So many of his movies either under-performed or flat out bombed. Yet here we are, 25-35 years later still talking about his films and the social commentaries they had that were relevant then, and are still relevant now. So many genius artists who's work goes unnoticed until long after they've died. I would honestly say that Carpenter is like our modern day genius artist who audiences simply didn't understand during his career, and only appreciate his work long after it's over when everyone has caught up with what he was trying to say.
Disagree with Carpenter - Bridges and Allen had amazing chemistry and the movie was a wonderful love story. This movie would work at any time. Carpenter is 100% correct on Karen Allen - those eyes!
I just watched "Starman" because of a reference in another film review and despite the aged SFX and the partially cheesy synth-music Carpenter made a movie that deserves respect for a strong cast, excellent timing and editing, believable motivations, a realistic dialogue and an overall interesting and exciting plot with a very tasteful sense for the emotions and a fine cultural and philosophical undercurrent. A movie to recommend.
It’s funny how starman starts the same way as the thing did, with a spaceship coming to earth. At least this time he wasn’t universally hated for the movie.

John’s right about Jeff Bridges, and yet, when he was cast to play Obadiah Stain in Iron Man, a character who is his complete opposite, I feel managed to nail it. Jeff is a national treasure.
Great interview! Even if I strongly disagree with Carpenter's thoughts on Halloween II. I really like this interviewer too. Sad that he died so young. Bold statement but as much as I love the original Halloween, I think there is a good argument that Halloween II is an even more effective late night after hours horror film to watch at that time of night even more than the original (the masterpiece that it is).
Jim Whaley is an android. Seems ill-suited to this job as film interviewer, and would probably be better at working as a bank teller or warehouse employee. Give me another Roger Ebert, please. Someone who loves movies and when talking about movies, you can hear it in their voice and know that they have a knowledge about film. This stuffed shirt is stuffed. Almost put Carpenter and the audience to sleep in 1984.
I thought he did a good job, if a bit ambiguous, like a kid who knows the answers to a test but can only come up with them after being prodded a bit. he seemed to have some personal feelings that were contrary to what he expressed, hard to tell if and when he was lying. I'm surprised someone else picked up on anything like that though.

Carpenter was wrong about Halloween II, i think it is a very good sequel to his masterpiece.
Not very good, but good.
