There wasn't a ton out there about pregerminating grass seed by soaking it in water. I tried to figure it out. I may not have done it right, but it sure worked!
Lawncare is a meditative activity. It's a perfect mix of simplicity and tiered complexity - allowing yourself to let your mind go blank while executing a set of steps and tasks. The activity then gets reinforced with providing a tangible benefit. You look out the window every morning to see the realization of your work provide a benefit visually to you and those around you.
Good day. I found someplace that says instead of buying special cheese cloth you can simply use any cotton cloth, so I think I'm just gonna use an old t shirt or something.
Milorganite site has a slightly different process...soaking continually, changing water every 12 hours. Seed brand, not only type determines the # of days until you see germination. My kbg took 12 to 14. TtTF took 8. I'm running rests now with warm water to see if that shortens the soak duration
When you mean took 12-14. The time if took to germinate after you put it on the lawn? Did using warm water help? I'm doing that this year to see if it helps with my pre germination process with midnight Kentucky bluegrass
@phizz8694 . The warm water didn't seem to help speed up the process. It's also difficult to keep it warm. Keeping it in the house or a heated space does make sense tho
This guy is like me. I am obsessed with having a great lawn and I did when I lived in SoFla but I live in South Dakota now and my old tricks do not work lol! It's been 3 years at this new house and finally last year the grass started looking decent. This is the year for my lawn!...and by the way, I love the process, even when I fail.
Now you need to do a step-by-step on how to prime seeds and explain the difference between that and pre-germinating. The current video I saw by "turf culture" is still very vague in his explanation. Would love to see your breakdown of this process and what are the benefits and differences to priming vs pre-germinating seeds. 🙏
Great information. I think the Lawn Tool just made a video about leaving it out for 24 hrs instead of 12 hrs like you mentioned in this video. I believe its after the 1st 24hrs in water and you leave it out for 24 hrs without water. Then wet it after but don't leave it in water
@@rozwestonty. It's my second year doing this and like all newbies. You learn a lot and questions a lot about everything. "Explain to me like a toddler". Hahaha
I'm going to give pre germination a go. I just did topsoil with lawn seed and results have not been great. So if I was to do the bucket straining thing and then just mix the pre germinated seed with topsoil would that work? Also I don't have a straining cloth thing, but I've got a little thing that I use to sift flour.. So maybe I should go and get that straining cloth from somewhere. Bucket yadda yadda instructions seem straight forward. Will let you know results. And also is pre germinated lawn seed more attractive to birds, or can you depend on some of it being covered by soil at least so at least the birds don't eat all the yummy pre germinated lawn seed. By the way I tried to keep the birds away once using tin foil - didn't work so good.
Nice work. I use the technique soak in water for 24 hours (change water after 12 hours). Then strain water and empty seed into bucket and cover and keep in warm place, mixing around every 24 hours. Chits after about 5 days then get it down on the ground!
When you removed the water and let it sit without water for 12 hours you showed the bags sitting in a frame but you said leave in bucket without water ... so which is it ... leave the bag out on a frame or put the bag in the bucket without water or some combination of the two ?
Roz you are great. I have the same sentiments when you make your side comments about pre-germinating grass. ... a little casual about the elements of precision when planting the grass.
What type and brand of grass seed are you using? I'm in Southern Ontario too and trying to figure out what seed to use. I listen to you every morning on the Roz and Mocha show. Love you guys!!!
I did the same thing a year ago, got confused by the video you mentioned, tried it and it still kinda worked. Then mostly died. But I'm going to try again with your explanation! Thanks for nerding out on this, very helpful.
Was doing some research into pregerminating grass seed. I had to do a double take when I saw whose video this was because I'm from Toronto. This is the most hilarious crossover and I love it.
Im 1h away from Toronto, in South-West side. I pre-germinated and seeded when we had exceptional warm weather earlier this month, then cold weather hit. Many seeds haven't germinated yet.. i feel like bunch of them died off at this point. It was my first time pregerminating and it is definitely a good learning process
Your explanation was much more straight forward than mine 😁👍🏼. Nice work!
Nah, man. Thank you!

