To be honest, I kind of like that the 4th doctor volunteered to translate, said he was fluent in all dialects and proceeded to say a string of gibberish. It makes the exchange hillarious. I dont think it was intentional at all. It was likely just them being lazy and pretty racist, but the confusion on the guys face as the doctor attempts to communicate is priceless.

What they don't get about the UK original is that lister and Rimmer hate each other but are in fact best mates.

Us Americans need to keep out of UK productions, we ruin it all. This and Doctor Who is the same touched by Americans and it's crap.

Isn’t it weird that CRAIG Bierko took CRAIG Charles’ role and CHRIS Eigeman took CHRIS Barrie’s role? Even weirder, ROBERT LLEWELLYN took the role of ROBERT LLEWELLYN! crazy! And although Jane Leeve took Norman Lovett’s role, Hinton Battle’s (who seems to have 2 surnames, yet Danny John Jules had 3 Forenames) name is a little like Hattie Hayridge. Well, they both start with an ‘H’. Perhaps the same H they took off Rimmer? Or, perhaps it’s just the Yanks showing that they don’t ‘get’ British humour. Sid them down to watch a show and many will love it but let them sit down and recreate it, they will show over and over again they just don’t get why it works. It’s strange how similar Americans and Brits often are and how we often like the same things but either we just don’t understand why the other makes something successful or there’s just that ‘something’ missing from our 2 peoples. Americans fail time and time again when it comes to our humour and yet we just can’t get American confidence, bravado and self-honour. We could never, unironically, make a Band Of Brothers yet we. Can easily fill the roles in it.

The original was trash as well, so I think it's a pretty decent homage. 🤣

America tried to remake Red Dwarf, Absolutely Fabulous, Taskmaster, even the Eurovision Song Contest... and every time, they ruin a show. Mostly because Americans take themselves far too seriously and make everything so... American. On the other side, there's been some genius American shows, e.g. The Golden Girls, which the UK tried to remake (Brighton Belles) and it failed. Maybe the lesson here is that something is successful because of the specific elements that make the magic and that magic can never be remade.

When will greedy corporations desperate to remake things ever realise that 99.99% of the time we DIDN'T like the originals because of the premise. We loved them because the actors were perfect, their delivery of amazing lines came across almost as improvisation. It's the case in Dad's Army, Mrs Slocum and Mr Humphries in Are You Being Served, Ronnie Barker, David Jason, Harry H Corbett, John Cleese.

Is anything american that good? They kinda ruin most things.

I love me some Red Dwarf. I tried watching the American version and it was so painfully bad, nothing close to the majestic British show.

Americans just aren't funny like they used to be in the 70's they ruin everything they try to copy especially The Office and Red Dwarf and many others, it's all cringe and woke trash.

There's a lot of ways that this adaptation missed the point of the source material, but the one that sticks out for me is that they took Dave Lister, a regular-looking, mixed-race explicitly slobby lumpen slacker with an extremely specific regional accent and replaced him with a guy who looks like the prom king somehow had a baby with a cable news talking head who talks like he's reading the news. A real Americanized Lister would be (for example) a slightly funny-looking dude of ambiguous ethnicity with a thick Baltimore accent, not a 6'4" guy with washboard abs who looks like he knows a lot about sailing.

Wow! If you think ¼ black Lister being made white is whitewashing, wait till you see every Disney film from the past 5 years and British TV has done to Tudor kings and Queens and Dr Who! Apparently Ann Boleyn was from South Sudan. Oh, btw, did you know that a Queen of Egypt of Greek decent was from Ghana.

I remember watching Red Dwarf and i am not 100% sure but i thing it was on P.BS.. i also remember and still ti today believe that dave, rimmer and cat are the best trio caracther i have seen, and i have seen sssssoooooooooo much t.v. and movies from Canada, united-states, england, france and portugal. And do i did enjoy others shows and kovies to me no caractrr when soooo well together then in this show, when they added the android i was a bit dissapointed, i do like him sometime but i did not feel they needed to add more besidadding a lot more show with those 3 but what is done is done.

US lister should have been an average joe from Detroit. not white washed.

Only good thing about it was Robert Llewelyn was in it, other than that it was dreadful.

With all of the Pertwee era/Barry Letts praise I was surprised to see no mention of Planet of the Spiders and the yellow face used there for characters like Cho-je. Letts had contacts for Asian actors like you said here and still resorted to yellow face just a few years after Mind of Evil.

I couldn't bear to watch anymore halfway through. We all know there is no good surviving footage from either pilot (worse than VHS quality) so it's pretty darn hard to tell whether it sucked or not. The first episode of the original is not exactly its best either, after all. The show didn't truly come into its own until season 2 so the whole "The American version sucks" trope is just someone running their mouth. I was hoping to see better quality footage, but the video shows more of the British version than the US pilot so it's a bit of an attempt to make money off a bunch of jibber jab.
