As one of Bob Moch's grandson's i am incredibly proud to see this incredible, seemingly impossible story come to life on the screen... My grandfather told me this story many times when I was still a child and the full impact of it never really hit me until I saw this film for the first time. Again i want to thank Jenn Gibbons of the George Pocock Foundation for finding an advance ticket for me on December 12th. This story doesnt just tug at the heartstrings... It instills pride in an amazing group of men that beat all of the odds. I was able to take my adult children to see the film last night and all three of us where moved to tears at almost every moment in the film... In closing I genuinely hope that everyone is moved as much as I have been...
My Father was on the rowing team of the University of Washington during 1940’s. I heard how hard they worked and have pictures which showed him with a body builder physique. This movie is a must for me and my family!
I hope people come out in droves for this movie! You're right: uplifting story, AMAZING music choice, this movie looks like it deserves to be seen on the big screen.
My Grandfather rowed for UW in the late 20s. The 1929 photo in the front of the book of the team members sawing a large log has my grandfather, Gail W Burleigh, in it. At Grandpa Burleigh’s funeral, his 3rd son, said he was most proud of his rowing for UW. He was a a dry land boy, very poor, but played defensive end for football in high school and a short time for UW. However, he couldn’t stay in college and had to return to Great Falls to help his single mother pay bills. He was a husband, father to 4 sons, and a cattle rancher in MT the rest of his life. He also helped fight the MannGulch fire of 1949 since he owned the Beartooth ranch close to where to smoke jumpers died. Looking forward to this movie, Susan
As a former high school rower, I'm excited to see the sport highlighted on the global stage. It was the hardest and most fulfilling thing I ever did, and taught me work ethic and passion for everything I do, even 35 years later.

My daughter rowed on the coed club team at Clemson University. I read the book soon after she joined the team. What these athletes go through during training and racing is incredible. My daughter's crews were successful, medaling in 17 races over 8 semesters.
Based on a true story. I watched a special done by PBS about these young men and their coach. Remarkable story. They were incredible. All the obstacles that were put in their way yet they still managed to overcome each one. That documentary was fantastic and I still think about it. I had no idea they'd made a movie out of it. The trailer looks good. I hope George Clooney does this story and those who lived it along with their families, justice. I'll keep my fingers crossed when I go see it.

I was a singles' sculler in one of the very few university programs that offered sculling in the US. I grew up in Seattle and went to the University of Washington, and I loved the book in part for what it told about both during the 1930s. The book in its organization and presentation almost felt like a screenplay so I’ve been envisioning a movie for nearly a decade. One of the best books I ever read, with an intimate look at how difficult times could be, and how the brave and fearless people of our country rose to meet it. That it is true makes it all the more special.
I’m older, and just row on my erg. But I loved the feeling of rowing ever since I sat on an old Concept 2 Model C 30 years ago. Rowing was once followed just as much as baseball or football. I hope this reignites that fervor! The book is fantastic!

As a Gonzaga high school rower I went to the west coast to row. I held an American record as well as was in the midst of Trail Blazers in rowing. Best years of my life and the thrill of winning stotesbury along with many other memories. I was given four copies of the book. The sheer ability to never give up is in everyone
This looks amazing. I read the book, and I really look forward to this! P.S. If anyone seeing this hasn't read the book, but like reading at least a little, you should definitely read it eventually!
Read the book a couple of years ago. Knew zero about rowing and never cared about it. Now I believe it's one of the greatest sports out there and I can't wait to see the movie!
Me too! There were several false starts including one with Kenneth Brannaugh directing. It would have been nice to see college rowers Hugh Laurie or Bradley Cooper involved, but I’m sure Mr Clooney will do a great job dramatizing the story. As a former rower (Henley in 1982 and 2013), I’ve thought it was tímeless and a classic
I was recruited for and rowed on the udub crew team my freshman year back in 2008/2009. I lasted one year. Never thought I could push my body THAT hard, and I had already been doing crew four years prior to that. The thing that I remember standing out the most was the annual triathlon.
I’m so excited for Callum Turner to be a lead in this (mainstream) movie! You may have seen him in Fantastic Beast as the brother but I quite like his other lesser known works. Very talented and so excited for his big break !
I will be watching this movie today. I was the Cockswain for St Joseph's crew team in 1979 - 1981. We then combined schools at the boat house to form the Oakland Strokes team. Alot of early morning practices before school with strength training as well. I am so glad I was a part of it all. Many of memories! ❤
I’ve been waiting for this movie to come out! I can’t wait! After family time on Christmas day, Im going straight to the movies! I love George, Callum and the book. It’s going to be great! Thank you! Stories like this are SO NEEDED in times like these! ❤❤❤
I rowed while at Hertford College, U of Oxford (college second “fun” crew). Got hooked instantly. Then, haven’t rowed for thirty years until finally picking up good old C2 (the legendary Model D) during pandemic. I was barely in shape, struggling to break 11 mins 2.5k. Now, after 3 years, almost 5 million meters later and losing 15 lb, I achieved lifetime best of 7:19 2k and routinely go under 20 mins 5k (my UT1 routine) which I didn't actually manage to do in my twenties. This may not look that impressive for a varsity crew but I am 48, only 5’9”, 145lb. Anyway, as a “rower”, Boys in the boat is truly awe-inspiring in the ways that I think only rowers can fully appreciate. The book is a masterpiece and can't wait to see this movie THIS afternoon🤩
A movie about strong, determined men, sacrificing themselves for the collective good, kissing girls, and eating red meat. I’m amazed this film was allowed to be made.
