The Extreme Lengths To Grow Taller: Limb-Lengthening Surgery In India | Undercover Asia

  • An investigation into a growing trend in limb lengthening surgery in India, where certain men and women who believe their heights are ruining their lives, are having operations to grow taller.
The film follows the progress of two men who have the procedure, starting inside the operating theatre as their surgeon breaks their legs before attaching rods, frames and bolts for the lengthening process to begin. It charts their recovery over months as they grow a millimetre at a time before struggling to get back onto their feet.
Undercover Asia also tracks down another young man who was left crippled by limb lengthening surgery and examines why height is so important in Indian society, talking to agents who cast models and actors in Bollywood and women who are on a hunt for prospective life partners.

I got this done when I was 11. I had the fixator on for about 3-4 months. I was born with a physical anomaly and joint infection. My right leg was inches shorter than my left. This would go on to cause me to have severe hip pain, plus a difficulty in being able to walk and stand with ease. My parents took the difficult decision of getting this issue fixed for me. I’m so beyond grateful. I’m now 23 and my legs are of the same length!! I had some other issues too (my knee is damaged and depleted due to the joint infection I had at birth) so I have to do regular physiotherapy etc. That’s a completely separate issue. But the limb lengthening was successful. I’ll be happy to answer any questions on this! 😊 Can’t imagine getting this done for aesthetic purposes though. While I survived it, it was extremely difficult and did cause complications / subsequent surgeries. My parents only took the decision to get this done for me because it was the only option to avoid a life of chronic pain and the inability to walk.

@@Randomperson11121 Hi! They didn’t leave a rod in my bone. They did leave a small clip in my knee to support it. I had to get a minor surgery done after an year or so to get it removed. After removing the fixator, I had a cast for 6 weeks. After getting the cast off, my leg was super sensitive and I had to slowly begin to put some weight on my leg. I think it took me 3-4 months to get back to normal activities COMPLETELY. I did have some pain while things like running (high impact activities) but I don’t think this was due to the lengthening. My knee joint itself was severely damaged due to the septic arthritis I had when I was born. This was unrelated.

I have watched several documentaries about this subject, and noticed that many people who undergo this procedure expect a quick recovery. I mean, both your legs are broken, your bones, tissue, and muscle need time to recover, hopefully without complications. This is not an overnight solution. It's radical and with many chances of complications.

Weeks without being able to walk can be put in perspective when you realize that with hip replacement surgery, they have you up and walking the same day. I've had both my hips replaced and was walking with a frame after just a couple of hours and home that same day each time, so what these people go through is shocking. After the pain of bone-on-bone arthritis, even the trauma of surgery is a reduction of pain.

As someone who is short, I can definitely attest to the sadness that comes with it. It feels like the world is constantly against me just because of my height. No matter what I do, it feels like I will always be at a disadvantage because of my size.
One of the most frustrating things about being short is that it's hard to be taken seriously. People always seem to underestimate me and assume that I'm not as capable or intelligent as someone who is taller. It's like they can't see past my height to the person I am inside.
Finding clothes and other items that fit properly is another constant struggle. It's hard to find jeans that are the right length, or shoes that don't swim on my feet. And forget about trying to find fashionable clothes - it feels like everything is made for taller people, and I'm just left with the scraps.
Being short can also be isolating. It's tough to find friends or romantic partners who are closer to my own height, and I often feel like I don't fit in with groups of taller people. It's like the world is designed for taller people, and I'm just left on the sidelines.
Overall, being short is just a never-ending source of sadness and frustration for me. It feels like no matter what I do, I will always be at a disadvantage because of my height. It's just one more thing that holds me back and makes me feel small and insignificant.

People want to see what they're taught are beauty standards. The skin whitener products are a good example of that. Does someone with lighter skin truly look more attractive or is it something that society made everyone believe? In European countries it is the opposite. Everyone wants to look more tan. A few years back, eyebrows had to be thin lines, now the beauty standards want thick eyesbrows. It's all about what the media promotes. If they show some very good looking smaller men and if they're romantasized some more, then I'm sure eventually this obsession with getting taller will be less common. People don't really have a demand, they'll just follow the next thing that gets hyped up a bit.

I didn't mean to imply that everything is based on the society we live in, but I think it can definitly easily be influenced by it. If they'd just show a couple of smaller men in the media, who are still portrayed as proud, strong and desired, I think it would have a big impact on smaller men and their insecurities about height. Beauty standards don't always have to make biological sense. Make up, heels, dresses and long hair are seen as the most feminine things today, yet historically, it has all been male fashion at some point.

I would be really interested to know how only lengthening one half of the leg, ie the lower leg, affects your gait and athletic ability. I ride horses and have always been told I have a long thigh length and shorter lower leg in comparison, and I know a lot of women who ride with short calves struggle to physically get their lower leg on the horse, so it makes communication more difficult. I wonder how this sort of surgery would affect biomechanics. No one seems to go into that because I suppose its assumed that most of these patients are doing it for looks and aren't concerned about how it could affect athletic ability. I wonder if the last patient who chose to also lengthen the upper leg had some improvements in his ability to move easier or more naturally afterwards? 🤔

I was born with one leg extremely shorter than my other one. I undergone 23 surgeries , 7 of which were limb lengthening surgeries as they kept lengthening it to keep up with the growth of my other leg through growth spurts and teenage years. I currently have two more operations left, one to make it an exact length as my right leg & the other one is for my knee so I could bend it. Limb lengthening is not a joke, it gave me childhood trauma , the worst part of it is not the surgery or the nails and screws you see - but the aggressive physical therapy that is so painful.
The reason why it’s more painful is because the fixation device is used to lengthen bones, while there is no device to lengthen your muscles - physical therapy has to be used - just imagine someone stretching your muscles two times a day for an hour each. At time your legs bleed, I’ve had my leg broken three times In physical therapy - the complications of the surgery are many. I even had an infection one time which caused the doctors to scrape all the infection out of my bone and insert a tube in my heart for fast antibiotics.
So in the end is it worth it? For me if I could go back as a child, I would convince my parents to amputate. No matter what it will never be like an actual limb, and it would save yourself from the mental and physical trauma you have to endure. If anyone has questions about this, please let me know :) I’d be happy to answer anyone that’s thinking about going through with the surgery.

Thanks to the society and they way of thinking, I'm unable to go around it, the height has become a decisive factor, because it's rare that a girl chooses a shorter guy.

To me it's strange that people is so fixated about height. I get that tall women prefer a partner taller than them. But this extreme fixation.
A healthy relationship is not fixed, not based on someones height.
People who immediately reject someone only bcs of their height are probably missing out.
It's not about how you look togheter, it's about your connection, what you feel for eachother.
If a woman immediately rejects you bcs you are under a certain height. Consider that a win.. no matter how hot she is.
She dosent care about finding a true connection, to have someone to love. She only cares about her image & will use you to try to gain further status. Completely selfish & self centered.
And it's impossible to have a good relationship with people that don't care about having one.

I wonder whether these patients have gone for checkups such as checking growth hormone levels before pursuing such invasive methods. Granted genetics do play a role but, much of why people can be short could be because of lack of good quality food (that is ridden to little or no pesticides) and underlying causes especially if both parents are reasonably tall (above 5'5")
