Such a worthless thing to lie and brag about, too. Like he could've just said that he *likes* to play Path of Exile, but isn't very good at it. There's no shame in that. It's actually way more relatable for a lot of people.
But his massive ego wont let him put his pants on one leg at a time. He wants to compete with everyone at all times, which shows how miserable his life is at the core. Not that i feel bad for him either.
He needs to realize gaming culture isn't like other things, we relish in both success and failure as long as it's honest. Truth is number 1 to gamers. We spend our freetime on fiction, but we won't be sold a lie.
If a man is petty enough to lie about something, this little. Then, going on to the top podcasts in the world bragging about it. I can only imagine what else this man lies about.
Well, there's "self-driving, we have it now, and will roll it out next year" for the past decade or so. Or how about "For $3bn of your tax money, I'll put American boots on the moon again", and $3bn later he managed to launch an empty cylinder into orbit, and one with a payload of _one whole banana_ halfway across the globe (sadly, without hitting orbit)? Those StarLink receivers he gracefully donated to Ukraine when that war broke out? Where it turned out he donated half, and had the American government donate the other half after charging them double price for them, meaning he didn't lose a cent in revenue on that whole "donation"? Or how about "I'll make space flight so cheap you can literally use rockets instead of airplanes"? And when you look at what he charges, well, it was the opposite of "cheaper" and he raised the price when the Russian competition became persona non grata. This after inventing the reusable rocket, which Nasa had already invented decades ago and written off as "not worth the effort" as it costs more to refurbish it than to just build a new one from scratch. Then again, the man does have a tendency to invent things that already exist... And who could forget those solar rooftiles he demonstrated, which turned out to be regular roof tiles? The Semi that would revolutionise road transportation, which has an abysmal range and can carry a fraction of what regular trucks can handle on account of the weight of the batteries? The Roadster 2 that if it actually had the range he promised would be twice as tall due to the _fucking laws of physics_ and the energy/volume ratio of Li-Ion cells? The Hyperloop? I could go on, but this comment is long enough already.
I kind of miss the days when being a gamer was seen as loser behavior. Games were made out of passion, people didn't pretend to be one, and it was really just an exciting time. Now it's all corporate, fake, and boring. At least some of the Indie games are getting pretty good. A lot of slop too, but still, it's something.
One of my direct coworkers left Treyarch so he can get a job at SpaceX because he was a huge Elon fanboy. He got a job as a coordinator. He quickly stopped being an Elon fanboy once he started working there. He explained to me that most the people there are young men, straight out of college, who are willing to work 80 hour weeks because they want to impress Elon. My friend was already in his 40s at that point so he didn't have the energy for that. After a year, he left SpaceX and went to Activision because Activision treated him better.
"because Activision treated him better." Well, that's a very low bar to clear. My question is: if it's a bunch of 20-somethings that don't know too much, who the heck is responsible for catching a rocket the size of the statue of liberty? We can lampoon Musk all we want, but, at the end of the day, SOMEONE'S putting in the work to catch 300 foot rockets. Those people are fantastic.
I call BS. Elon Musk is the #1 richest man, automatically resulting in gigatons of sour grapes who would make up or exaggerate anything bad they can think of. There is no way in the real world that poorly run companies filled with fresh interns can be the generational pioneers that SpaceX and Tesla are. Both for over 20 years. Even throwing money at it can't make it happen. The only people who do not understand are those who have never run businesses before.
The livestream of the SpaceX launch in Boca Chica today showed a bunch of the employees gathered to watch it. It was mostly younger men with a few older people sprinkled in.
The ego of a man who has never succeeded at anything on his own. Who either had things given to him, or paid for the achievements of others to give him unwarranted credibility.
The lie, is a BRANDing exercise, so people think he is one of the people - because people wont insert a brain chip into their bodies, if raytheon makes it with the MIC in the background
I am so ready for the based-right to finally come around to the Elon-is-cringe era. The sooner Trump dumps him, the better. Money can give a man a lot of power, but real power trumps money. Elon doesn't control an aircraft carrier.
