I bought this guitar the year that this video came out. I was in my early 20s. I ate Ramen noodles for every meal for the next eight months to afford it, and that’s no exaggeration. The guitar is aptly named Soupy Sales, and I play it to this day.
Sound is in the ear of the beholder. I was fortunate enough to visit a GC an demo a model from the 100 series up to the 800 series. I kept coming back to the ce214 deluxe. Not quite as warm as the higher series, but had more punch and spunk. Also the 300 up series have a slightly wider nut. My favorite sounding/playing of that day....the CE214 Deluxe. Doesn't have all the eye candy, but delivers the goods.
To me it’s about the playability on the guitar. I haven’t found a guitar that I enjoy playing more than Taylor’s. Martin is close, but still doesn’t compare. If you find a guitar that you don’t want to put down because you love playing it that much.. that’s the guitar. Who cares about saving more money if it doesn’t give you the same feel.
Mine feels awesome! Smooth, fast, all great aspects of owning a Taylor guitar. But... the tone on mine is for shite! Zero bass. Thin, splattery, just awful. No compensating through electronics, on-board or out-board. Mine is a P.O.S. as a performing guitar. Feels great! Selling it immediately.
I just got this guitar and I'm amazed by it. I only traded in 4 other guitars to get it...lol. By far, the best guitar I've ever owned. The pickup system in this is stellar. I did a side by side comparison with my other acoustic through a recording and it's like night and day. It's got a more natural tone to it. I won't own another acoustic...
John Patitucci Yo! Lol this guy just picked, and I play on a band with a lot of chord strumming. Does its chord and strumming sound and feel pretty good?
I just bought 214ce deluxe after debating between this deluxe version and the original 214ce. Although it's $200 more than the original, it has a slightly warmer tone (due to higher quality woods) and a significantly better pickup (Expression System vs ES-T). Plus, unlike the original, the deluxe comes with a hardshell case which alone is $200. IMO the deluxe version is an amazing guitar and a slightly better value than the original version although I preferred the looks of the satin finish on the back and side of the original.
best value taylor they sell seriously. the 200 series is by far my favorite. even though its super expensive, its the best you can get or at least the highest quality around $1000-$1300

But, the neck hurt my left hand muscles a little and I never got that from the cheep Alverez I have becuase the neck is thinner. I think the 100 series has a thinner neck but I want the Rosewood. +Louis Valentino I have left wrist problems too and I have made it worse over the years when I play guitars with too big of a nut width and/or neck depth. Trust your body, it's telling you something.
Louis Valentino I don't know about it being wide. Ive gone through several acoustics and it's about the same as most I've played. If you want a thinner neck look at a Seagull. I had a $500 one of those and it was one of the easiest necks to get my hands around

bought this guitar about 5 months ago for 1800.00 new, sounded good with the acoustic amp i used in the store, but once i plugged it into my own amp, it sounded way to thin, and bright, almost like it wants to be an electric guitar, i managed to fix the problem somewhat by using a bass amp instead of an acoustic amp, and now it sounds pretty decent, but playing live this guitar is really bad when it comes to feedback even with the phase switch flipped and a sound hole cover the guitar wants to scream like crazy
Got mine very lightly used 3 weeks ago for $800. It's exactly as you stated here. Listening fatigue was a huge issue about 15 minutes in to the gig. It's awful.
Camaro2017 I tried many Taylor’s when making my last purchase. Some friends play them so i was interested to try some out. Unfortunately I have to say I was totally underwhelmed. Personal taste I know but the tone was too bright, too clangy, and the feel was insubstantial. They have a great reputation and are very popular so they’re obviously doing something right, it’s just not for me. In the end I bought a Sigma which is superb.
Have you tried it with any other amps? This guitar may be a little picky when it comes to amps. I got one as a birthday present from guitar center and the employee picked one of the best amps for it witch is a Fishman Loudbox Mini.
Super late comment, but grab an EQ pedal and fix the brightness issue. Most players love Taylor’s because they sit perfectly in a dense mix. Solo though, they can be grating. Just remember literally every acoustic act at a brewery, far far too bright for most peoples’ ears.
Love this review. From anyone that has the guitar right now, would you say that the guitar sounds projecting without plugging it in. like on its own? I really want to get this car but I want to make sure it sounds good both.
Find one and see it in person every guitar projects different and has slight nuances even if it's the same model. I own the deluxe 214 rosewood and can confirm it's a fine instrument whether plugged in or not sounds very nice and is great to play.
