I think you're absolutely right. It's definitely a struggle, though. I make retro-style games, and it's hard to make the kind of games I like, release them, and see them generate no interest. I often wonder something similar to what you mentioned, "Am I a bad game designer?" But it would be the worst thing to build a game for the sole purpose of having it succeed. That's where we get all those crappy shovelware games, after all!
Ah, but your channel? Talking about Simpson's Hit and Run? Jedi Power Battles? ...Evergrace of all things? This sounds right up my alley. I'll have to check it out. :D

Exactly! I think there's definitely a part of the creative process that is for other people, but I think the core has to come from our desire to put good stuff out into the world. I'd love to check out some of your games!! That sounds awesome. Thanks for commenting :)

I had a similar thing to this last year; I draw stuff and post it on twitter (ew) and I was trying so hard to have a perfectionist artstyle similar to someone else I knew that i was burning myself out from drawing at all, so I ended up having this long stretch of time where I didn't draw at all, but then I came back to it and started being more experimental and started doing what I wanted to do and my artstyle looked better and more unique, but most importantly I was having fun making it

Getting to the Partner threshold (1k subs, last I saw) is important, but for motivation and growth, I found that even 1 person who actually likes your content enough to watch a few of your videos is worth thousands of people who watch 1-2 minutes of one video and leave forever.
P.S. I definitely got recommended this for watching that NeatOnTheRocks video.

NeatOnTheRocks CRUSHED it with his video, that's so funny it led you here lol! And I totally agree, hitting the partner threshold is a very cool goal and motivator, but having the folks who really stick around and form a fun little community is WAY more valuable in my opinion. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

This, all the way. Building a community of likeminded people can help, lots of my friends also do RUclips, art and so on. Loving what you do and having friends makes the experience so much more enjoyable ❤

I don't have much of anything to add, but as a musician this really speaks to me! I found a lot of myself in you when you were describing the ways you'd hit creative pitfalls, and how it affected what you were making. Bravo! I love waxing philosophical but I also love retro games so I'll have to stick around I think :]

I will say there is definitely a sweet spot with how much fame a channel has. I've seen channels start off with very little subs that would respond to every commenter and would make some interesting videos you could tell they were passionate about. Those viewers would also return for most of the content creator's videos and it built up a small community. Then over the years, they go viral, they reach the 6 and 7 figure subs range, the quality of the channel goes downhill, they rarely respond to comments, they use cringy click baity thumbnails, and have annoying sponsored videos that no one cares about.
I refuse to go down that route and try to chase the almighty algorithm. I make videos whenever I want and I consider my channel as a hobby. If a video I make does well, cool. If not, oh well. Most of mine are "Evergreen" and I'd rather make those types of videos than catching the latest gaming news trend that quickly becomes outdated.
