John Carpenter takes a stab at a sci-fi romance with Starman. I was excited to finally check this one out and, unfortunately, it was an awkward experience.

There's a starman waiting in the sky, he'd like to come and meet us but he'd think he'd blow our minds
Watching this as a child I did NOT boogie.
I love Dewey Cox singing this in Walk Hard , surely Bowie had to approve
@@Emulous79 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😭
@@subtleb1138 Walk Hard:The Dewey Cox Story is where I 1st heard about a “Starman”, I NEVER knew that it was an actual movie.
The scene with the deer is priceless.
i don't think i agree with a single point you made. love the movie, love the performances, love the subtext, love the effects. love the music. to each his own though.
Dude..this is one of my favorite movies of all time!
Is it me, or is this movie's score GORGEOUSLY sad? Like, I love it, but man I saw this movie as a kid and the score was insanely impactful on my mind. Gorgeously sad!
I love the score too, there is a definite sadness in it, but in a good way
It's amazing ... huge synths .. really beautifully 'sad', but triumphant main theme. It's epic and really gets stuck in your head. Good stuff.
Fun fact: after watching this film Wes craven took inspiration from John carpenter and filmed “friend” but after test audiences didn’t understand that craven was trying to go a different route away from horror they begged for more gore and we ended up getting “deadly friend”
Love that you talked about this! This was one of the first movies my Dad recorded on our VCR in the mid 80s! I have such nostalgia for it and I remember it being creepy as a kid, especially the baby morphing into a kid and then man in the beginning. So then I never watched it again for almost 30 years but finally gave it another go last summer and HOLY shit it was super awkward and bad in all the ways you outlined! But because it was a film from childhood and I have all these memories/nostalgia attached to it, it remains kinda untouchable in my book! Still, glad you reviewed this one. Hopefully it inspires others to give it a whirl too!
Not only was this a hit movie. It spawned a TV series that was pretty popular as well.
This is a movie review I thought I would never see...ever..on this channel...never ever. Glad it's here Cody. I loved this movie as a kid, Karen Allen..Jeff Bridges...red means stop, green means go, yellow means go very fast...advice I use at least once a week.
Don't forget Karen Allen was Mom in Sandlot, and Katy in Animal House too
I saw this movie last year, and I loved it instantly.
“There's a starman waiting in the sky, he’d like to come and meet us, but he thinks he'd blow our minds”
2007 [the year I graduated high school]
Walk Hard:The Dewey Cox Story is where I 1st heard about a “Starman”, I NEVER knew that John C.Reilly was parodying an actual movie/song.
Great review Cody. I watched this film for the first time a few months ago and I thought this was a fantastic film with great pacing, great performances especially from Jeff Bridges and I thought it had a great balance of humor, drama and romance.
Cody Leach I understand your opinion completely, I know I wouldn't have been into it either if I'd watched it when you did.
For me though personally, this movie is therapeutic..
2 scenes in particular: first when she describes what it feels like when someone you care about dies, followed almost immediately when he brings the deer back to life. That was some of the best movie magic I ever experienced...

@Cody Also thank you for resuming the Carpenter series. Much appreciated
I loved this movie as a kid
Starman was a great yet very underated film.
They Live is a very underrated John Carpenter movie starring wrestler Roddy Piper & Keith David very funny and cool 😎
'Starman' is a movie that grew on me. When I first saw it in the '80s (on either VHS or cable tv), I did not like it at all. I hated Jeff Bridge's performance and thought it was a major misstep for John Carpenter. I then didn't watch it again for over 30 years.
Last year, I did a rewatch of all of John Carpenter's movies (inspired by RLM to do so) and actually liked 'Starman' - I was really surprised it wasn't a bad movie at all as I had thought for years. Now I've watched it a couple more times and think it's a great film. Jeff Bridge's performance is more nuanced than first impression as he slowly gets better at speaking as the movie goes on. It's very subtle, but noticable. I also bought into the love story aspect much more. I now recommend 'Starman' to everyone as a forgotten gem of a movie.