That mug looks cool (for a Minecraft fan, I guess), but it also looks like it‘s not doing a very good job at the things mugs should be good at, like being able to be held comfortably and being drunk out of.
It's hysterical how if Elon just came out and said "alright guys you caught me, I was botting or paying someone to boost me haha", he'd still be a loser but he'd be a loser I could at least laugh at. The fact he's doubling down by trying to smear Asmon's reputation, which only FURTHER PROVES he was faking it since why wouldn't you choose to prove him wrong, takes him from a silly loser to a genuinely pathetic person. You turned a silly allegation about being dogshit at a video game into tarnishing any and all credibility you had with people? It's genuinely impressive how desperate he is to have his ego boosted.
Fighting with Asmongold is absolutely the worst thing Elon could do. Elon's first reaction should have been to do a live interview with Asmongold and just be truthful about everything. 99% of gamers have existing goodwill toward Elon but he's burning through that now.
billionaires need no men. like someone to be like "no man this is a bad idea you need to damage control not double down" not people sniffing his farts and amping him up
I don't really care about 53 year old billionaires pretending to be good at games, but doxing people and abusing his power like a petty kid over his lies is different.
we live in a mad world sometimes why is an 50 year old man upset at getting criticize and pretending to be good at games, this such a nothing burger that he turned into jumbo sized one.
he did not lie though... stop listening to the idiots on youtube. you can find his gaming streams online and watch them for yourself. he has streamed hundreds of hours of the game.
I will be completely honest, I totally suck at videogames. For games like Fallout 4 I use mods that keeps my character alive. And for a baseball game, the sliders are adjusted to be in my favor. So, yes, I stink at video games. But, I play them to have fun, not to showboat.
Similar. I'm OK at some, I stink at others. I don't require, nor wish for assistance in the form of mods or turning down the difficulty, but there are some genres I simply can not get past the intro levels. Assuming I even get that far. Precision platformers, "bullet hell" type shooters, that kind of stuff. Instead I just gravitate towards more forgiving genres. Point n' click adventures, puzzle games, RPGs, story-driven platformers with a more forgiving gameplay (think Limbo, Mark of the Ninja, Dust: An Elysian Tail, ...) Braid? Yeah, tried it, too hard. Celeste? Same. I would love to be good at those games, but I'm not, and I'm OK with that.
explaining the link between his AI endeavour and self-portrait as a gamer was very interesting, thanks for bringing that point into the drama! makes hella sense
Look, he shouldn't be lying about it, because honestly, it's not that big a deal. I'm not sure if I read this on one of Asmon's vids or somebody else's, but people were saying if they were getting paid to play for him, they would just write detailed reports, give constant updates, and make sure everything is already grinded for lol. That's perfectly fine, especially since this dude runs multiple companies and there is no humanly way to do that and have the time to be a top gamer. He just needs to own up that he paid someone to play on his account and all that drama will disappear.
If he's lying at something as mundane and insignificant as being the best player at a video game. Then he's capable of lying about more important stuff. That's what makes this whole drama much more troubling.
Reminds me of that line in Ian Fleming's MOONRAKER (the book, not the movie): James Bond's boss "M" says that despite everything Drax is famous for, M has one nagging doubt about his true character: "Sir Hugo Drax cheats at cards."
I have worked in the “bleeding edge” sector of technology for some time now - and although I have no direct experience with Musk, I have more than one close associate who has - and the best description I have heard, opined after a single, multi hour meeting with a group of high level tech experts - “Everyone says this guy is some kind of super genius - and maybe he is - but he hasn’t got the first clue about how ANYTHING works.” I have no reason to doubt my close associate of more than four decades.
I remember spending nights on the streets with some homeless kids when I was a teenager and rich kids thought it was cool to pretend to be homeless... Humanity started confusing me ever since.