For much less money chose the Cordoba Acero D10 or D10CE accoustic. I got the D10 and added a $49 Woody soundhole p/u. This guitar has complex beautiful sounds, massive low end, ebony fretboard, huidifier built into great case. Absolutely killer. Check out reviews.
Not sure if I want to get this Taylor model or the Maritn GCPA4? The Martin comes with a built in tuner on the preamp, where the Taylor does not have a tuner on its preamp. I know this is not a huge deal. A person can always buy a cheap clip on tuner. Not sure if I would like the Fishman preamp on the Martin? The 2 knobs are multifunctional. Which means it could be more time consuming getting the sound the way you want it. Versus having a 3 band EQ etc... I have never had a Taylor or a Martin. I have played a few Martins, but never played a Taylor. There is also another Martin I am considering. It was made for MF exclusively and is not part of Martins normal inventory. It is the JCPA4 Martin acoustic/electric. It sells for $1399 at MF and is all solid rosewood back and sides and is spruce on top. There are some good reviews on this guitar on Acoustic Guitar Forum website. Of course both Martins are a little more than the Taylor 214ce Deluxe G.A. Any feedback on any of these guitars out there anyone?
hey man. so I actually own the Martin GCPA4 rosewood and i have to say it's great. I spent about a month going around trying out many guitars in the $1000-2000 range and I couldnt be happier with the decision i chose. Originally I bought the Gibson Hummingbird Pro for $2000 but wasn't too satisfied with it. It just didn't sound too special, although it had a really round full sound it didnt have a distinct tone that drew me into it. I tried multi taylors and martins and went along with the GCPA4. The sound is very warm and extremely crisp. The rosewood gives it the better more resonating sound compared to the others one. There are two different type of fishmen pickups installed, both amazing. The only drawback I see is that the neck is kind of thick. Besides that the guitar feels good. I think thats especially important, the strings dont feel clunky and are spread apart perfectly. I hope that helps man. I fully recommend that guitar.
You won't go wrong honestly. Both Guitars will suit to different styles so pick them up and try them out, if you buy one and want to try the other, guitar stores are usually pretty nice about letting you return it within a certain time frame if you find out it wasn't for you. The basic differences are that the Taylor will be a bit brighter, good for Rock kinds of songs, and the martin will be warmer, think blues and country stylings. As far as the pickups, at this price range, both are stellar. I own a Taylor 210 CE and its a transducer pick up, but it sounds very natural, the 3 knobs are a very classy way of integrating the electronics, the Fishman always put me off stylistically because it's not as visually integrated, but thats just my opinion.
As I play both Fingerstyle and Precussive guitar I wonder if the top of the guitar is 'scratchable'? Meaning it will make a scratchy sound if I drag my nails over it, or does it feels like plastic? Thank you
Is the "layered" rosewood really rosewood throughout? The Taylor website says the middle layer is poplar, with inside and outside layers rosewood. If anyone can answer, thanks in advance.
Played, one years, ago played great loved,it but for some reason can't believe didn't buy it I think as well they where about 300 pounds cheaper as well than now ended up with a finlayson gam 50ce still a great guitar been pro setup and, plays like a dream,go and try the taylor you will be surprised fine instrument
+Azoray Depends on what you are looking for. The Guild you have mentioned is a jumbo-sized guitar that is all-solid wood (Spruce/Rosewood combo). I like the solid wood aspect. Where I think you are better off with Taylor is how player-friendly the guitar is and quality control. I think you are less likely to have issues with a Taylor guitar than Guild guitar.
is it really a good demo? he did't even plug in the guitar..... so you just guess that the elec system is good by merely looking at it...... incomplete demo bro
I bought one of these six months ago and have had nothing but trouble with a it lot of buzzing. Local certified technician where I bought it here in Huntsville AL says he can't do any more with it. I'll have to take it to Nashville to get it fixed. I expected more from a $1200.00 Guitar. Bottom line not worth the money.
Layered back and sides is, in fact, laminated............by definition. Laminated wood is actually more stable than solid wood. The only question remains, "Is it all one species of wood?". If it's a combination, then the acclaimed wood used is actually just for aesthetics. If you glue up 4 layers of rosewood, it will have the same sound as solid rosewood. The human ear cannot tell the difference.