“Yellow means ‘Very Fast’…” 😅
Personally I loved watching The Dude (Jeff Bridges character in The Big Lebowski) & Scotty Smalls mother (Karen Allen's character in The Sandlot)
To me it was funny to see characters from from my top 3 movies of all time at the moment (Sandlot my number 1, Fargo at number 2, & The Big Lebowski at number 3)
There was actually a TV series that served as a sequel to the story starring Robert Hays.
As a single parent of 2 daughters with an x who is supposed to pay child support but in 10 years hasn't paid a dime, i loved Dave. Until i had to file bankruptcy. Than dave told me to f off. (Seriously) im not mad at you Cody. Get paid brother!
I completely forgot about you doing the John Carpenter reviews, so seeing a review of this from you was like "WTF?". Yeah, I also know her from Animal House, but Starman, I've seen a few episodes of the TV series, which could be found on RUclips, but never saw the movie. Anyways, thank you, Cody.
I've never seen Starman, but from the clips shown, Jeff Bridge's character seems to be the inspiration for Mathesar on Galaxy Quest.
Yes! Only that movie is a spoof comedy so it works. Lol
@@CodyLeachYT hey Cody season 6 of cobra Kai is the last season thank god that garbage 🗑 series is ending and u shouldn’t even watch or review it for your channel
I think you need to be nominated for an Oscar for that reenactment of the baby scene! 😅
It is an underrated classic!!! Loved this film, it stuck with me for years then watched again in.my 20s. Still love it. I thought it was beautiful rather than awkward 😊
I adore Starman, such a fun and heartwarming romance / SF / road movie!
Sure, it's bit naive but who cares? It's so good :)
This one of my mom's favorite John Carpenter movies. However, she likes The Thing, Escape from New York, and The Fog more (The Fog is her absolute favorite).
Such a great review series so far Cody! Next up is Big Trouble In Little China 🔥
I absolutely can't stand romance but if I were to watch one this would be the one. I thought it was well done and rather enjoyed it . Mostly entertaining movie. Funny that the one romance film I enjoy just happens to be from my favorite filmmaker mainly for his horror work lol
Fun fact: Columbia pictures considered selecting E.T. but instead chose to finance and produce Starman. Of course after that, Universal picked up E.T.
Nice! Another great Jeff Bridges performance. Thanks for doing this.
Starman is phenomenal!!! You have had to watch it as a 6 to 8 year old boy.
Or girl lol
I didn't expect this & it's great, thank you!
John Carpenter met with Tom Cruise for the role. They hit it off very well; the fact that both were from Kentucky certainly greased the wheels, I'm sure. JC wanted to cast Cruise, but Ridley Scott was going to have him tied up for a year on Legend. Columbia Pictures couldn't wait. Next, they casted Karen Allen, which drove them to cast Starman older (which I thought was the right choice.) From what I've read, Starman's script existed prior to E.T., but it languished in development hell for several years. After E.T. became a smash, major studios were clamoring for ANYTHING that was remotely similar. Columbia already had the Starman script, and it finally got greenlit immediately.
The Starman TV series was amazing.
Indeed. Heartwarming and completely underrated.
Honestly didn't remember this movie until you mentioned it.
My mom (RIP) looked a lot like Karen Allen. I'll watch anything with her in it. That being said, this movie is very middle of the road for me.
I"m sure you've gotten this a hundred times, but I would love to see a tier list of John Carpenter films.
Cube franchise review
Came on Cody do it please 🥺
I love this movie. The TV series was pretty good too.
The Thing came out the same year as E.T. and didn't do good at the box office or with critics and was criticized for being too dark and bleak so Carpenter made Starman which is tonally the opposite of the Thing to appeal to a general audience and so he could still be employed In Hollywood.
That's what I read, too. He made Starman for the wrong reasons, imo, but kind of dropped out after Big Trouble and came back with Prince of Darkness, which felt like him going back to the roots. Funny how he's flip-flopped between appeasing big studios and going all rebel with the independent features.
