Lo Fi usually doesn't sample. It just takes a whole chunk, doesn't chop it, doesn't reinvent it, just straight up steals it. Sampling is an artform but Lo-Fi disrespects that imo. I can't count the amount of time I've seen whole playlists or whole channels that folks are just subscribed to purely to sample from rather than searching for samples on their own.
Real Hip Hop on the other hand flips samples properly. Like I heard a sound effect from Thomas The Tank that sounded strange, I chopped it, pitched it down, added bass, drums, bells, etc, rapped over it and next thing you know I had a political Grime-influenced song about the terrorism and violence that was going on in my city (London) a couple of months back

Kaizer-Man Sampling is an art. However most of the songs you love have probably been sampled without really being chopped as well. Or maybe they just take 4 bars worth of a sample and steal another 8 bars later on in the song. Lo-fi from what I've listened to usually takes a small cut from a sample and plays it over and over. Maybe that's why you think the entire song is bitten. Either way, I find it to be interesting, and it's not like people profit from these tracks since samples are never cleared.

Funny! A lot of truth in your sarcasm. But that's why the genre is so popular with people who use it for studying or relaxing. It doesn't really engage the listener. It's great for doing something else like studying, writing, reading, even sleeping. It blocks out the real distracting sounds but because it's so generic it isn't distracting in itself - like white noise. If it was more imaginative and less formula, it would divert your attention. I play it and chillhop and jazzhop and whateverhop while I work. It's like...a productivity tool. If I play anything more complex and it's well done, I wind up focusing on the music and not what I'm supposed to be doing!

Been playing "conventional" music for years but I started making lofi music cause it felt relaxing to listen to and it just put me in a good mood to make it. The thing is though I've never taken melodies from other people and I always made them myself. I really don't get how people make music like that cause for me at least it takes the fun out of it and just makes it tedious.

In the hip-hop world there's this thing called sampling. It's not "stealing". It's just a way to make one sound into another. Genres like lofi hip-hop, jazz hip-hop, chillhop, etc. all sample old school/ jazzy music. They put it with a new school sounding beat and that's the basic fundamental of music genres like these. I hate when people talk about something they don't know.

I never called his music lofi. Just said him and nujabes were the fathers of it because they were the fathers of hip hop. Lo-fi is a subgenre of hiphop that branched out from musical influences set by J dilla and Nujabes. Because of their influence on the hip hop community, we were introduced to many different sub genres of hip hop including lo-fi. Thus it is not technically wrong to call them the fathers of good lofi music (even though they didn't make lo-fi music, they pioneered the way for others to make it). Although I guess technically speaking it would make them the Grandfathers of lo-fi since lo-fi is a sub genre lol.