And the trees! They cut down trees, esp western red cedar. What they got out of that was the best lumber available for those magnificent rowing shells like the “Husky Clipper!”
The kind of feel good films I love and have been longing to watch for a while now. Strength of character persevering and overcoming obstacles. No whining. Simple and great human values. 🙌
I love true, inspirational stories like this! It's amazing what people can accomplish when they are hungry and fighting for their lives! Like the story of the fox and the rabbit; The fox is running for his dinner. The rabbit is running for his life! "A worker’s appetite works for him because his hunger drives him onward." -Proverbs 16:26
When you give men responsibility, a passion, a goal, hard work then you have people staying out of trouble, learning strength and control and teamwork 👍
I dated a women’s crew member when she was on a university team. The training and dedication to the sport and her teammates was amazing. I will definitely watch this movie. The fact that I live in Washington state and have followed their rowing crews for decades has nothing to do with my interest. LOL
Christmas - when the Boys In The Boat film officially opens - is in six days. I lucked into a pre-release screening last night and was knocked out, COMPLETELY knocked out. When a book is as good and deeply layered as BITB, the film that often follows doesn't usually hit those same high notes. This one definitely did and man, I was SO glad. Spoiler alert: there are no space ships or comic book characters in this movie, just fast boats and genuine heroes.
This is an outstanding film that brilliantly captures the world of The Great Depression, rowing and commitment. Set against the 1936 Berlin Olympics, it has the potential to become a future classic akin to "Miracle". As someone who knew nothing about rowing, I was hooked from start to finish. The storytelling and performances make it a riveting cinematic experience, appealing to both sports enthusiasts and those who love a compelling, emotionally resonant story. A must-watch that transcends the sport!
The boys in the boat is a Commendation on the American spirit! Forging forward during the great depression, pulling together as Americans, as a nation and fighting in one of the darkest times in American history! We rose above. Sometimes when you're in, the depths of despair is when you find the deepest push to break out and become what you're meant to be. I love this movie because It's inspirational, and it shows us that in this time, that is not as difficult as the great depression, we still have it in us to rise together, to fight for all that we hold true and to become the greatest nation in the world again.
Excellent Movie! Exceptional writing, directing, acting, cinematography...I was cheering from my seat!! We need more movies produced like this one!! Loved every minute!!
My Father-in-Law rowed for the University of Washington Huskies in the early 1970s. He was also in the Naval ROTC. After graduation his active-duty service was as an assistant crew coach at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. His girlfriend was a Washington cheerleader, who he later married. Now in their 70s, they are still rowing in senior competitive events.
I'm not a rower -- but I'm a graduate of the University of Washington and incredibly proud of our rowing tradition! Now in the UK, I support Cambridge!
I rowed 4 years for the Rutgers Men's Heavyweight Crew (RU RAH RAH). So exciting to see this book come to film. Truly a legendary story for a college crew to reach the absolute highest echelons of rowing so quickly. Badass crew! Nice to see all the other rowers in the comments! Who is ready to hop on an erg??!
I have never been a rower but learned to really appreciate the teamwork that goes into that sport, all I can say is wow what a great movie, I loved it!!!
In the chapter where the book talks about Washington's race against Princeton, it describes Carnegie Lake in detail. I kayak in that lake frequently and the description exactly fits what the lake is still like 100 years later. I think that was filmed on location, so I can't wait to see it. And as a very competitive dragon boat racer, I can identify with the team. I'll be one of the first people to see it.
Bob I think the rowing scenes were all filmed in the U.K. My friend plays Shorty Hunt and I’m pretty sure it was mostly shot here. I know the station scenes were shot at Kings Cross London too! They spent a large part of Spring 22 training on the Thames
@@simonlewis8507 That's so cool! Tell Bruce I said he did a great job, LOL. All the characters were just like I imagined. Sadly, the whole chapter on the Princeton race was omitted from the movie, as was Joe's early life. I guess there was only so much they could squeeze into two and a half hours.
The scene's that are supposed to depict the Montlake Cut where the UW shell house still sits, look nothing like the actual site at the University of Washington. The CG artists at least attempted to show the Montlake Bridge though the scale was horrifically out off with the original.

PBS put out a terrific documentary about these young men. It is so good and inspiring I bought a streaming version rewatching it at least once a year! This looks good too!
Leni Riestenfahl also put some film out about the rowing contests of that Olympics. It's on RUclips.
I'm SO excited to see these amazing people portrayed on the big screen. The trailer gave me chills. I can't wait to see the scenes from history that I've only imagined come to life on the big screen!