In order to get it! (Our love for this film) you have to be of age!!! Born 1984 or before is a must!!!
Both Allen and Bridges want to make a sequel. I hope it happens
Despite being a huge JC fan I hadn't seen this movie for years before buying it cheap on Blu-Ray a few years ago. And I liked it better than I remember. It helps seeing this on a big ass HD widescreen TV and not a Blockbuster rental from 1995 on a 19' standard definition tv. JC definitely needs to be viewed in it's proper widescreen format. Plus it had Jason Voorhees (Ted White) in a small role. Bonus!
Looking forward to Escape From LA
Thank for the review 💓
I'm probably the biggest John Carpenter fan in these comments. Unpopular Opinion - this is John Carpenter's last GREAT movie.
I still love every film he released afterward, but Starman is the last film I'd rate a solid 10/10.
Thats a fantastic shirt my guy 🤘
Haven't watched this since it came out, need a rewatch.
Cody, this was really highly regarded back in the day.....I thought it was ok but no masterpiece Didn't it get an oscar nod?.100% on Jeff Bridges' performance. I agree that the tone is all over the shop.
I used to like this movie when I was a child.... Haven't seen it since.
my fav movie is mouth of madness i heard a lot about star man in school from my teacher he liked it too back when it 1st came out
i never seen star man and never will
I thought this flick was awesome in my opinion.
Cody ,have you seen Arlington Road?Jeff Bridges and John Cusack, great thriller even if you see the twist at the end
@@zeynepgulsu1899 Spot on,my mistake,his sister Joan
4:01 that’s because Karen Allen was always busy at the tollbooth. If you’re a fan or RLM, you know what I’m talking about
God you're such a lame ass troll, you wish that you had the fame and the movie career or amounted to anything that Karen Allen did, despite your lies or anyone else's lies she had a massive movie career not to mention starred in legendary iconic movies like the Indiana Jones franchise, Scrooged or even animal House, the fact that she was also a theater and TV actress at the same time, but you rather talk delusional nonsense that you copied from somebody else, and you're such a pathetic narcissist you got a copy someone else's pathetic narcissistic gibberish you can't even be original with your BS, get a life too late you never had one, Better yet you go back to the toll booth you and that other idiot narcissist work at, and just be a forgotten nobody or just keep deflecting your failures of being a nobody to famous, successful and Beloved people like Karen Allen, because remember she's famous and you're nobody, that's why you're watching this about her and nobody knows you or ever will know you.
I used to have this on vhs as a kid and I thought Harrison Ford was the lead for some reason. lol Maybe I was remembering Regarding Henry or some shit. If it was a better movie I would have definitely known it was Jeff Bridges
This needs a sequel
There was, a TV series.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE This Movie !!! One of my faves
I like the movie, but I definitely can see where you're coming from here. And I think Lincoln Osiris might have a theory as to why Bridges was nominated but didn't win. 🤣
Starman is a one off, like The Thing. She really loved her husband, she was very drunk and did not believe what was happening. If it was me getting a second chance with a woman that loved me, I would go for it. You don't have that problem.
This was always John's "chick flick" he did. To this day, my Mom hates most Carpenter films, but she loves Starman. Her favorite. Women see different things in this than us guys. Me? It's OK. It, along with Escape From L.A. & Ghosts of Mars are the most mainstream 'big release' John ever got.
Ted White is in this film.
I’ve never heard about that movie
My Dad and Stepmom have a fondness for the movie as it was something of a "date movie" for them. I like it as well, but I can see why it wasn't for everyone. Shame you didn't like it @Cody.
BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Cody!!! BOOOOOOO!!!!! (Throws a load of tomatoes)🍅🍅🍅 lol Well I don't care what you thought of it, I love this film, I've watched it several times and I love it more each time I watch it, definitely one of Carpenters most under rated films. Jeff Bridges is awesome in this.
