  • Today I’ll show you the easy way to install a trailer hitch at home using a motorcycle lift. My install is on the Lexus NX 300h (hybrid), which simplifies the process slightly compared to the NX 200t or NX 300 non-hybrid due to the less complex exhaust. Aside from the exhaust, all the other steps are identical.
UPDATE: My video going over the trailer wiring harness installation is out now, check it out here: • Lexus NX 200/NX 300 Tr...

Great job on this video! I really appreciate you having everything so well organized and prepared. Also, your taking the time and effort to make such clear shots in those tight spaces was really helpful. Thank you for making this!

I have maybe slightly above average handy man skills and with the help of your videos, I installed the hitch and wiring in 4 hours by myself. I didn't have a motorcycle lift so I just used different size boxes and blocks until I got the hitch in the proper position. One will definately need a rubber hammer to tap the hitch into final alignment with the bolt holes. On the hybrid model the exhaust is not really that much in the way so I just manuvered the hitch around it and didn't have to take the exhaust down. On the wiring, I found of the 2 holes with rubber plugs on the bottom and back of the trunk, the passenger side one is much larger. The flat 4 connector would not fit thru the opening so I bend the edges of the hole up slightly with pliers until the connector when thru. Then I just hammered the bent portions back down flat once the connector was pushed thru. I cut a slit in the rubber plug and stretched it over the flat 4 connector and put it back in the hole. I put aluminium tape over the inside and outside of this hole to make a better seal. I mounted the L-shaped bracket that holds the flat 4 connector to the plastic under the trunk on the passenger side. There is an access panel than removes with 1 screw so you can get behind the plastic to hold the nuts with a wrench to tighten them. It really turned out great! Thank you so much for making these videos. I will also post this comment on the hitch install video. I have photos but don't know how to add them to the comment.

It sounds like your install turned out great! Thanks for taking the time to post how it went, success story comments like this are great to hear and will help others when they try and do their hitch install.
Indeed the hole I used to pass the wiring through was small, I enlarged it a bit with a step drill bit and then cut the wires and soldered them back together to get the 4-pole connector past. It sounds like the passenger side method would have been a lot easier, had I not already screwed the connector mount onto the hitch.
I’m always glad to see my video’s helped someone. That was a big motive to make these two videos. There were a few hitch install videos already out, but done by mechanics with a lift, which is not as helpful for an average person in their garage. And nobody had made a wiring install video specific to the NX200/300. Modern cars are so complex to take apart I knew it could help people out, especially since the installation sheet you get with the wiring is not the greatest. So I figured why not kill two birds with one stone. I was already going to do it, why not film it too.
I don’t think you can put photos in RUclips comments, but feel free to message me on Instagram if you want to share your photos.

Thanks for this great video along with it's sister wiring video. I successfully installed the same hitch and wire harness on my 2020 NX300h, and without these videos I'm sure it would have taken much longer. I'm curious if you could offer any advice on ball height needed to pull one of the 1720lb harbor freight fordable trailers.

Thanks for the comment and happy to hear the vids helped with the install. The height from the ground to the top of the receiver on our NX is 13”, probably the same for you. I have used uhaul trailers before which have an 18” receiver height, so I got an adjustable mount and set it to 5” of lift. You’ll have to see what receiver height that trailer has and buy accordingly. You want your trailer to be as level with the ground as possible.
I forget if links work in RUclips comments, but this is a helpful guide:

@@BrenoAutoGarage Thanks for the response. I just measured the height to the top of my hitch tube and it was indeed 13". I'm still in the process of assembly my trailer, and while I'm not 100% sure if it's accurate I found somewhere else on the internet that maybe the height to the bottom of the trailer hitch was 15.5". If this is accurate than I am thinking I may be able to get away with a 2.5" rise on my ball. Thanks again for the confirmation of your hitch height and help.

My hitch did not come with the 4 bolts. What size and thread bolts and washers do I need to buy?

Here is a link to the installation manual, with the part numbers for the bolts & washers: assets.curtmfg.com/masterlibrary/13337/installsheet/13337_INS.pdf
From that sheet the bolts are M12x1.25, 35mm long, class 10.9. Washers 1/2” inside diameter, conical type, does not say outside diameter.
Normal washers would probably work also, something nice and big, and add some thread locker to the bolts. I believe the conical type washers are used similar to a lock nut to keep the bolts from working loose over time.

Great video, very well explained. Please wear knee pad, for demo video it's OK.
