I wish people would get over dei as a whole. People need to have representation in media regardless of what people would say, does it need to be shoehorned into everything? No. Do people however still need representation without pandering. Yes. I am all for playing characters outside of my male white middle class privileged comfort zone as long as they are well written and not a pastiche character. The people that feel the need to live in an echo chamber of their own creation are in my eyes limiting their potential and growth. Games can be so much more than mindless skinner boxes designed to keep your lizard brain happy with constant dopamine and serotonin drip feeds. I would even go as far to say the modern gamer (of class) is tired of live service flash in the pan games that say nothing and mean nothing.

The game I was supporting was FF XIV, stepped away when the story of Dawntrail turned out to be a bit bland. After this I see no reason to go back for any reason.

Back when "Square Enix" existed as the separate entities SquareSoft and Enix, I was still in the "mid-teens to early twenties" years of my life and loved their games. I'll always have happy memories of those NES / SNES / PS1 classics. However, it's difficult to have sympathy for any company that habitually shoots itself in the foot. When my sympathy is gone, so is my financial support.

I went to their Twitter profile and the only post up was them calling the AI on Twitter biggoted for messing up pronouns. Honestly we could do without these people.

2 things will happen because of this - 1. If they create DEI games, we won't buy it. 2. If they make a game we like, we'll pirate it instead. Either way, Square won't benefit at all.

There is the difference between critic and death threats and we all know that there is enough crazy people who write the latter in social media.

I stopped buying EA games around 2015-16 and survived... maybe Square Enix is next.

The statement from SQE sounds like they've let a company known for ruining games with hamfisted "DEI" virtue signaling write something they are even less suited for than game narrative. This isn't just a very questionable position from a consumer perspective, it's also potentially harmful to business partners and in many cases either directly conflicts with the law, opens them up for legal action and/or puts them in a position to either take legal action with no realistic chance of success or be judged by not taking said action. Overly simplified: if I publicly announce to sue everyone that diffames me, followed by a flood of comments stating that I'm stupid and then take no action, then it could be laid out as me accepting being stupid as a factual statement rather than diffamation. It also does not sound like something pushed by established studios. Every game developer has gone trough phases where they produced something that simply wasn't good and at least traditionally, the ones making it their livelyhood have listened to critical feedback. This sounds more like the wording of a faudulent company hiding behind empty words, fearing to be exposed as such. Just like scammers/criminals will often resort to agressively threaten people with the goal of intimidating people into not challenging them.

In the presence of a genuine threat, it is rational to adopt a defensive posture. If engaging with a SquareEnix game where criticism is not allowed we are left with two options: 1) the game will be bad and not get better 2) possible bans, fines, or apparently legal action? Neither of those is worth the time or money expenditure, so people simply... won't. Their consumer base will move on to different games from a more reasonable company. You don't have to do much to convince people not to swim in shark-infested waters. The sharks will do that. Square just added a bunch of sharks to the water, and they shouldn't be surprised when all the swimmers get back onto dry land.

They had a good run. Been buying their games since the NES days. RIP.

Last game I bought from them was Bravely Default 1. Guess I'll keep not giving them any money for another decade or two.

This is a very boneheaded move on Square's part. This will backfire horribly own them. And when it does, they're going to look real stupid and be so flabbergasted over why their games keep failing and they keep losing money. In they're already in a very bad financial state as it is due to their recent failures. They really do not need any more problems right now since they're already on thin ice with alot of gamers at the moment.

How'd we all get here? Especially in gaming? This is all getting ridiculous.

It's obvious to everyone that this policy's sole purpose is to allow Square-Enix to silence people who are not going to like their upcoming DEI changes in games. They want to release games like forespoken and silence reviewers and online talk about how bad the game is under this policy.

Man...this off the back of a poor post-Endwalker expansion release has really diminished my interest in SE as a whole. Looks like I can stop wondering when I'm going back to FF14. There's always a chance they rescind this, but I'm not optimistic. I do disagree with one point: if people are bad to you, you do not need to respect them. You also don't need to call them names, but respect is off the table for some people. That said, I read a large part of their terms, and I cannot respect them anymore. Sounds weird to respect a company to begin with, but when they do a good job it's natural...and when they make you afraid to critique them, I cannot comprehend "respect" being anywhere near how I view them. Agreed with everything else you said. Holding back on my spitefulness to say I hope they change course.

Western gave companies love to squeeze every last money out of their customers while Japanese companies love to sue their own customers.

SquareEnix made sure I was never going to buy their games a long time ago. They've earned my distrust, anger, and disgust over time and the negativity is justified. 15, 16, and 7R were all garbage. They've ruined everything I grew up with. I was a fan for over 30 years. I used to buy all their games because they had that coveted Squaresoft label. I was loyal. They did this to themselves. I'm allowed to criticize and be angry. Criticism and opinions aren't harassment. Censorship is about hiding the truth. Not lies or "harassment." This trend is becoming common with Japanese based companies (that have western roots). It's concerning.

Having actually researched this a bit more, this is mainly due to harassment in Japan. Yoshi-P himself has been stalked and harassed by fanatics over changes in FFXIV, and well as having death threats sent to him, and SE offices have received bomb threats. Apparently this is a huge issue in Japan for gacha studios, idol companies, and animation studios as well. Remember the Kyoto Animation office firebombing? IMO they probably did this because of the backlash they got for Dawntrail.