@NerveFlux because life is a struggle for everyone but no one wants to admit they had it easier so they fake struggle. We see this in the victim race often
I remember being in class telling a protestor I wasn't entitled, I had to work my way up from nothing with no parents to sign for my school loan and earn a spot in an apprenticeship and they said back to me. 'White people don't have broken families'. And the person who said it seemed very white to me but... whatever. Sure got a lot of nails in our tires after those same protestors quit to argue work ethic only supports the oppression of others. The sabotages came again and again... I was lucky to survive just trying to do a job... The only ones who understood what was going on at the time were the lawyers. So this is what they wanted me to do with that education? Stand up against protestors who want hand outs and not hand ups. Because of laziness? Communism?

I think it's a little more than what you said. I think before he bought twitter, he probably was genuine about his thoughts on free speech. However, something I've noticed, at least with myself, is that the more you interact with short-form content(short videos, tweets, etc), the more temperamental and unhinged you become. For example, earlier today I downloaded Instagram to enjoy some reels. And the more I watched, the more I engaged, the more I started noticing myself becoming rapidily more unstable and angry. This is something I've noticed that happens to me with any short form content that isn't just random clips from a TV show, dumb jokes or half naked women doing viral memes/dances/challenges. Now, admittedly, my my particular brand of autism came with some interesting temper problems. Which leads us to two possible conclusions. Either I'm only experiencing that because of my temper problems, or my temper problems make me a canary in the coal mine. I do not think the former is the case. My primary evidence for this is the TikTok NPC trend. No healthy human mind concocted that idea. And it started surfacing long after TikTok became entrenched. I guess what I'm trying to say is, few people will ever be able to maintain their sanity while taking short form content in anything other than small doses. And Musk has been taking way more than a small dose.
There is honestly something to this, 5 years ago when I deleted my Facebook account because I realized it was making me depressed I looked into it at the time and there have been studies indicating that the constant bombardment affects us negatively.
It was a very dumb thing to do. If he'd just started a character at level 1 and fucked around, he'd have had plenty views on his stream and plenty good rep. And even IF someone would try and make fun of him, it's trivial to defend against. Just lament you're too busy to invest the time you'd like to.
If you had a problem with women of a particular persuasion pretending to like games, then you should have a problem when ANYONE is pretending, especially one of the richest men with ulterior motives. A lie is a lie. I don't like fakers and liars.
In all fairness, Blizzard tried this by employing Jeff Kaplan as the head OW dev. Nothing against him (OW had sunk afterward). But, while this relatablility does work with getting people behind a project, it does not practically make said project successful.
elon is basically doing what he have always done, he doesn't know anything about the companies he own, because he's an investor, he knows how to work with his money, he buys a company, invests into it, and basically takes the credit, for example when he bought that space company and changed the name to "space x" he started talking as if he knew about the area and writing simple math stuff that you learn at the beginning of uni (no exaggeration btw) and saying how he was "revolutionizing space travel" even tho he does nothing, he just puts his money in, he did the same for twitter, bought it, changed the name, had no idea how to run the website and still fumbles around not knowing what to do, and if he tries to get into the video game industry, the same will happen, and with AI of all things, we can already see the low quality in the horizon, btw sorry about my bad english, when my texts become too long i get lost
See, this is accurate. Finally, someone that can put their finger on it. I will add that Elon tends to acquire something, try to dabble in it, and have a massive screw up. That said, he DOES gradually learn. I can respect that he does at least learn more to become better informed about the business. He did a 180 on many things once he was actually properly informed. I believe all we're seeing here is the same pattern in a new field.
Any gamer above age 10 with any common sense would know that he's boosting, so it's obvious that he's either trying to fool non-gamers, or he was always aware that he would be exposed and did it anyway because he felt it would be funny.
The problem is that he foolishly torpedoed his credibility. And while it's only about video games, it raises questions about his actual intelligence, competence and judgement. What if he is just a somewhat above average intelligent guy who happened to get rich due to a snowball effect, nepotism, luck, a modicum of business skill, and him utilizing the facade of genius well, because his personality is a little off and quirky? Just imagine you are a game designer, you are world renown and have plenty of money. Can you imagine how easier it is to create a good game and get rich from it, if good people are lining up to get hired by you, if you have the funds needed, and marketing is on easy mode?
