Sombrita will train very well as she has with everything. You two have done an awesome job with her, and Graham is amazing! Wish I could get you to train my cats!!! That restaurant situation was outrageous! I'm not a scene maker either but I think that would have sent me over the edge! I can't imagine living long term in a van! But you two plus your fur babies have done such an awesome job of coping with the small living space and constantly moving, working on the road, raising and training a puppy while traveling, i can only imagine! I'm sure your planning some down time once you get back to the states, which would be good. So deep breath and know that we aren't going anywhere, were just along for the ride and appreciate everything you do to show us the world!!❤
Hey Wanda! Thank you so much for your kind words and support! We really appreciate it. Sombrita is indeed a quick learner, and we're so proud of her progress. As for training cats, it can be a bit tricky, but with patience and understanding, it's definitely possible! Oh, that restaurant situation was definitely a bit crazy! We try to stay positive and not let those things get to us too much. Living in a van long term definitely has its challenges, but it's also so rewarding. And yes, once we get back to the states, some down time will definitely be in order. We're looking forward to reconnecting with family and friends, and maybe even taking a break from the constant movement for a little while. Thank you for being part of our journey and for your unwavering support. It means the world to us! We're so glad to have you along for the ride, and we'll keep doing our best to show you the world and share our adventures. Sending you lots of love and gratitude! ❤️

I volunteer at a dog rescue in Mexico. Food aggression is a common trait. Dogs who can spend all day together have to be separated at meal time and then as soon as meal time is over, they can be together again. It is not easy to try to work with this problem at the shelter because we just don't have the time.
Hi Susan! Wow, it's amazing that you volunteer at a dog rescue in Mexico! That's such an important and rewarding job. It's unfortunate that food aggression is a common trait among the dogs, but I understand the challenges you face at the shelter. The fact that you and the team are providing a safe environment for these dogs is truly commendable. Keep up the fantastic work, Susan. Your dedication to these furry friends is making a real difference in their lives. Sending you and the dogs lots of love and positive energy from South America! 🌟🐾
We had a dog that was a resource guarder with both food and resting space. I ended up getting bit and needing a couple of stiches on my hand. We were considering putting him down but, we saw an animal behavior vet from Texas A&M. It was not cheap but, the lessons she gave us did help us. It took a long time but, in the end it was worth it. When you get back to the states it might help to try and see someone associated with a veterinary school. The fact that Sombrita is already well trained should help I think. Reptation and consistency are the key and then little steps forward.
Hi Kelly! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. It sounds like you went through a challenging time with your dog, but it's great to hear that the animal behavior vet worked and was definitely worth it. We're always learning and growing with our pets too, so it's a journey for all of us. Thank you again for sharing your story and offering your advice. Wishing you and your furry friends all the best! Safe travels! 🚐✨
My competing toilet makes living in a van so much less stressful. I spend full days in areas without a public toilet and I don’t have to worry about it, or worse, leave to go find a bathroom. 5yrs in a van without a toilet - that’s pretty darn amazing, but it sounds like it’s time to get one. Happy and safe travels to all the Vandersons
Hey Keriezy! Thanks so much for your comment, I'm really glad you enjoyed the video! We're always striving to bring you the most authentic and engaging content, so it's awesome to hear that you enjoyed this one. Stay tuned for more! Take care and happy exploring! 🚐🐱🌍
Thank you so much, Life with 9 Cats! Your kind words mean a lot to me. I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoy my positive vibes. It's comments like yours that keep me motivated to share my adventures. Safe travels to you too, wherever life takes you! 😊✨
We had a goldfish 🐡 with similar issues. 😊 We got him from Walmart where he had been with a lot of other fish. So when we got him home and he was the sole fish he would go after all of the food at once - really fast. Then he would go to the bottom to finish "chewing" it. (I know, goldfish dont have teeth 😂) But we guessed that this was how he had survived in the tank at the store. We nicknamed him "the gobbler" because he always gobbled up his food so fast.
Hey d.g.! That's such a cute story about your goldfish! 😄 It's amazing how animals can develop unique behaviors based on their past experiences. "The Gobbler" sounds like such a fitting nickname for him. It's great that you were able to provide him with a peaceful home where he could enjoy his meals without any competition. Thank you for sharing this adorable anecdote with us! 🐡💕
I’m not surprised you need a break from travelling - it’s hard work and connecting with people is what makes us human. I would really miss your videos if you were to stop though😢

