    If this was in Berlin I was at this show. I remember the backdrop but not the name of the venue. Anyway best gig I ever saw and especially memorable as I met Setzer when he came out front of the building after the show to share his bottle of JD and hang out. Happy days.

    Cool. Glad to find a young skin who's into the Cats. Thing to remember is that in UK skins originally listened to reggae and such sounds. In early 1980's there were skins who listened to the 2-tone/ska stuff as well. Not sure what they (or the US skins) listen to now. What I liked about the Cats was that they always supported the idea of different kinds of people coming to their gigs, skins, punks, hep-cats etc.

    You're right. The Wanderers was late '50's and early '60's stuff. I was just mad about Dion at the time. What I was suggesting was the idea of greasers versus skins from that film might have had a bit of an influence on Setzer. It's fun trying to recollect it all now. I saw the Cats in concert last year and it just felt like "Bring it back again!"

  • @goatboythemonkey

    The 'Cats couldn't get much of an audience on the east coast. They went to London in the late 70s and were a hit with the punk audiences. Their first two albums were released in the UK. These were later remarketed for the U.S. in the early 80s.

    I think the band was Don E Sibley and the Dixie Phoenix. At the end of the 70's this song was played all the time in the Rockin clubs, and we all used to sing to it, which I suppose is kind of childish, but such is life.

    I think you are right about mention of skins, as in the early 80's there was little difference between Scooter boys and skins.
    I seem to remember the tunes on the Wanderers where all origional 50's stuff, however it has been that long since I have seen I may be wrong.

    @Czechmate1967 Rockabilly was An American invention. These guys were not fighters (my dad was one). They only wore those pointy toe shoes for killing cockroaches in corners! lol... fighting would mess up their pompadores! ;)
    But there have been 4 generations of Rockabilly's going back to the Elvis Presley and James Dean of the 50's. In the 80's Rockabilly became an off of Punk. Therefore you also had Punkabilly and other variants. The 90's brought more Rockabilly styles & extreme Punk!

    as I remember, pretty much everything that wasn`t stadium rock was considered punk. People were ignorant back then. And yes, the stray cats audience were prodominantly punks. They got it. 1981, west coast punk was both underway and at it`s prime. grunge killed punk as we knew it. Not a callender date.

    Spot on. Unless you know the history of Mods and rockers, then this song will mean nothing to you. In the 60's the mods and rockers where fighting at the coast, and most famouse was at Brighton and Margate on bank holidays..Then in the late 70's the Teds and Punks went to war with each other. When Punk died in 1980 the Teds who had changed into Rockabilly Rebs and Rockers went to war with the resurgent mods, and that is what this song is all about.

  • @moominpic
    @moominpic 15 лет назад +1

    True to a point, but the lyrics talk about skinheads. I guess Setzer didn't know enough of the differences or he was specifically singing about the late '70's and early 80's (scooter boys etc). That said, I don't think you need to know about that for it to mean something to you, gang fights have always been part of the teen scene and '50's style R'n'R. Think of films like The Wanderers, where the greasers are fighting the baldies. A great tune whether you know that or not.

  • @moominpic
    @moominpic 15 лет назад

    There weren't skinheads either, if you are talking about the MOd/Rocker clashes of the early 1960's. The lyrics talk of "Rockabilly Cats" and "Skinheads". There were still the odd clashes on bank holidays in the late 1970's early 1980's but, like I said in an earlier post, it might be that Setzer just got his images mixed slightly.

    It was never a Punk song, and in 1981 Punk was all but dead, and the Clash were considered a New Wave band rather then Punk.
    In 1981 Briton, the main street cultures where Rockabilly and Two Tone led from coventry by the the Two tone label. It was because of the two scenes happening together that the song came into being.
    This song was at the start of Neo Rockabilly , which is what it is "Neo Rockabilly"

    Well it's their only punk song (both in lyrics and sound), punk was big at the time with The Clash and Chelsea and such, and they don't ever play it live so it seems like Setzer sort of disowns it.
