Margot Kidder and Reeves had the best on-screen had the best on-screen chemistry. Especially, that final scene is brilliantly acted.
This time we get to see Kidder playing two different characters.

It was always seen as the best Superman movie by most and the best Superhero movie for a long time, only Batman 1989 and 1992 came close at the time.

So glad you defended the scenes most people stage off. And well too. Some scenes are best left to the imagination, and the mystery of Superman's amazing powers and heritage. As Susan nah York said - the Mother talks to him about love -perfect. I never even knew who Marlon Brando was when I fist saw this as a kid.

Just watched the Donner cut again a few nights ago. The original version is so much better, I don't get why people say Donner's is better? The only wart is the silly comedy injected by Lester. Other than that, this is my preferred version of Superman II. "General. Would you care to step outside?" BRILLIANT! (And not in the Donner cut!)

Superman II the theatrical cut seemed to have taken place at least a year or two had passed since the first one, which I think was a better idea than the original concept of taking place directly after. When the villains arrive , Superman is already regarded by people as Earth’s defender, Lois is now accustomed into getting herself in trouble and saved by Superman, and is also aware the Clark is never around with Superman.

I actually thought Susannah York's appearance was an inspired choice, and it was a good thing Brando was dropped. For example, when Lara says that Kal-El can be hurt if he becomes human it resonates much more when said by a mother.
I'm also of the opinion that Brando is an overrated actor. His appearance in the Donner cut is ponderous and leaden and, to be honest, so is that version.
I agree with you that Superman II is a lot of fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously and it was a good sequel.

Tom Mankiewicz also wrote Live and Let Die, in addition to Superman I (and most of II), so I suspect he’s responsible for this same actor playing a sheriff in II. And since Mankiewicz walked after Donner was fired, I suspect those scenes with the East Houston sheriff were filmed by Donner.

The Donner cut is obviously incomplete, and Donner in the introduction himself says " you might want to make your own version on Superman 2". The prophecy I think related to all Kryptonians, not just Kal-el, and has nothing to do with him being a super hero. Lester version is complete, and was fine from the time it was released.

Man of steel is ten times better than any other Superman movie period.i been collecting comics since 1984 and man of steel was the Superman movie I had always wanted to see,Zack was gonna give Superman a arc,by the time his story was done he was gonna be more like the Chris reeve Superman.it’s much more interesting to see how he hit that way instead of just making it look like he was always a smiling boy scout from day one,& why does everyone get mad that he killed zod in mos yet they don’t seem to care that Chris reeve killed them all too, that wasn’t just a pot hole he kicked them into,he even killed them in the comics in 1986 using krypotine bc he had no choice.just like in mos,he didn’t want to kill zod but he left him no choice

My only real criticism of Superman 2 takes place in the Paris scene. It took entirely too long for Superman to get their understand they were trying to raise the stakes but the guy had just flown so fast during first time and then put it back on track in the last movie so obviously he should have been in Paris in the blink of an eye like two seconds after he started going there.

    • @michaelinlofi

I mean to be fair this could apply to the first movie too. Superman can fly around the world so fast he time travels but he can't catch both missiles?

I just rewatched this movie in 4k. I think its a masterpiece. Sure it isnt perfect. Its goofy in places and the effects are dodgy in places. Thats just a nitpick it doesnt bother me really. It has a lot of heart. It made me feel so emotional no other superhero film has ever made me feel like that and ive seen it many many times. I care for Clark & Lois. Reeve And Kidders chemistry is off the chart. I love that most of first hour its mainly just exploring Clark and Lois's relationship. Its a lot of fun to watch. Love it.

Excellent analysis of the film. It holds up even though some Lester's footage looks cheaper, the cinematography isn't as good, and Donner got a better performance out of Margot Kidder than Lester did. I love the Clark and Lois stuff that Lester shot at the Daily Planet and Niagra Falls, especially the ending, and the editor did a great job integrating the Donner footage with Lester's.

I don't totally blame Whedon from for Justice League, as the theatircal version is not his cut either. His edit was reportedly over 2 hours, but Warner Bros. cut it down to an hour, forty-five.
I guess my point is that the studio/producers should be the first suspects in circumstances like these, not the filmmakers.

I've not forayed into any fan edits myself, but the plan for a future video is to break down the process of what I would consider the "perfect" Superman II.
Also I also don't reckon Whedon is _entirely_ at fault for the theatrical cut of JL being terrible, but it is immensely obvious that his particular style of wit clashes violently with the established movie. I doubt those extra 15 minutes would have helped much

Just watched the theatrical cut again tonight, aka the REAL cut, and the original is definitely better. The romance between Clark and Lois is best developed here, the pacing is more action packed and better than it’s predecessor, the music, while not as majestic, is also an improvement in my opinion. I agree with you that the humor is actually not that bad or at least different from Donner’s stupid gags (ahem car accident massage ahem!), and the story is mostly well put together given the situation. My only gripe is Marlon Brando’s absence (despite the extortionate amount of money he was asking for) and the scenes missing towards the end (like the scene that explains that the fortress is armed and the one where Luthor, Zod and his gang) that makes the ending kinda hasty. And I would prefer the scene at the end with Lois to be cut so she still knows, but pretends that she doesn’t since Leueen came in (which is how I see it). But overall, this movie is my favorite of the four Reeve did. Can’t wait for your review on the Pryor cashgrab that’s Superman 3!

The best, five minutes of this film are at the beginning when they are recapping the first movie. Richard Lester did not take this story. @kingofthegundam7974 Год назад

I have to confess... I don't like either version of this movie? Aside from the incomplete nature of both cuts (that you drew attention to), I think the idea of Superman giving up his powers to be with Lois at the expense of humanity is a tough beat to pull off. Lester's cut barely manages this by giving Clark and Lois more time together and showing how in love they are, but it's undermined a lot by his memory eraser kiss that undoes that development. I always hated that, I can appreciate some goofy stuff in this cut but that was dumb in a way the time travelling wasn't. The scene where Lois is dropped off at the balcony feels like such a perfect send off for that romance, I wish they kept any mind erasing shenanigans for a sequel or something.
I get why you hate Jor-El and the Donner Cut as a whole, but I'd argue that his absence from the story leaves a huge hole in it, not the least of which is that after stressing all that time about how Superman has a duty he wouldn't have any opinions about his choice to be with Lois. I can take Lex being a bit more bufoonish in Donner's version, since at least Zod and crew come across more consistently threatening in it, especially during the end climax. I guess what I'd be looking for in an ideal cut would be having the Lester Cut romance arc with more or less the narrative structure of the Donner Cut.

    • @michaelinlofi
      @michaelinlofi  Год назад +1

That's all completely understandable. For me the memory eraser works marginally better because the time travel erases every single event in the movie, which makes it all feel kinda pointless to me. But I totally understand how the memory kiss can seem utterly stupid.
And ultimately I would structure an ideal cut more towards the Lester cut myself, but lift all the scenes from the Donner Cut that work better and paste them in - Jor-El in the trial, the more serious super breath moment, the less stupid Fortress showdown (even though I said I like how it goes in this cut, I can still admit it's stupid), stuff like that
