In this video Dr Mike explains how the common anti-inflammatory steroids like cortisone, hydrocortisone (cortisol), prednisone, prednisolone, and dexamethasone work!

Hi Dr Mike and Dr Matt! Just wanted to say thanks so much for uploading all these videos. It really helps me consolidate knowledge and makes it easier to comprehend concepts. I scored really well for my CNS quiz 2 days ago thanks to all your help! :)
Thank you for your lecture! I have been on different steroids including dexamethasone and so worried about the sodium retention and its hard to come across easily understandable information for the average person, but this really helped!
Fantastic, thanks for the share. My doc prescribed Prednisone and mentioned the function it performs with the Adrenal Gland. Fascinating to understand more of what goes on. This time, I have a different formulation and routine with the P than I usually have. Caused severe insomnia. Other form I take never had that effect.
Thanks Doc!!!! I’m new to prednisone due to an adult onset of Asthma and I’m very weary of all the prednisone they are prescribing me with until I get to my pulmonologist appt!!! So this is good to know bc personally, I’m not with the water retention side effect. I just don’t want that...good to know it’s just “medium” for water retention. They just prescribed me 40mg a day for 5 days because I was previously tapering off of prednisone but as soon as tapering ends I experience respiratory issues again....This is so weird but my mom also developed asthma in her 40’s.....any thoughts?
Hi, my mother due to issues with sleep went from 2mg to 1mg Prednisone for a long time and then stopped completely recently but has been experiencing a complete loss of appetite. She also suffers from hypothyroidism and I noticed that her TSH levels have dropped around 30% as currently 1.78 but her usual levels are usually in the 1.20s yet has remained on the same dose of 75mg levothyroxine. I just wish to know if this is common?
I had a steroid shot and a prescription of antibiotic and Prednisone plus some ointment for the bacterial inflamation in my eyelid. I am scared to take in this Prednisone tablets, should I or should I not? Also I am on a ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. The doctor said I should eat 3x a day before I take this Prednisone. I'm confused with these side effects that I am learning from youtube. Please I need help.
I used betamethasone dipropante 0.5perc from the age of 7 till present age of 24 for my eczema. Im overweight by 50pounds. I got all my tests and only thing wrong with me systemically is I have low testosterone of 250. Does the topical corticosteroid cream longterm use affect testosterone levels????
Could you tell me why prednisone effects my trt therapy. I've been off prednisone for 3 months and stopped trt for this reason. Before prednisone it worked incredible. I'm hoping the more prednisone leaves my body trt will work again. Any ideas
What confuses me is when they say the effects last for (x) amount of time do they mean the say for example depo-medrol stays in the system or the effects from the medication lasts for (x) amount of time.
I finally lost weight after battling some type of autoimmune inflammation for years by default when a cosmetic surgeon prescribed me a glucocorticoid to heal cosmetic related wounds. That’s when I found out that my body was actually dealing with inflammation that was not allowing me to drop weight. Crazy!
Iether more than half the people are ignoring some thing. steroids are very dangerous for many suffering lives today but thats to bad lets stick for the none effected .
Does taking Prednisone for a lot of months maybe even a year (in low dosages 5mg or less) cause loss of muscle? I work out and I worry it might be stalling my progress. Two years ago I took 60 mg and kept reducing until about 8 months later when I stopped. Was it bad for my muscle growth potential then? I worry because I do weightlifting and have lupus and sometimes I have flares where I have to take steroids for some time. I'm only taking 2,5mg now and started last october of 2019 with around 10mg. I hope I stop taking it by November of this year 2020.
Taking prednisone for more than 2 weeks is when the side effects kick in usually. Just got some today for allergies and only have it for 5 days so I’m in the ok zone
How have you been? I am taking a 40mg dexamethasone and it's been 2 months now since I am still waiting for my chemotheraphy ( I was diagnosed with Lymphoma ). I have a moon face now a puffy face because of the steroids and I am trying to combat it by running but it's really puffy T^T the doctor said it's normal side effect. What should I do? should I ask to stop it?
I've been on 5 mg prednisone for 5 days and I've been fasting for 3 days... I feel great. I will fast 3/4 days a week to fight inflammation and eat once a day the rest of the week a 0 carb . I told my doctor and she did not think it would be a problem. You should be fine!
@@dunndee9570 If you're fighting an autoimmune disorder there are many videos with youtube explaining how 0 carb diet and fasting gets rid of inflammation and autoimmune disorders go away. It's ruined my life and destroyed my arm I am a shell of myself.. never get this! Went to hospital for heart pains and they said they would give me a antinflammatory shot, I said no unless it's gonna save my life. Was told after it wasn't needed and I was treated horribly and had eyes rolled at me for being upset about getting something without being told what it was! Since then u have Charlie horses all over my arm and tingling and numbness and intense pain and vibrating and weakness and stinging ..months later every day
no, they are immunosuppresants which means they weaken your immune system. The inflammation they reduce isn't in organs but in joints and bones. It's actually riskier when you're taking these types of steroids because your immune system becomes compromised. I do not recommend taking them specially if you're healthy and don't have any underlying illnesses.

Yes it can, it will inhibit an overreative immune response to the virus which can also cause inflammation...