Have you ever called Taylor direct. They have excellent customer service and are always happy to answer any questions you may have. Great company. Try giving them a call and asking and report back here. I may do the same
I bought the 214ce deluxe a couple of weeks ago. It sure is a guitar compared to my older cheaper 300 dolalr Alverez. To me it is like playing on an electrical guitar neck it is so smooth and set up so well. It is so addicting to play this because it sounds so well. Make sure you have a humidifier to keep it that way!
Norman Zealand Malana If you go to Taylors website they have videos that show you the difference between a Layered and a laminated they are not the same.
So a layer of poplar and two outside layers of tonewood is layered? Sounds just like laminated to me. My Yammy LL6 ARE is specified to have laminated rosewood back and sides. It has a sandwiched piece of meranti wood. Many companies do that and label them "laminated". I'm not a luthier so I could be wrong, but, it's either many guitars labelled "laminated" are actually layered or layered and laminated are one and the same.
laminates normally have a man made layer, Taylor use's the term layered because it is all wood and no man made materials are used so they dont use the term laminate. Taylor does this because they can get eight times the use out of the wood compared to a single guitar. What you have on the 214 is a layer of rosewood then a layer of Sapele then another layer of rosewood, by doing this you get the sound of rosewood cut cost and save ALOT of trees. Which is great because alot of our tone woods used in guitars are becoming very endangered. Sit down with a 214 and give it a play they sound great and better then alot of guitars that cost double there price. Also the layer is only used on the back of the guitar the sound board is solid.
What did that guy mean by too much money for a layered guitar isn’t it an old wooden guitar Rosewood and Sprucetop Rosewood back inside if it’s layered what is meant by layered I suppose I could Google it but you let me know because it’s pretty pricey I hope it’s a really good quality for the money 1500
Call the manufacturer call Taylor direct. They have excellent customer service and they always answer questions like this why do people never think to call the manufacturer who made the f****** guitar
Trust me, I have owned both the 214ce and just recently returned it and bought the 214ce DLX. There is a distinct difference in tone. The DLX sounds much warmer, fuller as well as louder....not sure if it's the gloss finish or what but there is a difference. I spent the extra money and got the more expensive model. And the case the DLX comes with is to die for.
I Can't Find It There Is No Taylor Guitars Acoustics Taylor 214ce Deluxe But They Don't Haven't In Guitar Store Well That Was Wrong Guitar Store That's Terrible Hey You What Go To The Peoria In Doctor's Appointment And There's Guitar Center Store In Peoria
I have this guitar. When I run this guitar through my AER 60 3 amp I cannot get a nice sound. In other words it sounds terrible. There is that snappy sound all the time. So I'm not so happy when I play this guitar through my amp. But is sounds great when I just play it at home.
Taylor makes amazing guitars. At this price point this guitar is a poor value. You can get a Canadian made all solid wood Seagull with equal playability and better tone Woods for less. You can buy an S6 cutaway with high pressure laminate cherry that is extremely resonate solid top and put a K&K in it for $450-500 depending on the top Woods . That’s just one example and there are more that are much better value. That new Fender solid wood series for instance.
I'm not sure that seagulls have the same resale value as Taylor's do and that might factor into the price as well but you can also look online and look for sales on these guitars I found one today for $600 used and it's got a couple blemishes but it's still insane deal for that price I don't ever spend retail on guitars so I get what you're saying but to compare Taylor and Siegel is really your comparing apples and oranges
Great guitar playing,by a very nice guy. I have a Taylor 8 series the E System/pickup was crap "I noticed we never heard it here, guitar was Mic'd up instead" my pickup broke down 2 times, the first time it cost me £250/400 bucks to fix, the second time I replaced it with a Baggs, job done. Taylor guitars are really good, Taylor pickups are really bad.
No wonder that everytime they make review or demo in youtube, they usually use microphones and not plug in...... yamaha silent guitar is far more better than taylor, the only thing is that you need more battery, but the sound? Best....
Bill gave a decent explanation but I didn't care for the demo. Played the same crappy song for 4 minutes. Why not add some strumming with a pick and a little flatpicking? Also, they should plug it in so we can hear the ES2 in action. I have the dreadnought model of this guitar. It's good, but I wouldn't pay full retail for it.