Hey Isabel! Thank you so much for your comment and for your understanding. We definitely try to be patient with Sombrita, she's still learning. And yeah, it was a bummer about the meal mix-up 🫣 thanks for trying to help us feel better about it. Thanks again for your support and for watching our videos! 😊🌍🚐

Don't feel bad if you cannot stop Sombrítas food aggression. I have a rescue that I cannot take to the beach because she freaks out on all the dogs if she thinks I'm watching. She just has this crazy idea that she is showing her worth this way. I've tried a lot of things and have finally given up and she just stays home when we go. It's probably best since she is very nervous anyway. So some adjustments may have to be made but Sombríta is a sweet heart no matter what❤
Hey C Rocha! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It's important to prioritize our pets' well-being and find the best solutions for them. And you're absolutely right, Sombríta is still a sweetheart no matter what! Sending lots of love to you! ❤️
Good travel back to US, thank you for your videos in Brazil, and it's sad that you guys had this really bad restaurant experience just in the end of the journey in Brazil (and weirdly in one of the most fancy and touristic cities in the country). Nice rest and good luck in your next adventures.
Hi Tairon! Thank you so much for your kind words and well wishes. We really appreciate your support and are glad you enjoyed our videos in Brazil. Yeah, it was definitely a bummer to have a bad restaurant experience, especially in such a popular city. But hey, it happens sometimes, right? We try to focus on the positive and not let one bad experience ruin our overall impression of a place. Thanks again for your support, and take care! 😊✨🌍
Awe, she's so friendly and playful especially with other dogs. I love watching her run along the beach with other dogs. That totally makes sense and never considered that with stray dogs. I wonder how she does at doggie daycare? This is very good knowledge to know, because I'd like to adopt a dog someday.
Hey Zack! Thanks so much for your comment! I'm glad you're enjoying watching our adventures with Sombrita. Adopting a dog is such a wonderful decision, and I'm sure you'll make an amazing pet parent! Sending you positive vibes for your future furry friend! 🐾❤️
Hey Ruthie! Thanks for sharing your experience with your dog. It's always important to be cautious and make sure everyone is safe during these encounters. Keep enjoying those adventures with your loyal companion! 🐶💕
As any other people from the US you thought that Brasil was only jungle with snakes and jaguars walking down the streets. We know very well this kind of thinking about our country. So you were surprised to find roads, houses with people inside, cities with busy streets, metros. It's amazing to discover that there is life outside the rich world (USA and Europe), that other POOR countries also have organized life. Have a good trip discovering how underdeveloped and poor Latin American countries manage to live.
It's unfortunate, what's happening with Sombrita. But you're right: with rescue dogs, especially former street dogs, that kind of behavior is not at all uncommon. I've seen it so many times while running the rescue I had in the States that I've lost count. Even now, volunteering with a rescue in Costa Rica, I see the same thing over and over. Don't worry that it's something you did wrong because it's not. In fact, it sounds like you're doing things right. This will be a constant, lifelong battle, but think of staying ahead of the battle rather than winning it. What worked today may not work tomorrow. That's fine; try something else until you find what works...even for a while. Resist the temptation to stop taking Sombrita in public, because the less she's around other dogs, the more acute the problem will become. I wish you the best with all things, and remember... if Sombrita gets too guard-y with her food, just stick a piece of used gum on her bowl and that will slow her right down. 🤣🤣🤣 I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. Don't throw anything at me! LOL I share your horror about that incident....
Hey MichelQ! Thank you so much for your understanding and support regarding Sombrita's behavior. It's really comforting to hear from someone who has experience with rescue dogs and understands the challenges that come with them. You're absolutely right, it's not about winning the battle but staying ahead of it and finding what works for Sombrita. And don't worry, we won't stop taking her out in public because we know it's important for her socialization. By the way, that tip about the used gum on her bowl made me laugh so hard! I appreciate the humor and it's always good to have a good laugh, especially during challenging times. No worries, nothing will be thrown your way! 😄 Thanks again for your kind words and support, MichelQ! Wishing you all the best with your volunteering in Costa Rica. Keep making a difference in those furry lives! 🐾✨
