I've experienced/witnessed an induced labor in a hospital (terrible experience), a natural water birth at a birthing center (peaceful and amazing experience), and in a few weeks will be experiencing a natural home birth with our midwife. These experiences are necessary. If they won't take care of us properly we have to build our own system of care.

Just a side note from what I can remember from nursing school...the +2 that Shan talked about is known as the “station” of the baby. That number is dependent on the position of the baby in the cervix*. The stations go from -5 (floating in the uterus) to +5 (crowning) so all the nurse was saying is that Shan (at +2) was fairly close to the baby crowning.
*Correction: the number is dependent on the position of the baby in the PELVIS not the cervix.

It’s crazy the things us mamas go through! I was 15 days overdue (finally took Castor oil) ... laboured naturally in birth centre for 24 hours (contractions were 1 min apart from the first contraction😫), pushed for 8 hours .... my son was stuck in the canal. Had to take an ambulance to hospital, emergency c section. My son ended up in the NICU for a few days but ended up being healthy and now he’s 2 and thriving. If I had my time back and knew what I knew now, I would never do Castor oil again but I also would never allow my body to go 14/15 days overdue, thankfully my son was okay but it got really scary at one point. 10+2 means you are 10 cm dilated and +2 effacement means the baby is low in the birth canal, ready to be pushed out at any minute. Effacement ranges from -2 to +2, so -2, -1, 0, +1, +2. -2 means the baby is high, not in the canal yet, 0 means the baby is entering the canal, and +2 means the baby is coming out ASAP.

I love how you explained this! I just finished my obgyn rotation.. and it’s such a reflective experience to listen to this video and actually understand the terms you’re using. The +2 refers to where the baby’s head is.. so negative numbers mean that it’s hasn’t descended as much vs + numbers which indicate it has descended past the ischial spine of your pelvic bone. So at +2 your baby’s head was two cm below your ischial spine.

Then there is others who believe they “easy way out” instead of suffering like older generations. Lastly, natural birth has become “popular” recently because of peoples distrust in drugs & doing it the way God intended. I’m not saying her parents have that reason but thats usually the top 3.

Wow your birth story had some similarities to mine for sure. I was induced, had the folley bulb, got an infection, high fever then the body rash post delivery. But after 3 days of labor my son turned sunny side up and got stuck in my pelvis so I ended in c-section because my fever got so high and my bp got out of control. I had NO idea that the folley bulb had all of those side effects. I was just told it would help my cervix dilate. Im so glad you made a video like this so more people are informed about topics that aren't as widely known. I never watch birth stories but im glad that I watched yours. Congratulations to you and your family!!

When I had my first baby last year the only thing I needed was an epidural. I was pretty well into labor so it was mostly waiting some hours for the pushing process. I feel a bit upset they gave you so many options for medication that could have harmed you or the baby, and made you WAIT for other people giving birth! Lol When I was ready I simply waived at a nurse and a team came in my room ready to go! Glad you and the baby made it out the hospital healthy. Enjoy this new motherboard journey!

I’m so happy that you had a safe and healthy delivery. I can’t wait to be a mom someday in the next 10 to 15 years lol

I was told that I had to wait too! My midwife was attending another mom at the same time and they told me I had to wait until her child was born. I was given pitocin to speed up labor, and then my son starting coming out too quickly and they gave me more drugs to slow it down. So when my doctors told me to wait my turn, they told me not to push. We basically did the same thing Jared did and I said I don't know how to stop, I need someone in here! My midwife did not seem happy with me but my labor was progressing more quickly so I did end up getting attended to first. You two are such good parents and great job to Jared for speaking up for you!

I think its so important, that you know your body. and it needs strength to actually know your body THAT well, that you can just control it in that kinda situation! 💕