It definitely works and is great up here when putting down KBG where the weather can quickly move from a short spring to hot summer.
Finally. We've missed you.
thank you way more confident about it now
What if you dry the grass seed on a piece of plastic for a little while before you spread it on your lawn.
Your place looks so tranquil
Roz is back!!! I was missing these. Thanks for bringing the channel back!
Excuse me sir, if you ever leave us like that again you’re gonna be in biiiiiiiigggg trouble mister, the lawn gang have missed you! ☺️
Process starts at 4:07
Thank you 🙏

@@jcs1758 Thank you.
so how many days did it take to germinate once you put it on your lawn?
@phizz8694 the days I listed in my earlier comments were the days I soaked them. Both the kbg and TTTF popped in about 3 days
I get super depressed and the only thing that makes me happy is lawn care.
On point..
You’re back! 🤗

The King has returned
Wait. Where can I get Milorganite?????
Wonderful, uplifting, and very informative. Thank you!

Thank you! I’ve been buuuuuusy!
Good stuff, thanks for sharing!
Hello, love the video! How much mix did you put for how many Sqft?
Roz and Mocha, Roz roz and mocha lmao. Didnt know you did lawn care videos.
Welcome back! Saved it for when it’s my turn 😆
OMG, you totally get me. I'm going to stop being embarrassed about cutting my lawn every other day! (And probably try the pre-germinating thing too).
Would areation work better to put the seed out?
What was the overall watering strategy on this?
I usually do it during Spring instead...
this looks like a golf course man
Mil*org*in*ite? Avocado jokes?
I really enjoyed your video !

Yeah. We both screwed up our first vids. Go with what you said. This was my first time.

Barenbrug Winter Wonderlawn Italian/Perennial Ryegrass Sun i tried everything this worked, didn't soak anything just sprinker
Thank you so much for this video! I watched a lot of videos on this subject, but you cleared up much of the confusion about the process.

The high of pristine grass, to the low of d-e-d dead grass has been some of the (non family) high lows of my life.
What type and brand of grass seed are you using? I'm in Southern Ontario too and trying to figure out what seed to use. I listen to you every morning on the Roz and Mocha show. Love you guys!!!
Good looking lawn!!
I'm tempted to try a fish emulsion soak along side water soak.
I've heard a cup of H2o2 can be thrown in water. Still researching
It has been a long time. Miss your wit and your vids. Thanks for this. Going to try it, Roz Style.

So glad to see you back...I've wanted a toro prostripe ever since I saw your video a couple of years ago... 👊👊
Could I use this technique on a new lawn for good germination? I was thinking using a peat moss spreader as well for good coverage...
You want to help me write a book... I have a lot more stuff to tell..😊
Bro I was thinking about your channel a few months ago and am glad you're back!
I appreciate your philosohy. I thought I was the only one thinking like you do. Thanks
Wtf ? Isn’t this the guy from ET ? Didn’t seem like a turf guy.

Curious about your book. How did you publish it?
I do ONE video and now eveybody has one..???
What spreader did you utilize and the setting?
Loved the break down. Thanks man! 🙏💯👍
What's the trick to spreading the seed with a broadcast spreader? Sounds like you didn't have much luck that way since you spread it by hand.
It worked fine in the spreader. But I had one very large spot that needed it the most. So I just threw it down by hand.
@@rozweston oooh okay. Thank you very much for the quick reply! Getting ready to overseed my front yard in a couple weeks here up in MN.
Yes this is MY process and you said it best on how to do it!!! Good video!
Amazing! Well said at the end!!
Do u have automatic sprinkler system at the cottage?
Yeah. For sure.
Too long, too much wods ...
