How to Create & Keep Swirls in Epoxy Resin after its set? - I Try The FREEZER METHOD! ❄

  • So I have been asked a few times on how to keep the effects using 2 or 3 different colors like swirls in resin once its set! Its a difficult one and it doesn't always work well. You see the masters do it like Heath Knuckles etc but when we all try this it never looks the same does it ? Well today we are going to try a few experiments to see if we can create these cool looking effects in resin once set. I even try a FREEZER METHOD.

    If you watch Julie at ‘Pouring your heart out’ she mastered the art of leaving the resin to cure just long enough to do what she wants with all kind of colours... she is awesome.

    Hypothesis: freezing is unlikely to work because the cold inhibits curing. Once it comes back to room temperature, the resin effectively returns to its "just poured" state and cures the same as it normally would. However waiting for an hour lets it partially cure and makes it more viscous so it's just less mobile and less likely to mix further as it cures in the pressure pot.

    • @benduffy4223
      @benduffy4223 3 года назад +5

      This correct. Freezer slows the chemical reaction that causes the resin to cure. This is actually done in the real world in automotive refinishing, to extend the pot life of 2K paint

    • @hoshiadam
      @hoshiadam 3 года назад +1

      If working time is an issue, you could do both. Let it react for 45 minutes, put in the freezer for a while to slow the reaction down, then pull out, add colors and pour. If working with a large amount of resin, this might extend the window where it will pour but not mix.

    • @lindacondray7918
      @lindacondray7918 3 года назад +5

      Yep, I was expecting him to put in oven or heat, not freeze it. Warm the resin so it cures faster not letting the colors intermingle for as long.

    • @Dosbomber
      @Dosbomber 3 года назад +4

      Plus if it's in the freezer and still trying to cure (getting warm), it could draw in moisture from the freezer, adding water to the resin, causing even more problems, including cloudiness.

    • @da1chem
      @da1chem 3 года назад +1

      Exactly. Gentle heating and/or high shear mixing can serve to accelerate the reaction. Sometimes the addition of a small quantity of a “metallic powder” can also accelerate. Accelerating too fast can also cause the resin to be brittle. There are also thixotropic additives that can serve to increase the viscosity. If translucence is not a priority; then a pinch of cabosil fumed silica would be a great additive. Your example at the end shows that patiently waiting for the desired thickening just may be best!🤓🤩😎

  • @drstrangefart
    @drstrangefart 3 года назад +13

    OH! ALSO! If you let one color thicken up quite a bit then make the other color fresh so it's still thin when you pour, you can get some VERY interesting patterns. I did that with colored resin into clear in vertical pen blank molds and the results were spectacular. I poured the thicker resin into the thin from as far up as I felt I could aim and didn't touch it once the pour was done.

    A lot of comments, haven't gone through them all. 3 things:
    1) Use a temp gauge so you know when the exothermic reaction is just thickening the resin.
    2) Mix 1 color and let it set (temp gauge or viscosity check) then mix/pour 2nd color.
    3) Talk to Entropy and ask if using more hardener in one batch will work, might not cure correctly though.
    I use a Polyester resin that you add catalyst to. 5 drops/oz. If I over-catalyze, 2X, the 2nd color it thickens faster so the colors stay reasonably separate. A temp gauge is a good thing to have in the shop.
    Love your videos.

    I work small scale and don’t have a vacuum pot, so I warm my resins by putting the bottles in warm water to help prevent bubbles when I pour. Heating it quickens the curing process, so it gets thick quickly, and pouring it when it’s a little thicker helps.
    One thing I like to do is pour a dark layer and let it sit for a little bit then drizzle other colors over it. Then pour some clear while the drizzled colors are still wet and the base is sticky. You’ll end up with a neat 3D looking set of layers and the clear layer will look like a “peep hole” in the middle of the other colors.
    My husband and I love watching your channel, by the way!

    Hey Nick I use amazing clear cast and use an IR thermometer to check the temperature in the pot until it's around 40/50 degrees that way you get good colour separation I'm not surprised by the freezer result as effectively putting it in the freezer will cool down the exothermic reaction and essentially slow down the curing process