Garden of the Galaxy Quill's dad
The Book of Souls 🤘
I watched last night. I watched it when I was a child but it was nothing more than a faint memory in my head. It was good, but the alien acting so robotic and as if it were a stupid creature didn't make sense for creature that travels through space which necessarily means its race is highly intelligent.
"A space shuttle with a radio broadcast"? Seriously?
I loved this movie I’m sorry but I love it so much it made me cry. I love it more than Halloween I just don’t find it a good movie but Starman is in my top five carpenter movies
1 the thing
2 big trouble in little China
3 vampires
4 Starman
5 Christine
Halloween is a snooze fest .... I've never understood its huge following. The only thing I really enjoyed about it was the opening credits and the score.
@@Fiveash-Art i think its a matter of taste and perspective
@@andresnavarro5978 Well yeah, duh. 😂 Everyone has their own tastes. Halloween 3 was more entertaining to me than the first movie ... The nondescript heavy breather in the Captain Kirk mask never did much for me. It wasn't 'suspenseful', it was just boring. I'd rather watch a goofy movie like Prom Night than that thing... Jamie Lee Curtis was fine as hell in that one.
@@Fiveash-Art it wasn’t boring, and it was indeed suspenseful 🙄 probably one of the few movies in cinema that is suspenseful.
@@Las645 Says you. It makes me fall asleep.
I picked this movie dvd up for 25p in a charity shop to add to my john carpenter collection but still not watched it
@Cody huge disagreement with your take on this gem from JC, However, as always I know you say what you mean and you come from love and fandom. It is ok to disagree :) it saddens me you even need to say some things because you have a different view. To ME, Starman proved to me how full of $hit his critics and THAT part of Hollywood is when it comes to john Carpenter. Bridges SHOULD of won the academy but again he is nominated for best actor but no best Director or even music. Very haunting score and proof JC could do far more then horror (along with Escape from N.Y and Big Trouble in Little China.) Karen Allen was brilliant in this too. It is what I THINK would happen (just as it did in E.T) the government would always be shady and always try and cut something open "to learn it". I always wished for a sequel to the story but it never came due to mediocre sales tho some Oscar nominations. As for your issues with the film they are there, but like anyone who likes a movie the good far outweighed the bad for me. I appreciate you always speaking your mind, hopefully you get less an less push back from the loud minority.
All I remember is being a child and sitting in the living room 🛋️ 📺 with my parents. There was a sex scene and I was soooo uncomfortable. 😬 🙈 ( I haven't watched your review yet because I just had a flasback. 😵 )
You make me sad..... Come Patsy!
Wheres your John Carpenter rankings?
…You already did a Wes Craven rankings.
Just wait until you get to Memoirs Of An Invisible Man 😬
Dang, this is disappointing. The early 80s were a pretty rough time for Carpenter, I guess.
Speaking of the 80s, are you going to return to your Best of the 80s series soon?
Yes. Best of 1983 by the end of January.
@@CodyLeachYT awesome. Can't wait.
JEFF went full Alien, never go full Alien
It's A Good Movie.
Just because you don't have any understanding of movies and very poor taste doesn't mean that this isn't exactly what you just said. It was an incredibly underrated movie by John Carpenter
If you seen it in the 80s I guarantee your opinion of the movie would be better. Unfortunately you watched it recently and it's not gonna hit as hard. I'm sure you've heard great things but was underwhelmed.
I saw this film when it 1st came out and even after watching your review I can barely remember anything about it
forget everyone else. I agree with your review off starman. Liked it when i was a kid hated as a adult in his 40's. First half of the film pretty good, second half of Starman is really bad. Biggest plus was the special effects pretty good for 1984. very overated film.
As a big John Carpenter fan, I am not the biggest fan of Starman either. My wife liked it, but for me, it doesn't really feel like a John Carpenter film. Carpenter's films are all about attitude and rebelling against authority. Starman is just a sci-fi romance. It's a good movie to me, but it's not one of my favorites.
First of all there is a little rebel theme in Starman, the scientist who f*cks with the military and let Starmanm go.
