  • Would you like to be better at concentrating and focusing? Here are three ways.
Number 1: Warm Up. Don’t expect yourself to concentrate and focus on demand. Effectively transitioning from idle to engaged requires mental preparation, like athletes warming up before an game. This "warm-up" might involve things like planning, reviewing key materials, or engaging in lighter, related tasks. By gradually engaging your mind, you can bring your ability to concentrate and focus online.
Number 2: Exercise restraint. Most of us are overwhelmed and distracted by how much there is to do. Free up your mental resources by setting limits on how much you’re doing in a given timeframe. More is not more! When less is competing for your attention and effort, you are freer to connect deeply with your work.
Number 3: Discern Emergency from Emergent Tasks: Not all tasks are urgent. When something pops into your mind, ask yourself: "Is this a true emergency requiring immediate attention, or an emerging task that can be done later?" Don't mistake the fear of forgetting for urgency. Capture emerging tasks in a "parking lot" list for later planning and completion so you can concentrate and focus on the task at hand.
