  • We are facing a serious mental health crisis with teens under pressure like never before. In this NBC News Now Special we provide insight beyond the statistics by examining the causes of this crisis, what role social media is playing and what can be done to help young people. In “Teens Under Pressure: Mental Health & Social Media”, Savannah Sellers talks to a group of teens from Fairfax County, Virginia and speaks with the Education Secretary and Surgeon General who says, “youth mental health is a full-blown crisis in our country right now” and that better enforcement of social media age restrictions is needed.

I think that all high school kids, throughout history, have probably suffered from some social and mental health issues. The fact that HS kids are starting to identify, discuss, and cope with them this early on, may make for easier futures.

it's just fun to listen to these teens around 8min of the video. it's the same as I would complain about no motivation to study when I was a kid.

This is very true. Everyone in our family friends circle of kids who are in high school are experiencing mental health problems. It is an epidemic.

My girlfriends were just talking about our teen years and about the constant verbal abuse we received from the boys, some of us also physical violence. We grew up being used to being constantly mistreated by boys/men and nobody did anything about it. This is so normalized and these young men carry this behavior into life.
Add social media to that and how mean girls are to each other AND the algorithm which systematically targets vulnerable kids trying to sell them stuff, making them even more insecure about themselves.
Girls are told women are second class and that's just how life is. And that is unacceptable.

Sad to hear the news about this. It boils down to children learning to cope in an age where parents are focused on culture wars and not their kids.
A lot of these kids are quoting from stuff they read online. They are not qualified to address mental health on their own.

It’s important that teenagers find inspiration in their lives. They need to read philosophy, self-help books, motivational books, etc. worse if they have a problem/issue already going on. Those kind of thoughts and values from those books will make them be good people, give them a purpose in life, a motivation, instead of just surviving the day to day, they’ll be able to identify the right or wrong, have a sense of fulfillment, striving for excellence, etc.

I have and I do. They are not special. There are people right now who wonder if that rocket will hit their home, who wonder if when they wake up their shoes will still be on their feet, who wonder if they will have food 2 or 3 days a week.
I’ve been thinking about these college/HS kids today, those who get accommodations, who get catered to by the institution, the employer, society. Imagine being in a group of hunter-gatherers, living in a land where lions attack humans daily. All humans suffer the fear of this attack. Immensely. But to make the society work, to make it so that all can go about living, breathing, eating, reproducing, individuals in the society must take turns keeping guard with a dart gun for tranquilizing the lion(s). To use it, the darter must be in a close proximity to the lion. This increases the anxiety of the darter. Meanwhile, those safe in their homes and with the group, individuals among that group are so filled with anxiety about the lion, that society caters to them, ignoring the darter. The darters, being given less attention and resources, succumb to the lions, one by one, as resources have been allocated to quell the anxiety of the individuals who swear they can’t function, especially not as darters who practically ensure the longevity of the society. Eventually, the anxious are left and they must become darters, but cannot last more than a few hours.

The cell phones and some "bad applications" are BADLING disrupting the students education/behavior 100%. Also some of the parents are responsible for this because of their "BLINDES TO SEE THIS AND CORRECT THEM TO BECOME SOMEBODY TOMORROWS FOR THEIR OWN GOOD AND THE WELL BEING OF THE COUNTRY.

It's not that simple any more. Then you become the target of bullies because your the only kid without a smart phone, and you don't have a lot of friends because your not on social media. I was diffeent because I didn't have cable growing up, so when kids would talk about cartoons, I would have nothing to say cause I didn't watch them as they were all on cable. I just grew up watching the simpsons and the news because that's all that was free. That made me very different from other kids and they bullied the heck out of me. Bullies are always looking for something to separate you from the others to bully you on.

@@heyaisdabomb Focus on your studies and schoool activities and sports and family. I wasn't allowed a phone or social media and I was getting straight As, national honors society, Spanish club, band, science club and tennis. I left high school, went to college and I'm successful now with new friends and a relationship.
The kids who were stuck on the phones and social media that I knew stayed back in our hometown and are basically doing boring jobs that they hate and routine home lives and they are still on boring social media. Personally I find phones and social media boring.