Can't wait! The book was outstanding.
100%. Been looking forward to this one.
This is one of my all time favorite books. I’m so stoked that they’re making a movie! I just hope they do it justice.
One of the best books I ever read, with an intimate look at how difficult times could be, and how the brave and fearless people of our country rose to meet it. That it is true makes it all the more special.
these are the kinds of movies we need nowadays
Since I read the book many years ago I always wondered why isn’t there a movie on this fabulous piece of history - it’s about time..
I’m older, and just row on my erg. But I loved the feeling of rowing ever since I sat on an old Concept 2 Model C 30 years ago. Rowing was once followed just as much as baseball or football. I hope this reignites that fervor! The book is fantastic!
This was one of my favorite movies this year. Just a good-old-fashioned inspirational flick. They are very hard to beat!
Dubs and I approve. Doesn't hurt that we tailgate with Rantz's grandson. :) UW Crew is still dominating today! Dad was a Husky, I'm a Husky and my daughter is at the UW now. Go Dawgs!
That is so cool!
I have read and re-read that book at least a half-dozen times. Each time I just can’t put it down. I can’t wait to see the movie.
I've been waiting for this book to be made into a movie. So happy it's finally being done!
I've watched this over 50 times on loop mode. Love it. Can't wait!
Love love love Callum Turner! So excited for this movie. Love the book & the story and I used to live near the UW crew house. Can’t wait!
Just watched this movie today, it was fantastic. Highly recommend. Left with a big smile on my face. Such a good way to start the year.
I’m so excited for Callum Turner to be a lead in this (mainstream) movie! You may have seen him in Fantastic Beast as the brother but I quite like his other lesser known works. Very talented and so excited for his big break !
He’ll be the next Bond
Most emotional and motivational movie I have seen since The King's Speech. I'll see it again. I'll take others.
We got to see this movie tonight as a "Secret Cinema" event and we absolutely LOVED it! I'm going to see it again once it's released. ❤❤
LOL
Robert Moch was coxswain for this team, and he graduated from our small town high school. Our community is very proud of his accomplishments.
The book absolutely changed my life I cannot wait
im not crying, you're crying. Go Dawgs.
Ditto
Thanks to George Clooney we have a wonderful movie: a true story about good human values and triumph over adversity. No woke nonsense.
I’m teary eyed. I already know I would be bawling when I’m finally watching.
I actually row for a top 10 club in the U.S for youth, and I’m stoked for this movie to come out. Hope they did their research!
They did, Daniel brown was all over it and said Clooney got it.
Dubs Up! Best crew program over the last century.
As a UW Alum and walking the same docks these men did years ago while reading the novel...I am so excited for this one.
Absolutely a heroic story which needs to be seen! Read the book first before watching the movie!
Greatest book I’ve ever read. It’s about time it got a movie.
Excellent Movie! Exceptional writing, directing, acting, cinematography...I was cheering from my seat!! We need more movies produced like this one!! Loved every minute!!
Great book! Read it on the plane to London when I rowed in the Henley Masters. Can’t wait to see it.
I literally screamed with joy when I saw the trailer tonight!!!! I am so happy!
I'm not a rower -- but I'm a graduate of the University of Washington and incredibly proud of our rowing tradition! Now in the UK, I support Cambridge!
I read the book and it was so good. I can't wait to see how it is as a movie.
One of the best books I ever read! I hope this movie will be able to do justice to this incredible story!
Who is ready to hop on an erg??!
concept ii at home
I have never been a rower but learned to really appreciate the teamwork that goes into that sport, all I can say is wow what a great movie, I loved it!!!
Watching it for George Clooney's direction
Same
which direction? - this looks like any other triumphant story movie
I’m shocked, haven’t seen a trailer like this in years! Perhaps the tide is turning
Haha Nice Aquaman reference
I rowed my coastal for 24hrs solo unsupported and covered 109km with the last 20k in 1hr at an altitude of 6500ft at Carter Lake in Colorado. I am self tought and self coached.
Absolutely inspiring ,beautifully done film .It brings a sense of pride and honor I havent felt in a lomg while, being born and raised here in Seattle...Always a Husky fan. What a fabulous ,triumphant story
Same with the pride and honor! I missed that feeling and didn’t realize it, till I saw this movie.
Such a great inspiration movie made me emotional, happy and encouraged me too. Kudos for coach , players and every person who had contributed.
I don’t know anything about rowing but I do know I loved that book. Can’t wait for the movie .
OMG !! I just watched this Movie. It is so Powerful. The Actors all gave Powerful performances, our Australian Joel Edgerton gave the most Powerful Portrayal of Coach Ulbrickson. So proud of Joel. Happy Australia Day 26th January 2024.
This was a great book. Hope the movie holds up
Saw it on Chrismas day 2023 !! Amazing & inspiring movie. Welll done Director.
I hope the back story of joe rantz is adequately covered in the movie.
Good timing on the trailer release with Head of the Charles this weekend. 😉
👍
