- In August 2012 we were lucky enough to have Tommy Emmanuel perform here at the Australian Institute of Music (AIM). He also brought 2 very special guests Frank Vignola and Vinny Raniolo from New York.
Here Tommy, Frank and Vinny perform a fantastic "Hot Club" -style medley. The first song is Hungarian Dance No.5 by Johannes Brahms. The second song is Swing 39 Swing 42 by Django Reinhardt.

Emmanuel's unique style - he calls it simply "finger style" - is akin to playing a guitar the way a pianist plays a piano. While Tommy has many imitators, few approach his mastery. He even has his own annual guitar festivals, "Tommy Fest," in Newport News, Virginia, Louisville, KY and Dortmund, Germany.
Jazz legend Chet Atkins was one of the first people who inspired Emmanuel to pick up a guitar. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel's biggest fans, and is responsible for declaring Emmanuel a "Certified Guitar Player" - an honour shared by only two other people in the world (Jerry Reed and John Knowles). "I think he's probably the greatest finger-picker in the world today," Atkins said a few months prior to his death in 2001. "He's inventive, fearless and has a flawless sense of rhythm. You can't watch Tommy perform and not feel happy."
"I've spent my whole life from the age of 4 playing music and entertaining people. I never wanted to do anything else," says Emmanuel. "Playing the guitar is much more than a career for me. It's a passion ... my life. The best thing in the world is to make people happy and bring them together through my music. Because I'm touring so much these days, the whole world has become my home."
In his storied career, the Grammy-nominated Emmanuel has set sales records that have yet to be broken and performed alongside hundreds of other musical legends including Chet Atkins, EricClapton, Sir George Martin, Hank Marvin and Joe Walsh. Olivia Newton-John, Al Jarreau and Sheena Easton have also recorded songs written by Emmanuel.
The consummate musician was voted Rolling Stone (Australia) Magazine's "Most Popular Guitarist" for two consecutive years and has earned four Platinum and three Gold albums. When his album "Dare to be Different" went Platinum, it was the first instrumental album to do so in Australia in more than 25 years and has not been topped since its release.
In Australia, Emmanuel's music and life are legendary.
At 83 yrs of age I thought I had seen it all. Started with my dad who loved Django Reinhardt and the Hot club of Quincy. Since then seeing Tommy Emmanuel, Joscho Stephan, Frank Vignola, I am in heaven, and listen to them most nights. I hope these magnificent guitar players realize the joy they are giving to so many people who can watch and listen to them on you tube. You have brought so much joy to me. Thank you all again
Some of the best music ever written. I love this stuff. Sometimes makes me wonder if I am from a past life? This music just makes me feel good!
Itzik Janowitz 😚😚
I am 70 and grew up in France. Django & Hot Club music was always present in our house.
Nothing but respect my friend.
Great reply. I’m with you all the way. It’s joyous music …
There ought to be a federal law prohibiting this it's just so unfair. I've seen Tommy and Frank together twice and my jaw is permanently damaged from hitting the floor. And it's not just speed for the sake of speed, it's so totally musical.
Really like the way Tommy and Frank leave room for the rhythm guy who is probably way better than the likes of me could ever hope to be.
Screw all the rock guitar gods. These guys are waaaaaaaaay ahead of all of them.
Amen brother, my father was pretty well known jazz guitar player in the 40’s and 50’s. And over the years I forgot how good music was then . You tube gives me a master class every night in guitar. My son said that he read an article that your 60’s are your most productive years. I told him to give me another 6 months and I am going to give my family a concert . Maybe my 19 year old daughter will admire (and like) me😊
God I'm so glad I found this again. I still have no idea what I just watched, is there literally anything on a guitar these 3 couldn't do
Even the rhythm guy is probably so amazing that I wouldn't believe it.
the guitarist on the right makes absolutely no mistakes, everything he plays sounds sooo clear
For those who don't know Vinny also riffs like a champion.
Things are always fun when Tommy is around
Yeah... God bless him!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME! ARE YOU EVEN HUMAN! Stunning.
Vinnie is a fookin human metronome
underrated comment
Solid as a rock!
....yess.... :-)
I played professionally for 20 years and Tommy kicks my ass
What I don't quite get is that I have been following great guitarists all my when I'm 64 life, and have only just discovered this bloke...he is literally the best guitarist in the world, as well as having such personality, joy and star quality..lets get him on the pyramid at Glasto without delay!!!
Tommy, I can not express how much I, as a fellow player, appreciate the talent. Thanks for being an inspiration.
Listening to these guys is pure ear-candy....Tommy is just unbelievable.....
Vinnie locks that groove down. I could watch these three forever. Vinnie is also a great guitarist in his own right. I watched him cut everyone's head once, Frank included.
Tommy has brought back Frank and Vinny for the Palace of Fine Arts in a few weeks in San Francisco. We all enjoyed them so much last year!
Tommy Emmanuel is the King of guitars! (The best to you all from Norway!)
Instead of giving up, use it as inspiration. I got to see TE perform on Thursday night, then last night got to do a workshop with Frank and Vinny at Boulevard music. A couple of hours later they gave an awesome concert. I am a very intermediate level and am doing the exercises Frank recommended. Never give up the guitar!!!! We need a world filled with music. :-)
Это просто супер желаю вам ребята долгих лет чтобы радовали нас.
Caught Frank and Vinnie this evening in Chicago. Caught Tommy last year. Thanks for the CD, Frank! Greatest players, and great guys.
So glad that Tommy loves "Swing 42" so much - every time it gets more exciting!
There's more great music in the first 30 seconds of this video than most guitarplayers can make in a week.
so much happiness
Agreed. Why do the "Pop" and "Rock" stars get so caught up in ego?
Who else wanted it to go on forever ?😃
ah dude, datz was awesome. this new generation needs to see a real show like this.
makes the rest of us want to disassemble our guitars and build them into bird houses. I was blessed to sit on the front row and meet Tommy before hand , by far, the best Christmas present ever!!
This is one of those, once in a lifetime combinations of talent ,that was meant to happen;and I'm grateful for it.
"Django lives forever thanks to these Guys
i swear i thought the guitars would suddenly burst into flames!
I think I'll give up the guitar and take up knitting! Fantastic trio!!!
My husband and my son saw Tommy tonight in a show in PA. They both were amazed.
incredible musicianship, very tasteful playing
Its almost too much to handle! How much better can it get
It probably can't get any better
I'm speechless..My GOD!! What an amazing musicians!
it just cant get better than this can it??????? bloody awesome
Is Django smiling or what? Vinny so awesome and understated but his solid rhythm keeps it all together! T & f ; great seeing them "dueling" and having fun!!!!!!
These two played with Tommy the past two years in SF, they are great.
the hot club of django's legacy is in good hands with the salute of these guys.
The harmonies are so tight that it almost sounds like an effect. Bravo
this is what i love about gypsy jazz its so unpretencious whereas alot of the other kinds of jazz are so up themselves
WOW! My ears can barely keep up! My fingers NEVER would.
2024 8.25.🎉Still great🎉
... grosse technique pour une musique légère,... légère,... légère ... de vrais pros qui respectent un public exigeant en livrant avec le sourire un travail impeccable et hautement artistique ... la "classe"!
Implicit shared beat. Wonderful.
I love it when you get three fantastic guitar players together, and when they play it's just perfect harmony. They bounce off each other so well and have so much fun
What there is no need for are your crude, demeaning comments. They're having fun while playing. They're relaxed. They are concentrating. Is that wrong? Is it against the rules to look at each other?
I would have enjoyed it more if they closed their eyes and listened to the music like Tommy does when he plays solo. There is no need need for these unsavoury glances at each other, it is very disconcerting.
Only because you make it that way. I'm not looking for it, so I didn't see it.