Also what's more punk rock for a horror director than to direct an amazing love story while everyone is expecting from you another horror?
In my humble opinion Starman feels a lot like a Carpenter flick :)
@@oskar_oskarewicz To be fair, the scientist guy was my favorite character in the film. He felt like a proper Carpenter character.
😄
Sad to hear you hated this classic from John Carpenter.
My brother and I well remember this movie back from when we saw it as kids. I definitely agree that it's not all that great. Usually we'd see it in the theaters when there was nothing else we found worth watching. I remember every viewing never feeling satisfied.
I can't really comprehend why Jeff Bridges would get an Oscar nomination for this role, when every bodily and facial movement of his was like a nervous tic. My brother and I had and still do make fun of Bridges' ridiculously stiff delivery of his lines.
Composer Jack Nitzsche rarely turned out with good soundtracks (the big exception being his score for Revenge). Here, Starman's main theme (first heard when Jeff carries Karen out of the burning wreckage) I found utterly annoying!
I wouldn't totally agree that the movie's tone blending drama, romance and comedy was really all over the place. But I do agree overall that it didn't stick the landing. There was a TV series of Starman based on this movie which I believe is much better.
Starman is great .... everyone has their own taste ... I always thought the first Halloween was boring as hell .. but its cult following is massive. The only thing about that movie that ever really resonated with me were the opening credits and that amazing soundtrack theme. Big Trouble in Little China is Carpenter's best in my view... Halloween falls somewhere at the bottom of the list in ranking for me. Starman, Christine, Prince of Darkness, The Thing are all superior movies. When it comes to proto slasher movies, give me Psycho or Texas Chainsaw Massacre any day. Halloween is overrated. Starman rocks ... beautiful movie. He should've given it a go at more of its type. ... Your impression of Bridges "I gave you a baby" dialog was hilarious. 🤘🏻😂🤘🏻
*spoilers*
the non-consensual pregnancy hell nahhhhh hahaha this movie is such a weird one. Didn't age well
I agree 😂 it would’ve been sweeter if they did it in a better way. Cause…..
I agree. A teacher showed my class some scene from this is high school for some reason... after a couple years I wanted to watch the movie in full especially when I found out it was a Carpenter movie... then I watched it and I haven't watched it in probaby 15 years.... its just weird and Jeff Bridges performance just doesn't make sense and it's just full of plot conveniences... I think the people who like it liked it when it was released. Of all Carpenters movies is just one that didn't age well, its a product of its time that just couldn't ever work today.
I love John Carpenter. Not all of his films age well. Most do, but not this one. At least not for me.
Same I always thought this movie was way overrated...I dont think I will ever revisit it
Sounds throughly frightening! Skip. Lol.
If you fastforward some of the absolutely dull and poorly done scenes, there is a decent 1 hour film or so. The bird movements were definitely birdlike, but it is never explained why he would behave like a bird. There was no reason at all for this. That's why it was distracting. Birds behave this way because they have no arms to swing and their eyes on both sides of their head. Bridges had none of these circumstances.
I fully agree with this review and how much you wanted to love it, but eventually have to accept that it has too much chop and mess and unable to really depict what they were trying to depict.
The delivery of the pregnancy line and everything else was too bizarre.
I think if I would have seen this as a child, I'd love the film because all the problems with pacing and dialogue and writing etc would be overlooked by the main musical theme and the feelings and hope etc.
Another thing perhaps of note is the fact that movie's ending somewhat copied off of the climactic sequence from "Wavelength", another low-budget alien visitation flick from 1982, and one of my personal favorites.
In the aforementioned film, an alien craft, shaped like a gigantic sphere, descends into the desert to retrieve some extraterrestrial visitors, while military aircraft, attempting to intervene in their departure, are awestruck by the sight of this otherworldly phenomenon.
The film was written and directed by Mike Gray, who, interestingly enough, wound up co-producing the Starman television series which aired in 1986. In my opinion, this show was superior to the movie it was based on.