I'm pretty sure he'll be fine. The millionaires and billionaires who invest in his companies don't GAF about this. I don't like Elon, he's just a hype man (the most successful hype man in history) but this story is a nontroversy.
Happened to get rich? He was born rich. He had everything handed to him. He wasn't born to a poor family working 4 jobs and living out of a tarpaper shack. His family owned a fucking emerald mine, amongst other big investments.
elon actually did something similar last week when he torpedoed his position being for h1b visas. funny seeing him lose credibility in a different way so soon after. some are joking saying hes holding citizenship ransom to people grinding his poe account lol
Lost all credibility? People are taking this video game drama way too seriously. How is this taking precedence over actual issues? This is being blown WAY out of proportion.
When you are privileged enough to don't have any real life problems, you start to find things like this a problem. Nothing against them, is just a very different point of view in life.
"He lacks the intelligence to understand he's not that smart" bruh he made a bad decision but you're overselling it. He has 100 balls in the air netting him billions in 3 innovative industries but he drops one ball in gaming of all things and now "he's not that smart"? Call him petty or unwise sure but attacking his intelligence is just silly.
In his place, I would've owned that, then do a steam with Asmon to show how crappy I am at playing, but also getting laughes while learning the ropes of the game. Or just admit that I Pay 2 Win like modern players with deep pockets. People would've respected that. But common sence is a rare item these days.
Vara Dark also covered it. And while some may find this insignificant or unimportant, allow me to say that it IS indeed significant and important - in A LOT of ways. And, this actually both verified some of the thoughts I had about Elon Musk from before, and also opened my eyes further to his nature. I had my own reasons to consider him an idiot before, but this is nothing I could have imagined. I guess I didn't want to see it for the most part, but now my eyes are open.
If he had just said, "I want to start a game studio, but I don't play games. Join me on my journey to becoming a gamer," then did collaborations with gamers who are prominent in the space where he learned from them, I think he might have gained a lot of goodwill from the community.
Am I the only one that would have been disappointed if he didn’t boost or something. Look I’m glad he likes to game, but I would be terrified if he was actually spending the time to level up into the upper 90’s. Especially with what’s on his plate now days.
Didn't he get mad back when those kids were trapped in the cave, and the main rescue guy told him his plan was stupid? Started accusing him of being a PDF-file or something.
He did, that's when I lost all respect for Elon, you just do not call someone that. The rescuer called Elon's offer a PR stunt and told Elon to stick his sub where it hurt. Sure Elons sub worked as long as it was in a large area. But it couldn't get around some of the tight spaces that you had to get through in the cave, not only that but a single sub wouldn't have helped much at all, and then there was the fact you had to get out of the water multiple times.
What i find crazy about this is that this news came like a day before the Pirate drama, but the Pirate drama was apparently more important to the gaming community (at least the PC gaming community) and so we're only now getting around to talking about Musk paying for his PoE account 3 days later
The idea that you have to play a certain game and be at a certain level and be the best gamer in the world sounds like a strange hill to die on to me. I don't even play POE2 nor do I plan too simply because it's not the sort of game I play. Doesn't mean I'm not a gamer. You would think someone like Elon would have better things to do with his time but apparently not. He wants to pretend he's still 'one of the boys' like he couldn't do that just be simply playing the game normally.
I just wanna know how no one thought this might happen if a guy with Assburgers becomes the richest 13 year old man in the world? Elon is Gretta Thunburg with an ego the size of Texas.
This makes me think of when people starting tearing down statues because the people depicted had done something bad. It used to be that Winston Churchill could be respected for defeating the Nazi's, but know we have to also remember that he was an alcoholic and maybe a sexist. Elon can be very petty, and this whole drama is stupid and makes him look stupid, but he might be ultimately responsible for creating a network of satellites that can be utilised even in the face of natural disasters for helping people survive. I just think some things matter more then others. Gimme something more important then boosting on POE 2 and then I'll be mad at Elon, right now he just seems like the same flaws anyone can have.