It seems a pity that you felt the need to come here with your repressed homosexual desires, to make a comment on something you know very little about.
This video is about the beauty and symmetry of music mixed with the amazing talents of three virtuosos.
If you attend an orchestrated concert, do you also sit there studying the faces of the players looking for some man you would like to have sex with?
Along with your mouth, you should also keep your hands off your crotch, shut your eyes and enjoy the music & revel only in the fact that you are lucky to be alive to hear such virtuosity.
heelfan1234 You have obviously never played guitar with anyone else. Do you look at people when you talk to them, or do you just close your eyes the whole time? Communication is a good thing when playing with others.
way to much talent at the same place!
i love it!
Masters of the genre. I'm sure D'jango was smiling that night.
they look like they are having so much fun
They look like they've been practicing for thousands of years :D
tommy, your a bloody legend mate.
Watching Tommy play amazes me. He mostly - always plays a Maton without a cutaway . How is that possible.
Great music...
I never tire of watching these guys. They are masters at their craft who have put in hours of practice (for Tommy and Frank add up those hours in decades!!!) and when onstage make it all look so easy. AND they have fun while doing it. They are all wonderful men who enjoy what they do and want to share their joy with the world and bring a smile to a face. Thanks for posting this!!!
i must have watched this 100 times - so good
This is just extraordinary in every respect. Happy to have magic like this recorded and shared with the world.
I saw Tommy supported by The Frank Vignola Trio at the De Montfort Hall, Leicester (UK) some years ago and after his set Tommy ,Frank and Vinny finished the evening off with a Django-style set which really brought the house down-this is bringing back great memories!!
Шедевральная тройка,каждый из которых профессионал с большой буквы! Я счастлив что могу слышать и видеть это волшебство!Артистизм высшей степени!
So much fun they appear to be enjoying themselves just as it should be.
This is the aerobatics!

Simply incredibly incredible
Ken weedon
Brilliant as usual and the two others guitarist were brilliant also. He is an inspiration to all musicians even a hacked out piano player like me LOL Always love Django and Stephan's music - Hot Club Quintet du France. Loved those harmonies in the second song.
This music is so joyous. I love, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!!!!
Thank you Jamie!
Tears of joy, love the Django number, more more more more please. Thanks AimTV