HAD ONE OF THESE SUCKERS. LOOKS GREAT - SOUNDS OVERLY BRIGHT - ACTION FOR A GUITAR AT THIS PRICE WAS WAY TOO HIGH - TENDED TO FEEDBACK THROUGH MY FENDER PRINCETON AMP FOR SOME REASON SO I HAD TO PITCH THE BITCH. THE STAINLESS STEEL FRETS ARE PART OF THE OVERLY BRIGHT PROBLEM.
you like to troll everything Taylor don`t you? Plus you know nothing about the guitar IF you actually had one. Taylor does NOT use stainless fret. Never has never WILL. Only idiots play acoustics through and electric guitar amp. My 816ce with the ES NEVER feeds back but then I do not run it through an electric amp or maybe try gain with it. duh! but troll on as you keep showing your stupidity!
TRICK-OR TREAT yeah bro lee samuelson said exactly what i was going to say except i have a 114 ce and thats even a worse guitar and i dont have problems :/
Unfortunately people just believe what other people say. I’ve been around long enough to remember when Takamine had the same sort of reputation as Taylor’s today. It took a long time but eventually people realized that most budget Takamine guitars were not worth their Price Point. This is not worth $1500-$1600. It’s a $700 value at best. They don’t even remotely sound as good as a 300 or 400 series Taylor. There are other laminate back solid top guitars that play and sound equally as good with better dynamic range and sustain at less then half the price. Buying this guitar is like over paying for an entry level Mercedes, Audi, or BMW, when you could have got a much better performing Acura, or Lexus .
Hey man you seem to know alot about this stuff. I wanna get a high end laminate guitar (because of the rigidity), do you have any suggestions for good sounding laminated guitars?
Taylor is over priced like hell. I have a community of about 400,000 people and I do not recommend Taylor there are a lot of good options that can do the job good enough
Taylor’s US factory is in San Diego, CA. The factory in Tecate, Mexico is only about a 45 minute drive between the two. The same production management team is shared between the two factories and they are there for around half their work week, keeping the quality consistent between the two. I wouldn’t write it off too quickly.

Thank you
Martellen I have one on my lap right now and I drug my nails across it and no sound unless you tap your mail on it, and it feels really smooth.
I want this guitar.
I don't know how to have this or to buy it?
Rosewood is it the “best sound material” for guitar? If not, what is it? Tanks!
That's all up to your own opinion, it only really makes a difference for acoustics though.
Do you ever change your shirt, Sir? Just curious, nice review as always, though...:)
Is the "layered" rosewood really rosewood throughout? The Taylor website says the middle layer is poplar, with inside and outside layers rosewood. If anyone can answer, thanks in advance.
rose-poplar-rose
Very thin layer of rosewood on surfaces, then about 2-3mm of poplar.
Amazong guitar but I noticed pitch issues needed to be fixed after 6 months.
214 ce dlx vs 414ce standard?
what is the song in the song he is playing?
I'm replying to a five year old comment so I don't know if you care anymore, but I think he's playing the After You've Gone
How much this guitar is?
I have this guitar and I ❤️❤️❤️ it worth every penny
Which guitar?
The 214ce dlx sorry for late response
Played, one years, ago played great loved,it but for some reason can't believe didn't buy it I think as well they where about 300 pounds cheaper as well than now ended up with a finlayson gam 50ce still a great guitar been pro setup and, plays like a dream,go and try the taylor you will be surprised fine instrument
Is this guitar better quality as the guild f-150 RCE?
+Azoray Depends on what you are looking for. The Guild you have mentioned is a jumbo-sized guitar that is all-solid wood (Spruce/Rosewood combo). I like the solid wood aspect. Where I think you are better off with Taylor is how player-friendly the guitar is and quality control. I think you are less likely to have issues with a Taylor guitar than Guild guitar.
Love mine.
Good demo, man. Is that mic an AKG 414 or 412?
is it really a good demo? he did't even plug in the guitar..... so you just guess that the elec system is good by merely looking at it...... incomplete demo bro
How much?
It has no built in Tuner?
BukChoi Bros no
Get you a clip on tuner. Problem solved. They are better anyways
Just learn to tune why do u need a tuner
+Derren Brown omg they are so inaccurate
Strobe tuner man
song in clip , please . thanks
How much dollar??
Can I use 0,13 strings?
Use extra light string bro
I bought one of these six months ago and have had nothing but trouble with a it lot of buzzing. Local certified technician where I bought it here in Huntsville AL says he can't do any more with it. I'll have to take it to Nashville to get it fixed. I expected more from a $1200.00 Guitar. Bottom line not worth the money.
Mr Wayne What kind of buzzing?
Because usually that happens with dryness for Taylor's, like humidity issues.
I keep it stored in the case with the Toylor recommended himidipacks by D'adarrio.