@@ginacirelli1581 huh? I mean, not really. People lie, they are human. Hopefully they can be virtuous in other ways. Mostly it's hard to live in a world where people don't read? I really don't get where your comment is coming from. I'm not calling anyone a liar here...

Im a Elon fan , i really like him , his approach on many things is relatable but this .... this is the dumbest thing you can fake flex for a person of his intelligence and caliber
I'd add that he doesn't care to appeal to be a pro gamer to other gamers, because the investors he needs are not gamers, therefore he just wants them to know that he is a good gamer. That's the reality we live in
Regards what people think of Asmond, he is not a right or left winger. He will destroy you no matter what side of politics you are on. Elon is a child and even the diehard Elon bootlicker will be hard pressed to defend this.
The richest man in the world is like a teenager who is afraid that people will think he is bad at something. It reminded me of something a guy once told me about Musk: People associate money with intelligence, and that's not how this game works. Musk has money, but he is actually much more stupid than the average person, most people with money are more stupid.
I assure you, he is more intelligent than the average person, especially massively so in finances and mathematics. He is just morally questionable, selfish and unwise. But most people who turned millions into billions are quite smart compared to your average joe. People who are the heirs to fortunes, often less so, but this is not the case here.
The funny part is that being good at playing videogames doesn't even translate to being good at making good videogames. They are two very different and unrelated skill sets.
What benefits was he expecting trying to fake being a pro gamer? He's already so rich and successful, what was even the point of trying to pull this charade? This feels like more a case of childish beefing than some financial scheme.
Had Elon just be honest about not having enough time to play video games, nobody would have judged him for it. I would a thousand times respect a level 3 player that actually plays the game over a level 99 player that pays someone to do it for him.
Imagine being a billionaire, owning 3 of the most influential company’s in the world. Yet still needing validation from gaming nerds. What a time to be alive!
Elon did not lie about it though. its just you guys fail to do your research and understand him. He is literally a genius, and like most people with exceptionally high IQ's he does not do things like most everybody else does. they are quirky, they do things differently than the rest of us. The way he plays the game may not be align with how everybody else plays the game, but that is just the way he does it. it works for him, it works for his brain. The thing is that Elon has streamed HUNDREDS OF HOURS of him playing the game. the proof is right under all of your noses, its openly available on the internet for anybody to see, but for some reason you guys are just too lazy to spend the time to go out and get the truth about something before making your videos... instead, you just piggyback off of each other and just keep spreading false information and it gets compounded with each person and still nobody takes the time to find the truth about it.
Wow I didn't dig deep into that. Because as a gamer we take pride in what we play, be it getting 100% achievements, getting that best strategy or getting to that particular level. So if this is true, he isn't a gamer and will have no respect and trust.
Thank you for sharing the truth. I hate how people view wealth as a metric to define success or virtue. It's so rare to find people who see the world in a similar way to me.
He not only proved them right by going to Ad Hominem instead of accepting the simple task of showing his skill on camera and making Asmon work for him, but he also displayed not knowing what a "video Editor" is, confusing it with an Editorial Board Editor. And apparently the screenshots were old, so he had time to realize or research what his Editors were, but he jumped to his head canon that the "mysterious editors" were Asmon's shadow masters and a trade secret of him! 🤣 Must be frustrating he can't win the title of Top Gamer through a lawsuit, even Billy Mitchell would have a better case than him!
i dont mind that he pays someone for an acount, dude is busy and does not have time for the game grind, understandable. trying to pretend he grinded it himself tho...cringe
I actually think this is more than setting up a gaming company. He could sneeze the money out for that and money isn't his drive anymore. It's power he wants, convince gamers that he is amazing at games and they may vote for whoever he votes for or stands with in 4 years.
a game studio ran entirely by ai is such a shun on all the artists (dei excluded of course) and engineers who spent DECADES studying to get to where they are. Be it indie, AAA or just a person who loves doing art for games after a long day of work while doing a 9 to 5 elsewhere. While I know gaming had to grow, I seriously miss the days where it was just a group of pals funding their own future on a hope they could make a badass game. Investors is one thing but the power injection this lovely artform has gotten has served more harm than good.
