who despises demons and won't give her any time of day. Therefore she needs to be brash and full-on aggression and never-take-any-shit action person for when Dean counteracts her.
Ruby played by Genevieve had a gentler edge to her, a seductive ally. This is what she needs to do in order to push past Sam's grief and guilt over Dean's death. She is dealing with a different Sam who has no Dean to watch over him, to deal with. Gen even played her as if she's a little bit in love with Sam in an interview for "I Know What You Did Last Summer" PR release. And in Kripke's commentary in Lucifer Rising, he corroborated that feelings.
Then when Dean comes back from hell, she praises Sam to build up his hubris that only he can avenge Dean's death and save the world at the same time. She vows she doesn't want to come between them, but subtly belittles and undermines everything that Dean stands for.
The choice of differing characterization is intentional and fits the narrative purposes of this arc, unfortunately, most fans didn't pick up on it, and Gen endured the backlash.
The fact that it was 1am for me too watching this reaction😂

I really like this episode. They establish clearly that the body Ruby is inhabiting was empty when she entered it so there aren’t consent issues of Sam having sex with her in someone else’s body. I love that Sera Gamble, writer of this episode, chose to have an 'ethically sourced' vessel for Ruby, because of the non-consent ramifications. She was the one who pointed out that Ruby needed to be in an empty vessel in order to avoid consent issues. Apparently, Singer/Kripke etc. didn't want to bother and thought it would be a waste of time to show her possessing an empty vessel though. I’ve always appreciated that she was in an empty vessel, although it means that Sam was a necrophiliac, lol ...
Well, here’s a snippet of an interview with Sera Gamble, writer of that episode about that issue:
Q: I need to take a few sentences to gush over “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” The script was gorgeous, as was Jared’s performance of Sam at his absolute lowest point. You gave him some outstanding material to work with. Out of all your scripts, that so far is my favorite. Having said that, did the ridiculous fan debate about Sam being a rapist prompt you to give Ruby an empty shell to inhabit (great line, by the way, “Al Gore would be proud”) or was that the plan all along?
SG: We started work on the episode before any debate began that I know of, so none of it was a reaction. But we did know that Sam having sex with a demon would be provocative. Actually, I was very excited to work on the episode. People do a lot of otherwise unthinkable things when they’re grieving. Who doesn’t want to write the episode where a character they’ve worked on for 70 episodes does stuff he’d otherwise never do?
But anyway, the state of Ruby’s body was the subject of much conversation, mostly because I couldn’t shut up about it. I just couldn’t get past the rape thing. I think I actually disappointed some people I work with, who thought I’d be tougher or darker or something. Or possibly just didn’t care as much as I did one way or another. But I took a lot of writers’ room time talking about it. And ultimately took the long way around so I could get her into a vaguely more morally acceptable body. I readily admit it’s rather silly, and the mechanics are contrived - that’s why I leaned into the joke so much.

The fan debate on Sam being a rapist was referring to the scene in Lazarus Rising when Ruby opened the door to Dean and Bobby in her underwear. They were obviously not “roommate”, and the scene was hinting at Sam sleeping with Ruby while she was possessing someone.
Not crazy about the new Ruby either.
Definitely prefer Katie Cassidy but hey, at least Jared got a wife out of it😂