I have nothing but good results. I got mine brand new for 900.00 with hard shell Taylor case. Well worth the money
If it’s buzzing the neck has an issue or it’s set up wrong. I have one, plays beautifully.
Great guitar :-)
Nice guitar
Layered huh? Laminated.
I'm not a luthier so I could be wrong, but, it's either many guitars labelled "laminated" are actually layered or layered and laminated are one and the same.
layered is different then laminated which is why they are different words. Its not hard to find the info on the difference
Mandolin Jam So most laminate guitars are actually layered and are better than laminates?
laminates normally have a man made layer, Taylor use's the term layered because it is all wood and no man made materials are used so they dont use the term laminate.
We are at Guitar Center
World famous Guitar Center...
how much???
$1199.00, wait for the 15% off coupon from Guitar Center and it will cost $1020.00
Nice axw !
where can i play the song in clip , pless
how much is this guitar? everyone
+Minh Tuy Thập can get the natural for $1200 at most of the usual online retailers like musicians friend.
Yes ...thank you
there's a cheaper style of this guitar that's pretty much the same except for the inside. it's just the 214 ce regular not delux
Are side and back laminate?
Yes. The sound won't open up over time like a solid wood will, but it sounds great right out of the box and is less prone to humidity issues.
I have an S6 and it's fine - this Taylor is on another level IMO. I didn't want to put it down. Laminated or not, it's the real deal.
I just got this and it is way too tinny and bright. I actually like the 114e better than this thing!! taking it back
EyesOpen37 The 214 is not more tinney & bright than the 114. Your new strings are the cause. Give it a little more time.
the expression system let me down. I'm installing an LR Baggs Element VTC into my 414ce. I do love Taylor though.
+michael dickinson I've heard the same thing.
No wonder that everytime they make review or demo in youtube, they usually use microphones and not plug in...... yamaha silent guitar is far more better than taylor, the only thing is that you need more battery, but the sound? Best....
I Am Fernando & Sorocaba But I Am Speak Portuguese In Bola De Cristal
taylors are amazing but I don't just have thousands to spend on a guitar :(
***** interesting. I'll look into it thank you maybe I can save up for one or find one on craigslist one day :)
Privilege Well to get an amazing guitar costs alot of money, my perfect dream guitar is a Martin Om-42
+Kate Kitchens Yamaha fg700s
เยี่ยมเรยย good
Too much money for layered ...
In a way, yes. But solid guitars nowadays are even more expensive! So compared to the solid versions, this one is priced 'normally'.
shouldn't say "the original 214CE's layered back and Side" (paraphraseing) because the original 214s are real wood not layered , and USA made.....
Picked up a used one for 600 bucks
Lee Samuelson Yes why try playing an acoustic through an electric guitar amp duh. Even a good keyboard amp would work better than an elec. guitar amp!
TRICK-OR TREAT yeah bro lee samuelson said exactly what i was going to say except i have a 114 ce and thats even a worse guitar and i dont have problems :/
BUT,,, It's not even solid body wood!! for 2000.00 $$$$????
$1000+ is a lot of money for a mostly laminate guitar made outside of the U.S...
and yet if you compare it to most of the guitars he reviews, it sounds a lot better and also plays a lot nicer.
I just fooled an online simp into buying one for me. Its great!

It seems you're too shy to plugg in?....... ummmmm....
8,000$
99 percent of the sound quality comes from the top wood and bracing.
if you want to sell a guitar just play it...it should sell itself
Plywood! - by nature loses the "tonal qualities" No?
Who here can give me an acoustic guitar here?
Taylor is over priced like hell. I have a community of about 400,000 people and I do not recommend Taylor there are a lot of good options that can do the job good enough
What do you recommend
@@mikerivers1402 A lot so many and as for brand Yamaha is always good option with that money you can get much more out of it
Beautiful guitar ...shame it's made in Mexico.
Taylor’s US factory is in San Diego, CA. The factory in Tecate, Mexico is only about a 45 minute drive between the two. The same production management team is shared between the two factories and they are there for around half their work week, keeping the quality consistent between the two. I wouldn’t write it off too quickly.
Hey everyone this guys a big RACIST!!!
dumb question. Is Taylor guitar from Taylor Swift? lol/......
Nope, but Taylor Swift has a signature Baby Taylor guitar. Taylor guitar company has been around since the 70's.
not to offend but yeah...dumb question lol
No it's from bob taylor
bituco94 thank you for showing me some respect *wink wink
James James Taylor owns it
Not really tho