Wierd times. I am indian and if a billionare say he plays video game and make video of him playing a game, people would laugh at him and doubt his maturity. Elon musk enjoys the freedom of people loving him as both businessman and a gamer and now his childish behaviour is going to ruin his reputation.
it's simple: elon musk is a grifter and very insecure. he wants to be adored probably because - judging by his comments about his father - has not gotten much appreciation and love as a child and young adult. he tried to weasel himself into the gaming sphere, because of his plans for a game studio. I mean he changed how twitter blocking works because his ex wife blocked him and he still wanted to see her posts.
The thing is, if he'd just said he likes games but doesn't have time to play them as much as he'd like and then streamed himself playing, that would have generated far more goodwill towards his AI game studio than his attempts to parade as the world's greatest gamer.
I remember pretending NOT to be a gamer. Times have changed. Turntables and all that.

In the west.
Thanks for sharing that. That is so sad to hear.
"because Activision treated him better."
Well, that's a very low bar to clear.
Cool story bro.

Nice people don't become billionaires. You need certain sociopathic traits to become that rich.

Point n' click adventures, puzzle games, RPGs, story-driven platformers with a more forgiving gameplay (think Limbo, Mark of the Ninja, Dust: An Elysian Tail, ...)
Braid? Yeah, tried it, too hard. Celeste? Same. I would love to be good at those games, but I'm not, and I'm OK with that.

It is a big deal, if you need to BRAND yourself as one of the people, because people wont take a brain chip from raytheon
But thats why he lied because nerds care.
If he's lying at something as mundane and insignificant as being the best player at a video game.

Yeah. Haha.
There is honestly something to this, 5 years ago when I deleted my Facebook account because I realized it was making me depressed I looked into it at the time and there have been studies indicating that the constant bombardment affects us negatively.

elon is basically doing what he have always done, he doesn't know anything about the companies he own, because he's an investor, he knows how to work with his money, he buys a company, invests into it, and basically takes the credit, for example when he bought that space company and changed the name to "space x" he started talking as if he knew about the area and writing simple math stuff that you learn at the beginning of uni (no exaggeration btw) and saying how he was "revolutionizing space travel" even tho he does nothing, he just puts his money in, he did the same for twitter, bought it, changed the name, had no idea how to run the website and still fumbles around not knowing what to do, and if he tries to get into the video game industry, the same will happen, and with AI of all things, we can already see the low quality in the horizon, btw sorry about my bad english, when my texts become too long i get lost

He did, that's when I lost all respect for Elon, you just do not call someone that. The rescuer called Elon's offer a PR stunt and told Elon to stick his sub where it hurt.
Sure Elons sub worked as long as it was in a large area. But it couldn't get around some of the tight spaces that you had to get through in the cave, not only that but a single sub wouldn't have helped much at all, and then there was the fact you had to get out of the water multiple times.

So if this is true, he isn't a gamer and will have no respect and trust.
Still don't know how you're supposed to 'prove' that it was you who levelled=-up a character.
Thank you for sharing the truth. I hate how people view wealth as a metric to define success or virtue.
It's so rare to find people who see the world in a similar way to me.
Too many people look at Musk and see him as their Jim Jones.
Must be frustrating he can't win the title of Top Gamer through a lawsuit, even Billy Mitchell would have a better case than him!
Kinda feels like a "how do you do fellow kids?" Situation
If he cuts $2 trillion off the yearly budget while shooting rockets into space he's the best gamer and beat Donkey Kong
i dont mind that he pays someone for an acount, dude is busy and does not have time for the game grind, understandable. trying to pretend he grinded it himself tho...cringe
Of all the narcissists covered in this story, I still like Elon better than the rest.
Let's do what we can to guide the games industry back to a place of passion, creativity, and fun.
